A fresh political and religious controversy is unfolding ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election after Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas defended the decision of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria to support President Bola Tinubu.

Kawas, who is the President-General of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, has come under criticism following the group’s endorsement of Tinubu’s re-election bid.

But in a recent interview on Arise TV, Kawas pushed back against those questioning his credibility, insisting that his involvement in Nigerian politics did not begin with the Tinubu administration.

According to him, he has spent about 25 years in the clergy and has previously supported several major political figures, including Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.

Kawas particularly pointed to his previous support for Peter Obi.

He said he travelled with Obi during the early stages of Obi’s presidential ambition, attended campaign events and even paid transportation expenses for six clergymen.

Yet, Kawas argued, nobody called him a fake bishop at the time.

He made a similar argument about his relationship with former President Goodluck Jonathan, saying he supported Jonathan from his days as deputy governor of Bayelsa State and later served on Jonathan’s presidential campaign council.

Kawas said he was the only bishop on that campaign council and campaigned extensively for Jonathan.

But his most striking statement came when he addressed his current support for President Bola Tinubu.

Kawas asked why his decision to support Tinubu should suddenly make people question whether he is a genuine bishop.

His explanation?

He said he had prayed and that God had led him to support Tinubu.

That claim has now become one of the major talking points surrounding the controversy.

Rufai Oseni Fires Back

Political commentator Rufai Oseni has also weighed in on the controversy.

In a response to the claim, Oseni questioned the basis of Kawas' assertion that God had directed him to support Tinubu.

Oseni challenged the bishop to show evidence that God had specifically told him that it was time to support the president, raising a broader question about whether divine authority should be invoked to justify partisan political choices.

Woe unto them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. (Jude 1:11 )
These are the false prophets that are overtly introducing money politics into the christiandoom. A bribe blind the eyes and perverse justice.

Why am I not surprised that these Obi supporters are ready to question the existence of God just to sell the fraud that has been roundly rejected by voters since 2014?
