They will fix it, and you folks will still vandalize it for scrap.
Can't Government create room for security on the bridge?... something like cameras?
Hungry and angry Nigerians will do anything to survive after all the people in government are equally vandalizing our resources

Trying to please a people who have chosen not to be pleased is a waste of time. The best thing when dealing with them is to do what is right and move on.

So we have excess money so much that we can build a facility, and then secure it from those for whom it was built.
The problem is our mind.

This is to further show that civil servants don't do their jobs or there are not funds available for them to do it. Because critical infrastructure like this is expected to be physically inspected at least twice or thrice yearly.

Rubyjade:
Honestly, this is the part that should make us angry. How does a major piece of national infrastructure get vandalised badly enough for bolts, expansion joints and other critical components to be removed, and the authorities only become aware after someone posts it on social media?

We are in 2026. This shouldn't be a case of “somebody saw it, took pictures, posted online, then government officials woke up.” There should be a proper 24/7 monitoring and early-warning system for critical infrastructure.

And the irony is that the government already knows technology can help. A CCTV Monitoring and Viewing Centre was commissioned for the Second Niger Bridge, with real-time surveillance and a rapid-response model specifically intended to prevent vandalism.

So why wasn't the same seriousness applied to the First Niger Bridge, especially considering its age, strategic importance and vulnerability?

CCBT/CCTV surveillance, sensors, regular automated inspections and a rapid-response system should be the bare minimum for infrastructure like this. You shouldn't have to wait for a Facebook post, Nairaland thread or a concerned citizen to discover that somebody is dismantling a national asset.

And this is bigger than the Niger Bridge.

What is happening with the Benin Bypass? Who is monitoring these projects after the cameras leave and the commissioning ceremonies end? Who is responsible for detecting deterioration, vandalism and other problems before they become emergencies?

We are too comfortable with reactive governance:

Something gets damaged → Nigerians complain → social media goes crazy → minister visits → government orders repairs.

Why can't we have:

Monitor → detect → alert → respond → prevent?

The minister inspecting the bridge is good. Ordering repairs and CCTV installation is good. But let's be honest: the real embarrassment is that citizens had to sound the alarm before the system did.

A country that spends billions building infrastructure should spend a fraction of that money protecting and intelligently monitoring what it has already built.

Otherwise, we will keep commissioning infrastructure with cameras on inauguration day and discovering problems through Facebook six months later. 😭

I will commend the effort of the man who made this video and let it get to the appropriate authority. This is the kind of awareness we should be calling this people to. And I don't know if I know anything but I haven't seen any Minister as fast as David Umahi
Thank you.... You're thoughtful...

You said in the past ten years. Other governments have not responded in the past ten years. One government now decided to respond and you are talking about presidential election. Are you grateful at all? Given the level of hatred of Igbos against this government do you think that this government will use projects to win votes from them. Even if this government builds heaven for them they will still hate and grudge. It's their style.
Re: Umahi Storms River Niger Bridge (Photos, Video) by Vision101(m): 12:34am On Aug 29
Rubyjade:
I agree that the man who made the video deserves commendation, especially because public awareness can force the right authorities to pay attention. And yes, David Umahi appears to be one of the more visible ministers when it comes to physically responding to infrastructure issues.

But I think we should be careful about measuring government performance mainly by how quickly a minister arrives at the scene after a problem has gone viral.

Around the world, the strongest infrastructure systems are designed so that authorities don't have to wait for someone to make a viral video before they know something is wrong.

In countries like Japan, Singapore and the Netherlands, infrastructure management relies heavily on routine inspections, sensors, maintenance schedules, monitoring systems and clear accountability. A bridge shouldn't need a Facebook post before government discovers that something is being vandalised or deteriorating.

Even in places like the United States and the UK, infrastructure agencies have structured inspection and reporting systems. Citizens can still report problems, but citizen videos are supposed to complement government monitoring—not become the government's monitoring system.

So I will commend Umahi for responding quickly. That's good leadership.

But the bigger question should be: Why did the problem get to the point where a citizen had to record it and put it online before it received attention?

We should demand both:

1. Fast response when problems are reported.
2. A proactive system that detects problems before citizens have to report them.

Because a government that is always excellent at responding to viral problems may still have a serious weakness in prevention.

The goal shouldn't be to have the fastest minister at every disaster scene.

The goal should be to build infrastructure systems where fewer disasters require the minister's personal intervention in the first place.
In this nations that you mentioned can you see a citizen removing such things? This is the problem of copy and paste. Our situation is peculiar.

So it is under this govt your people started speaking the bars ba
You dey mind am?nothing you can ever do to please these people one was even supporting vandals and iron condemned people that's because of subsidy removal and hardship is why they are doing it as if there wasn't infrastructural vandalization even before tinubu's time not even a fan of tinubu or any politician self but you can keep hiding and praise your weaklings while demonizing others who are even doing more and far better that place had governors, senators and representatives for the past 10 years they have been receiving allowances and fat salaries yet couldn't do anything about it yet a swift response was made in tinubu era and still they are blaming him!

And I hope the other person defending vandals won't call out the government if that place is vandalized again? like it is only in that area their is hardship in Nigeria moreso no be only that place needs infrastructures too they always support crookery and criminality that's why no one takes them serious.
