Well just like the leaders most of us are complaining about.....the employers who are part of the citizens who joins in complaining about the leaders are doing exactly what the leaders are doing?.....which is taking advantage of the weak and corrupt system to exploit others while paying them peanuts and enriching themselves.... Nigeria will become a better place when we are all ready or when at least 70% of us are ready....as for now everyone can keep on deceiving themselves. |

omoredia:As you have in America, abi? The federal minimum wage in the United States was last raised on July 24, 2009, when it increased to $7.25 per hour. At least, we even make attempts. To the issue itself, Employers must work with the law and should be made examples of where they default. |
| Re: Nigerian Lady Kicks Against Employees Who Pay Their Staff Less Than 70k by Flangelo12: 1:29pm On Sep 15 |
tiswell:Nonsense. You can't ask government to increase minimum wage then turn around and avoid paying the same minimum. |

Mattswaggz:it's always easier said than done. How many employers in Naija can pay their staff 70k minimum? Be realistic, baba. |

Every worker in Nigeria is a slave to the corporate system, but government workers and private workers. But what I find funny is that some slave workers (both government and private, especially government) complains of poor pays and yet defend the people who are making them work themselves out for the same poor pay. That's Nigeria for you. |

Is this not what we say when you'll blame FG and make ridiculous demands like 500k minimum wage? How many people will enjoy it? How many companies and even states will implement it? Yet, everyone will suffer the inflation that follows. |
| Re: Nigerian Lady Kicks Against Employees Who Pay Their Staff Less Than 70k by OlujobaSamuel: 1:46pm On Sep 15 |
tiswell:She is not even aware that some companies are exempted from the minimum wage based on their capacity, like less that 10employees, less that 200m annual turnover, etc That's why we have unemployed, underemployed and employed, if we insist that they must all pay, the underemployed would be erased, while we have more unemployed in the economy |

| Re: Nigerian Lady Kicks Against Employees Who Pay Their Staff Less Than 70k by lagonovo: 1:51pm On Sep 15 |
She needs to understand the law first. An employee that can't even do her due diligence on basic things. That is the first sign of incompetence. |

Sirchiboy:How many businesses has she has established and how many staff does she have to pay at the end of every month? My current wage bill in my business is 4.3 million naira every month, I have 28 staff to worry about at the end of every month. That's 28 families to feed, aside my own. That does not include training, consumables, accomodation, rent, equipments, maintainance, power, utilities, taxes, levies.. etc.. Meanwhile, we have Tinubu's toxic economic policy to contend with everyday. Cost of Fuel is up there, power is not cheap, price of consumables and materials going through the roof. This is why I don't tolerate any APC scoundrel around me. Raise your price by 1% and have some customers dump you like hot lead. Never listen to anyone who has never been there and has never run a successful business, giving you advice on how to run one. |
| Re: Nigerian Lady Kicks Against Employees Who Pay Their Staff Less Than 70k by stainlink(m): 1:59pm On Sep 15 |
Cases are different. There are employers that barely get up to the 70k as profit at the end of the month. Say, an employer that run a business center in a remote location or a petty food seller that has a small stand somewhere that can barely feed the family. How about a private school that has few students and a sizable number of staff. Location and circumstances should be used as part of the condition to make conclusions |

Dalohad:You're not feeding 28 families. You make it sound like you're doing them a favour. You're simply paying for services rendered to you. If your cash flow cannot sustain your wage bill, then check your business model. Anyway, this is Nigeria... |

The employees are free to leave if they feel the pay is not at par with their service. They don't have to work with that employer's business model. Kaycee54321: |

