Seriously, Lagos is smelling terribly right now. My neighborhood in Ayobo is completely filled with garbage. The PSP operators haven't come to collect our waste for months, even though we fully paid our bills. The entire stretch of Ishefun Road down to Megida is covered in heaps of trash dumped right on the road demarcation. It has never been this bad, and with the rainy season here, the situation is dangerous. Whenever you walk down the inner streets, you are forced to cover your nose because there is a mounting heap of waste in front of almost every single compound. To fix this mess permanently, we need workable solutions on the ground: Integrate local cart pushers: Register local operators with small carts to collect waste from the inner streets where big PSP trucks cannot or will not go.Enforce pay-on-evacuation: Stop paying PSP operators in advance; residents should only pay through the CDA after the trash has been successfully cleared. Set up CDA-monitored street hubs: Create gated community collection points inside the streets managed by local CDAs to stop people from walking out to dump on the Ishefun Road demarcation. Applicable to other areas. Deploy the local LCDA task force: Use local council officials to monitor the Ishefun-Megida road and other areas stretch and penalize night dumpers on the spot. |

Lagos state government has to do much much better on waste management. The govt is failing in this regard. They need to employ strict rules to waste disposal. I see the govt as been too lenient on waste disposal by the public. There should be very strict fines and imprisonment for violating the rules. Most societies are kept clean mostly because the people living in those environments obey obey rules when it comes to waste management. Visit any clean society, and you will notice that the people themselves are very clean and cares about their environment. That's not the case in Lagos most come to Lagos to make money and don't really care about anything else. |

I government should privatize this waste management sector or allow individuals or community based responsibility. Government should just issue licenses and regulated just as everyone in Lagos is providing water themselves but still pay water use charge. |

What about on "Open Defecation " ? Such should be the 1st one the List. Anyone caught should face 50 years in JaiL with Hard Labor and any retail business or public outlet refusing the general public from accessing their toilet should be closed entirely. Being FILTHY can't be culturaL. That's how it is done.! |

You can buy a billion compactor airplanes if you want, nothing will change cos the average Nigerian hates the country and can't be bothered about tossing a heap of trash on the road or anywhere. treesun: |

And i also declare state of emergency on sanwo. Our politicians have long abused the use of this phrase, show action instead of this often useless declaration. Another useless one you hear is "condemn in strong terms". |

1F30M4:They are focused on politics instead of good governance. The money is there, they just lack the will power. They don't see the masses as a priority. I am very sure you won't find waste in any of their immediate surroundings. |

| Re: Filth: Sanwo-olu Declares State Of Emergency On Waste Management by MoneyMan5: 3:40pm On Sep 10 |
The government have to tackles waste management seriously, Lagos need a lot of reform on waste management. They should increase the budget for it and employ more people or the government mustn't really handle everything let the sector be privatize with the government just issuing licenses to proper waste disposal company. Lagos is now on the global stage and how it looks is what foreigners will be judging the country with, even if the infrastructures is not that good if Lagos can become a very clean city people will still always judge it better. |
