Schools Can’t Force Parents To Buy Books, Uniforms From Them — LASG by adenigga(op): 1:42pm On Sep 06
The Lagos State Government has reminded parents and guardians of their consumer rights, saying schools should not unnecessarily compel them to buy approved books, uniforms and stationery directly from the school when equivalent items are reasonably available from other suppliers.

The government, through the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, LASCOPA, issued the statement, Sunday, as schools prepare to reopen, urging parents and guardians to know their rights and report cases of consumer protection concerns.

According to the agency, parents are often given lists of books, stationery and uniforms after completing the admission process for their children.

However, a situation may arise where the same approved and equivalent items are available at another shop at a lower price.

LASCOPA noted that parents and guardians should generally be free to decide where to purchase such items when equivalent approved products are reasonably available elsewhere.

The agency illustrated a situation where a parent decides to purchase the required books or uniforms from another supplier, only to be told by the school, “No. You must buy them from us. We don’t accept books or uniforms purchased elsewhere.”

The state government said such restrictions should not be unnecessarily imposed on parents and guardians.

“Where equivalent approved products are reasonably available elsewhere, parents and guardians should generally be free to choose where to purchase them.

“A school should not unnecessarily restrict parents from buying equivalent approved books, uniforms or stationery from other suppliers,” the agency added.

LASCOPA urged parents and guardians to understand their rights and speak up whenever they encounter a consumer protection concern.

The agency stressed that consumers have a choice and should be aware of their rights when making purchases connected with their children’s education.

“You have a choice. Know your rights. Speak up,” the agency stated.

Parents and guardians who have consumer protection complaints have been advised to report their grievances to LASCOPA.

Members of the public can also contact the agency through their emergency lines.

As schools prepare to resume, the Lagos State Government urged parents and guardians to remain aware of their consumer rights and report concerns to the appropriate authorities.

“In Lagos State, consumers are kings,” the government said.

Brilliant one!

Enforcement is now key!

Create hotlines and enforcement agency yo make that happen!

Nevertheless, Lagos state needs to invest massively into basic education.

The private schools will go underground once that is done.

Also, channel same energy toward touts, hooligans and NURTW in the state. Sanitize our roads, markets and parks. These touts are not greater than the government and Buba Marwa showed us it was possible.

How can citizens still be transacting with touts in 2026?

Someone should make a name for himself and eradicate the menace.

Delta please follow. Parents are forced to buy books, and uniforms in most private schools in Delta state. For the primary sections apart from verbal reasoning and quantitative you won't find the other books in the markets. Schools are now working with publishers to publish the school customized text and notebooks.

Some schools instead of increasing school fees outrightly, they have smartly pushed it into book selling.

My sister is complaining seriously about the cost of buying books for her children

Anything the government can do to reduce the financial burden on parents is welcome

Lols...

Makes me recall my secondary school days...

I take money for the books but would break lockers and claim and achieve the books of others...

I even mistakenly "achieved" my girlfriend's four figure table back then. She came to our house to complain about it. It was when 8 was using it for some assignments I noticed her surname and name on the side.... Lols

I bad small that year o😁

Yes. This is a people's policy!

Only problem is that uniform may no longer be uniform when done outside the school.

That's private schools for you. All these wouldn't have happened if government school was working
Re: Schools Can’t Force Parents To Buy Books, Uniforms From Them — LASG by LibertyRep: 12:07pm On Sep 07
Are the private schools aware of this? Will the government be able to enforce this?

Some of these schools won't even allow notebooks that are not from them.

Uniform could be excused.

FG govt should implement this too. Schools have made most parents poor and completely broke
Re: Schools Can’t Force Parents To Buy Books, Uniforms From Them — LASG by Mccullum: 12:10pm On Sep 07
They ought to make it a law that, a textbook should not be published with notebook, that will have assignment pages in it. Both textbook and notebook should be separated. This will tackle exploitative strategy of the publishers.

My issue is the persistent disregard of the provision in the child's rights act that prohibits flogging children by missionary schools in Nigeria particularly ECWA.
A lawsuit needs to be brought against such schools. No teacher has the right to flog anybody's child and any teacher that does that should be sentenced to prison and that school should be shut down.

Now, I can understand your mindset and how you think. You are like a lantern that fail to see its bottom. How can the same energy be channeled towards thugs, hooligans and NURTW in the state? You mean they should sanction the drug lord boys? You see why I say something is kind of wrong with your type and those of who support the drug lord.

Funny is, as a school, if you sell this things, you can get parent to buy from you by simply selling cheaper to them, after all you have an ready market. Schools can as well give the parents options of buying and paying later or spread the payments across the months of the school term.

Before you talk, make sure you know what you are saying. The textbooks you see in the market are pirated textbooks. So you expect a publisher to spend huge funds in publishing only for the books to become pirated in the markets for schools to buy cheaply? Why not hold your government accountable for not funding education properly so that the public schools can become competitive?
