Smh.

See how GenZ Tekno is fraudulently attempting to spin history. He should kuku include Dan Maraya of Jos too.

Oliver De Coque sings highlife like those ahead of him like Rex Lawson, Bobby Benson, Victor Uwaifo etc.

Only a fraud will come up today to claim Oliver De Coque sings afrobeat. He doesn't! Throughout his lifetime, Sir Oliver De Coque sings Ogene highlife and never at anytime deviated from his highlife music.

Afrobeat is not highlife! Fela created Afrobeat and his beats and lyrics were largely drawn from Yoruba language he spins into pidgin.
The question is what’s exactly is “Afrobeats”? Tekno or whatever is his name is saying that Oliver de Coque was the one that inspired him the most and all African music is Afrobeats.

That's just the truth not only igbo highlife musicians but also ghanaian highlife musicians contributed greatly in creating afrobeats i even learnt it was ghanaians that actually created it.

Yea, say some people that hate competition. You expect everyone to dobale for you and not have a contrary opinion or choice, no matter how foolish? Now it’s Igbos have a tendency to bring others down…and the Yorubas have the tendency for what?

Oliver De Coque. He was a very very good and popular highlife musician in the 1970s and 80s and even into the 1990s.

Not as big as Fela though , and he would have regarded himself as a highlife musician not a Afrobeats musician.

He's late now btw.

All African music and all music from Africa ARE not Afrobeat.

Here in Yorubaland, we have fuji, apala, juju, etc. that are indigenous to Yorubaland like Fela's afrobeat. They are not afrobeat.

In Yorubaland, there are even families, religion, cults, occupations that own some music genre here in Yorubaland. The Yoruba are in a class of their own so we don't lump up our authentic creation with that of others.

This is why we refer to you guys as outsiders. You want to appropriate what is not yours and impose your ignorance on it. There are still genres of music in Yoruba that I have even forgotten to include like Rara, Ajala etc. Those genre of music are different from afrobeat and have cultural meaning, religious application.

No Yoruba person will confuse Fela's Afrobeat with Juju or vice versa. They are different. We grew up listening to them from our parents collections and at socio-cultural/religious events and we appreciate their unique differences!

“Fela is not the originator of Afrobeats. Lagos people and the Yorubas might say he is the one, but I am from the East, and we had legends like Oliver De Coque. Oliver De Coque made pure highlife music. Highlife is also Afrobeats.

Tekno is so wrong..

Highlife is different from Afro beat. Fela originates Afro beat while Highlife originates from Ghana. And this, exactly is one of the major reasons they’re very different genres of music. Highlife is a Ghana traditional kind of music, like a song they do sing for culture. It’s 100% different from Afro beats..

Of which, the highlife itself, they’ve been singing it in Nigeria before Oliver de couqe was born..

Oliver was born in 1947 but highlife started in Nigeria by Bobby benson in 1940s. Oliver was just 8years old when Fela started singing… Una see say nah trash Tekno dey yarn?

Afro beats is different..
Highlife is different..

This guy has taken something.

Where is the resemblance between Igbo highlife and Afrobeats?

Does he know that Fela actually wrote sheet music for the instruments in his songs?

Afrobeat is more related to Black American Jazz and Blues than anything in Nigeria and Africa.

The real "originator" debate is instead between Fela and Orlando Julius, both of whom played beautiful, REAL Afrobeats at the same time., with only one small difference, Orlando started as a saxophonist while Fela started with the trumpet, then went on to play the sax.

Tecno abi na infinix should go and sleep off his high. He'll be alright in the morning.
Re: Fela Not Originator Of Afrobeats – Tekno by Sleekfingers: 8:21pm On Aug 28
Fela pioneer Afrobeat, not Afrobeats which more wide .. ( highlife and other music genre)
But Fela popularized it. With infusing of Jazz , funk , classical, Africa folks songs and other pan African genre across Africa.

How was Fela opportune ? He studied music in the United Kingdom.
He called his music Afrobeat . And worked his way up .
Oliver de whatever was local champion, who chose not to explore the opportunities by going internationally like Fela .....

Highlife came from Ghana. Fela played highlife before. He also played Jazz. He created Afrobeats from a fusion of jazz and blues, with the horns ensemble typical to highlife.

Highlife like the Igbos played it is zero percent like Afrobeats. Afrobeats is always on the minor scale while highlife is always on the major scale. Den no resemble at all!

What is afrobeat?

Afrobeat is a genre of music concerning purely African Music. Local instruments are involved, with little exterior equipment too.

What makes up afrobeat? Tempo, rhythm, vigour and meaning of lyrics.

Originators of Afrobeat are numerous, each with it's distinct style and cultural elements. Afrobeat doesn't belong to any geographic region.

History of Afrobeat? Way back as old as man. Documented history of Afrobeats were in the 18th century during the Black Renaissance period(Slavery, Abolishment and Settlement in the Americas).

Does each geographic region has their subgenres of Afrobeat?

Yes. Every region has it's own specific genre. History varies loosely.

Tekno is right.

Oliver De Coque, King of Highlife Music, he is a Nigerian music legend.

The great Fela Kuti started as a highlife musician also, before he transformed & created his own genre of music known as Afrobeat.

Afrobeat is combining West African rhythms with jazz and funk. Highlife is guitar-driven, melodic West African sound. They are different. Fela is the originator of afrobeat, Oliver sang highlife. The Europeans could connect more with Fela because his music reminded them of Jazz and funk while Oliver could only reach our local audience. Both great musicians with different styles.
They connect with him but a popular US musician that came to Lagos some years back said he has never heard of fela, not only me that don't like that music genre.

I think he's just saying what he believes to be true. Recording artistes like to feel they are musicians, but they are not.

He's ignorant, but he doesn't even know.
