Alex Otti Leading Abia Into Darkness(must read) by Nduka172(op): 2:55pm On Sep 12
It's no longer news that Aba residents have been experiencing severe shortage and outage in power supply for months now and Alex otti is doing little or nothing about it
the severe outage experienced in months have led to the destabilisation and shut down of so many medium & small scale business who couldn't cope
Abia residents have been dastardly affected by the lacklustre and mismanagent of Alex Otti and his administration
Mind you Abia state Governor Alex Otti receives a staggering 38billion naira monthly against the 5billion naira the past administration received, yet the power sector and other key infrastructural sectors are underdeveloped with several investors in doubt.
Alex Otti's administration has been mered with so many irregularities their lacklustre and inefficiency have affected businesses and livelihood across the state.
Aba powers recent abysmal failure in properly handling power distribution across aba region can't be neglected
Abia needs an innovative, transparent and industrious leader with the ability to tackle complex situations
while in umuahia residents are complaining about outrageous, unbearable and unjustified billing not regarding the shortage in power supply which they have been battling, most umuahia residents are on estimated bill.
Abians are fed up
They will have their say on the ballot soon and mind you it will count.

It's like you don't live in aba, residents are complaining and mind you it's not fictional
Abia is not better than any neighbouring state I wonder why you're saying performing governors to emulate Otti that is failing us

Otti only works on social media his industrialisation agenda is zero and he has successfully scared of prominent investors in the state and Abia state belongs to Abians not just obidients
News is flying that he is using state funds to fund labour party activities across the state which is wrong in ethics and fair governmental principles.
Our votes will count come 2027

The power supply issue is not the fault of the state government or geometric power.

The power supply issue is the fault of a decades long government policy of underpricing power, and subsidsing power.

Prof Kingsley Moghalu warned about this in 2020

“The problem with the tariffs and the subsidy on the tariffs is that it prevents the sector which has been privatized from being commercially viable and increasing its capacity or the capacity of private sector operators to be able to provide more electricity to Nigerians,” he noted.
Only a minority of people in Aba pay what can be called a cost reflective tarrif under Band A, most of the rest do not pay a cost reflective tarrif. To make matters worse, geometric power does not get subsides from government, not that it would help.

The result is a sector that is operating at a loss, on a continous basis, and it gets no subsidy to cover that loss. It cannot pay the bills of the gas supplier adequately, and pay staff salaries, and the result is issues in power supply, because the gas company cannot make enough money to cover it's operational costs, and other costs.

Whatever anyone thinks of me, you cannot be forcing companies to operate at a loss and expect premium service. Anytime government sets prices for any product in Nigeria, the result is that domestic industries producing that product collapse.

Government used to supply sugar under ESSENCO, and the result was that by the end of the 1980's we had no strong enough domestic sugar company in nigeria. For a long time most of the sugar consumed in the nation was imported. Now we have a decent sugar industry.

As painful as it is to accept, until government and NIgerians stop lying to themselves, and accept that we got to pay a cost reflective tarrif for power so that power companies can have enough money to quicky pay for maintenance and operational costs, we are going to face this problem for ever and ever.

Ghana and Ivory coast charge cost reflective tarrifs, why can't we?

The problem is not from Abia state, and please note that I am not an indigene of the state, nor am I igbo, nor am I a fan of Otti, and I am not exactly fond of governors who people praise too much

Pricing of power is set by government. And the subsidies paid are not enough to cover losses. The result is a sector that is not commercially viable.

Experts over the years have said it over and over again, that we have to allow the sector set its prices. But government responded with silence, then with the band system...which has been tried in India and has not worked, so India would be removing subsides in 2028.

People dey do things for money. SO long as not enough money is being made due to government mandated price controls from Abuja, this problem would persist.

Same issues with all our discos and gencos.

Stop blaming the Federal government other states regulating their electricity markets are not complaining why is it in Abia that we face unwarranted disruptions and total blackout,ABA power mismanagement needs to be curbed not to talk about the increased state budget, a staggering 38billion naira and other FAAC allocation that run in billions.question yourself if that is not enough for Alex Otti to call this disastrous and disturbing situation to order .

The Federal Government has stopped paying electricity subsidies in 17 states that have received full regulatory oversight of their electricity markets from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) under the Electricity Act 2023.
The shift, confirmed by a source in the Budget Office, means state governments are now responsible for funding any gap between the cost-reflective tariff and what consumers pay within their territories.
Abia happens to be part of the states with Electric Market Autonomy trust me we experienced failures and disruption in the past but the past 3months has been hell for businesses and livelihood in Abia

I am not sure about this your postion because I understand their license allows geometric to charge cost reflective rates and I think the rates were higher than the average NERC approved Band A rates.

Not exactly

Band A (20–24 hours supply): Costs between ₦219.70 and ₦241.45 per kWh for non-MD customers, with higher maximum demand (MD) tiers scaling higher.
Band B (16–20 hours supply): Priced from ₦180.77 up to ₦203 per kWh.
Band C (12–16 hours supply): Ranges between ₦145 and ₦205 per kWh.
Band D & E (Lower supply bands): Proportionally lower baseline rates based on committed daily service hours under Aba Power Tariff Bands & Unit Rate
The band paying cost reflective tarrif is Band A. The others are not paying cost reflective tarrifs, and while higher than other parts of the country, it isn't cost reflective.

Yes, but it doesn't mean that they are letting cost reflective tarrifs be charged. That's still in the hands of NERC.

38 billion doesn't do much for electric power. Plus, states got needs, far more needs.

Also, again, the state has not allowed cost reflective tarrifs to be charged...and you do not relieve distortions caused by decades of cost reflective tarrifs not being charged in a few months.

Finally, it should be pointed out that Geomertic is a private company, as is its gas supplier.

Anyway, if states allow cost reflective tarrifs to be charged, things may improve eventually.

Where are you getting your lies from. Abia govt is not in charge of any power. Geometric supplies only aba. Who supplies the remaining part of the state. If fed govt handed power to states did it hand transmission lines, feeder, wires and poles, substation or it only handed a piece of legislation. When enugu govt decided to regulate pricing of electricity, what did ekdc tell them. To go and build their own electricity infrastructure. You expect state govt to build electricity infrastructure from scratch in 1 year of autonomy but fed govt cannot donso in 66 years

Oga get your facts right aba power is in charge of supplying electricity to ABA region not Geometric as you stated.Abia is not the only state granted state electricity Autonomy by NERC several other states are doing well with proper management procedures in place.Abia was granted electricity Autonomy since Dec 2025 and you can attest that the past 3months have been the worst, were they getting money from heaven in the past, crippling so buisnesses across the region.

Even so, it's not much for electricity

Also, Aba power supplies Aba..Not the entire state.

Again, if you want better power, the federal government has to allow the power sector charge a cost reflective tarrif

And as I stated only a minority of consumers are paying a cost reflective tarrif. i.e band A tarrifs.

We could ask questions when everyone pays a cost reflective tarrif.

You have just proven my point.

No cost reflective tarrif, no light. States are not allowed to depart from NERC template of charging. Same issue.

Federal.goverment better let cost reflective tarrifs be charged.

By the way, I am not arguing for otti. If you want to vote him out, vote him out. Personally he is not a great governor.

I am merely pointing out why power supply is problematic in Nigeria. And why it won't improve even if you change or keep Otti on the sit
