While people of Kwara state focused on building materials, the people of Ibadan and Ijebus dominated spare parts and vehicle business in Lagos decades ago. The Yorubas were displaced by the Igbos market strategy which involved selling cheap products, offering alternatives to original products. The only place where Yorubas still have influence in spare part business is Owode Onirin. All other places selling spare parts in Lagos are dominated by the Igbos . Now, that the Chinese have arrived. They should be allowed to set up there shops and offer alternatives to Nigerians. Or the Lagos State Government should establish Chinese auto spare parts markets separate from the ones dominated by the Igbos. https://www.tiktok.com/video/7685344871292407047/ This post is shared via TikTok Lite. Everyone is going to lose their jobs. The Chinese will take over everything. Whether Igbo or Yoruba or Hausa or the fourth largest tribe the Ijaws. You will lose your jobs because the Chinese will make it cheaper. You don't need to go to China anymore to buy spare parts. Not only spare parts. Other goods. The Chinese are right at your doorstep. |

malcom1X:Nothing wrong, if they find it difficult to compete with the Chinese they should do another business and leave spare parts |

Biodun556:It is down to Alex Ekwenme who liberalised imports. Ibos had positioned themselves earlier by having links in Taiwan for fake spare parts. Ekwenme also ensured that duties on imported spare parts was zero. This killed the Yoruba dominance in spare parts business as the Yorubas were sourcing from local manufacturing hubs. Cheaper and fake spare parts imported from Taiwan drove the Yorubas out of business and then their local suppliers. Ekwenme was so invested in destroying local production concentrated in the SW that he even convinced Shagari to build a river port in Onitsha to divert imports from Lagos directly to Onitsha. Instead of expanding sea ports in the SS , Ekwenme wasted money building a useless one way port at Onitsha that has never functioned because the river route can not handle vessels with large hauls thereby making it more expensive to ship goods from abroad using smaller vessels. Note also that Onitsha port was designed exclusively to handle imports which makes it even more expensive to use by shipping companies because when they make port calls, they are only offloading and not loading on return. That policy by Ekwenme was motivated out of pure spite to destroy SW industrial base and prop their people to dominate the retail and import sector. That policy not only destroyed our industrial base but cemented Nigeria as an import based economy, massive job losses and future joblessness, drain on FX . |

Some people will blame the Igbos for not being able to satisfy their wives. |

malcom1X:Alex Ekwenme supervised the deliberate deindustrialization of Nigeria because he wasn't happy that Nigeria's industrial base was clustered around the SW. Ekwenme is the one you should thank for why your people have come to dominate the retail sector and he did it out of pure spite for the SW and to get his people to dominate the import and retail sector. Ekwenme single handedly destroyed hundreds of industries and oversaw job losses . The reason we have a high unemployment rate is because of Ekwenme and your import racket. |

Biodun556:The river port in Onitsha is testament to how Ekwenme wanted to divert Nigeria's economic hub away from the SW to his SE. It failed woefully . If that port could function , I tell you that they won't be in Lagos . |

oglalasioux:The reason you guys are against Tinubu's reforms is because he floated the naira which inadvertently has slowed down imports. Any President who discourages importation and promotes local production , is an enemy of the Ibo. And the most annoying thing is that your region contributes next to nothing in FX earnings but are the ones calling for subsidized FX that will go into imports that will further drain our FX reserves and see to total deindustrialization . I wonder how you guys will sustain such a model in your Biafra ? How will your govt pay for imported goods when you export nothing ? |

Biodun556:I welcome the Chinese to set up retail outlet business in Nigeria. I remember how some Ibo guys broke into a Chinese businessman's warehouse in China town , Lagos and stole shoes According to the arrested suspects , they said they stole the Chinese businessman's goods because he was selling cheaper than them. See excuse . |

FSBoperator:How can a vice President to President Shehu Shagari have the constitutional power to "single-handedly" orchestrate national economic or industrial destruction. Under the 1979 Constitution, executive authority rested firmly with the President and the Federal Executive Council. Una dey spew rubbish for this nairaland. It dey like say I go leave this nairaland for una No one is talking about Babangida Structural Adjustment programme that destroyed manufacturing. |
| Re: Chinese Shops; How Ibadans And Ijebus Were Displaced From Spare Part Business by motymop: 11:50am On Sep 15 |
Because of tribal differences una no dey see the big picture. The Chinese will displace the remaining Yoruba, the kwara in building material and both the igbo and floor the market with low quality products They are looking for new market, if you allow them to occupy the market then we are done for as a nation They can also form their own mafai and increase price like anybody else |

malcom1X:The VP , by virtue of the constitution, heads Nigeria's Presidential Economic Team . Policies and advisories stem from the Presidential Economic Team headed by the VP. |

FSBoperator:This was 1979 with a different constitution. Nigeria was using a different constitution. And besides when Buhari carried out a coup he was investigated and they checked that he wasn't corrupt and was let go. Talk another story |

malcom1X:SAP was an austerity policy and it banned importation of wide variety of goods . It was meant to save local industries and reverse the failed Ekwenme policies. |
| Re: Chinese Shops; How Ibadans And Ijebus Were Displaced From Spare Part Business by malcom1X: 12:01pm On Sep 15 |
FSBoperator:Under the 1979 Constitution, executive power rested with the President. Executive bodies, such as the Federal Ministry of Industries and the Ministry of Commerce, directly managed import licenses and industrial regulations. And these bodies were headed by northerners. The vice president's role had nothing to do with the economy. |

malcom1X:My friend, Alex Ekwenme as VP headed the Presidential Economic Team and his policies liberalised imports to the detriment of local manufacturing. |

FSBoperator:You mean the Buhari policies because after Shagari it was Buhari. Then Babangida. And Babangida introduced SAP. To reverse Buhari's policy. Your arguments don't hold water guy. |
| Re: Chinese Shops; How Ibadans And Ijebus Were Displaced From Spare Part Business by malcom1X: 12:07pm On Sep 15 |
FSBoperator:Guy stop lying. Under the 1979 Constitution, the Vice President did not head a "Presidential Economic Team" tasked with drafting federal trade policies. |