Kaycee54321:Dangote's workers protested last year because he would not let them join NUPENG. They picketed his office, when they wouldn't bulge, he sacked them and asked them to go, as he didn't need their services anymore. They refused to leave and had to beg. Na by force to enjoy your services? oga go na, they refused. Listen, I come from a business family. A family that has trained and employed thousands of people over the span of 50 years.. No one is indispensable, No worker is.. Yes, every CEO must strive to hunt for top talent, but if you are insatiable about your pay and won't skill-up or provide commensurate value, you can leave, it will create space for even better employees. During the Japa post-Covid years, people left their jobs without even telling their employers and travelled to the UK, Canada, US. The companies did not stop surviving.. Have you employed people before? Do you have a business that has seen Presidents come and go for 30-40 years? |
| Re: Nigerian Lady Kicks Against Employees Who Pay Their Staff Less Than 70k by lagonovo: 2:22pm On Sep 15 |
Many employers don't make enough to sustain such pay due to many factors impacting businesses in Nigeria. In fact many employers often use personal money from other investments to pay staff. stainlink: |
| Re: Nigerian Lady Kicks Against Employees Who Pay Their Staff Less Than 70k by Kaycee54321(m): 2:26pm On Sep 15 |
Dalohad:You're not getting the point. Even if you once employed Emperor Caesar and President George Bush, what I'm telling you is, you didn't "feed them." You can either pay their wages or you can't. If you decide to retain a worker based on sentiment and not derived value, that's really on you. I'm not even arguing you should pay minimum wage. It's like flogging a dead horse. The country is lawless so you can really afford to pay people 30k and tell them to say "thank you"...for the class of people who can live that way. |
| Re: Nigerian Lady Kicks Against Employees Who Pay Their Staff Less Than 70k by Kaycee54321(m): 2:31pm On Sep 15 |
lagonovo:Ditto. An employee and employer can part ways with each other. It's not a blood covenant. I really don't care what anybody pays anybody. I can't use grammar to fix a failed system. In capitalist Nigeria, you can grossly underpay workers and have them feeding off your fingers. It's the system. My objection is that narrative of "I'm feeding 28 families..." It's not charity. You're paying the wages you owe. |
| Re: Nigerian Lady Kicks Against Employees Who Pay Their Staff Less Than 70k by lagonovo: 2:39pm On Sep 15 |
Why the fixation with his use of "feed"? It depends on how you look at it. It may be viewed as him being empathetic enough to know 28 families may have issues if payments are not made, something many business customers in Nigeria don't give a damn about. When US government was on lockdown over budget issues, "feeding" was emphasized categorically aside from other bills. That shouldn't be used as a deviation from the conversation on minimum wage and the official categorization as well as freedom to leave a job. Kaycee54321: |
| Re: Nigerian Lady Kicks Against Employees Who Pay Their Staff Less Than 70k by Kaycee54321(m): 2:48pm On Sep 15 |
lagonovo:I'm not deviating from the conversation on minimum wage. Even the 70k minimum wage is not even livable income. I'm also Pro leave a job or fire an employee in line with agreed upon terms of engagement. The narrative of "I have 28 families to feed" as a justification to pay below minimum wage is as condescending as it's classist. Except the business in question is an NGO distributing relief to the less privileged, that's not the way to go. If you hire ten people, you owe them compensation for the work done. If your business can't pay, re-negotiate or let them go; and hire cheaper labour (the clime already vastly supports it regardless of the English they speak about labour laws..." ) And not, "I'm feeding many families..." |

Thats the point. There are business that provide employment for young people on transit in life. Secondary school leavers, people waiting for bigger things etc. lagonovo: |

Any employer, who can not afford the minimum wage should do the job by himself. It's that simple. |

tiswell:Silly question If you can’t afford to pay minimum wage you can’t afford to have employees. Employing 10 people and paying them 50k each when that salary should ideally pay only 2-3 people (and still won’t even be enough for them to survive) is not a flex. |

Bro you're not even comparing like for like 😂 Yes the federal minimum wage in the US hasn't been updated since 2009 but the reality is the federal minimum wage in the USA isn't really relevant like in Nigeria. States actually determine their own minimum wages. The federal wage was initially pushed when many states were not implementing minimum wages so a federal minimum wage was established to force the states to but since then states have been updating their wages and eg states like Illinois where I live have a minimum wage of $15 so the federal rate isn't really relevant. Some states like DC NYac etc have min wage of $17 and above. And the reason it makes sense for states to determine minimum wage is that cost of living varies widely across states, NYC cost is very different from Alabama so a federal minimum wage doesn't make sense and just led to fights in Congress about how if they increase it to levels Democrats in eg NYC want then it punishes low cost states and if they keep it at low rate for low income states it pushes poverty in higher cost states so resolution was states determine minimum wages. You're trying to compare apples with bananas by using the US Federal minimum wage as proof that Nigeria is doing better 😂 The way you guys keep parroting this US minimum wage is $7 like you know what you're talking about is hilarious 😂 Flangelo12: |
