The University of Chicago is banning generative Al, laptops, phones, and wearables in its core social science courses for undergraduates starting this fall. The policy, outlined in a memo from division head Jenny Trinitapoli, will require students to read assignments on paper and complete coursework independently, without Al assistance.

The goal is to teach students "to read, write, and think without dependence on Al," extending a similar device ban the university's law school introduced earlier this year.

Reasonable accommodations will still be made for students with disabilities, and the policy applies only to undergraduate courses, not graduate programs.

Only first year students? AI shouldn't even be used in doing research anywhere on campus grounds so students learn how to do the leg work as far as research is concerned. Schools, in general, should be AI-free zones. 😒😒

Good moves. 80% of students don't reason but use AI.
But it's the West who said Ai will make things easy.

All of us are using AI and that is the dangerous slope of AI. I writr with AI, then another AI agent is what my reader will use to interpret what I wrote and summarize.

In the process, humanity has lost its art of human intelligence and ingenuity....to a soulless machine.

Humans can barely solve statistics and probabilities without Ai these days. Very annoying.

INEC should also ban Nigeria politician from using AI to run the government decision. AI don't know how and when Nigeria switched to Democracy government. All policy is not working properly for we Nigeria. Say no to AI generated policies

I feel insulted when you use AI to write me a letter or email or a message. I can let it go if it is not personal but for man to man messages, once I see you're using AI, I stop reading because to me, I don't know whether you know what you wrote or you know what your machine wrote.

Gbamsulotey oooooo, l agree with the school, l don't subscribe to using AI for studies, sometimes I ask questions via AI Platforms especially if what I am asking is not very clear to me but I answer, do all my research & school work, in my own original words with the Brain, Baba God gave to me and it has put 2 Masters Degree in my bag ooooo with few publications & books that is in the hands of people in different countries on earth oooooo hahaha 😂

If they had verified secondary school and elementary school certificates and banned students from trafficking heroin.....

I remember history teaching us that there was a time when people were burning down factories because of machines and they swore it will make people lazy. I remember also when we were not allowed to use calculator today even primary school children are using computer to do their homework.

I think soon we will have a framework and AI will become the normal standard.
