Peller And Jarvis: When Marriage Becomes A Reality Show by uche87(op): 3:38pm On Sep 16
There are different reports suggesting that couples who regularly post about their relationships online may be less happy or more insecure than those who keep their romantic lives private. Some studies have also suggested that heavy posters may rely on likes and comments for emotional reassurance, while people who feel uncertain about their partner’s feelings may increase their relationship visibility online as a way of coping with that doubt.

Public displays can sometimes be an unconscious effort to convince others and perhaps themselves, that a troubled relationship is stronger than it really is.

Research tends to confirm what we have always suspected about relationship publicity on social media: sometimes, it is more about make-believe. When Femi Fani-Kayode and his former wife, Precious Chikwendu, had their very public spat, it was reported that some of the cosy and lovey-dovey pictures we had seen online were taken after major disagreements. The smiles and laughter, in that telling, were cosmetic, largely responses to rumours circulating on blogs. The reality on the ground was reportedly very different.

I was also around when Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh was posting Olakunle Churchill online, showcasing the gifts he bought her and telling us he was the best thing since sliced bread. Toke Makinwa also followed a similar route with Maje Ayida. I remember her content about marriage during the early days of Instagram. A friend once showed me her page and talked about how perfect her marriage appeared and how much he desired such a life. He apparently checked her page every day.

Regina Daniels’ marriage to Pa Ned Nwoko also seemed perfect from the outside, with the “too many wins” narrative, until the cookie crumbled and some dirty linen was washed in public.

These relationships have all faced serious publicised marital crises, although Regina Daniels and Pa Ned Nwoko’s situation remains a matter of continuing public reporting. This is just one of many examples of “reality-show marriages” that have been publicised, with “online in-laws” running into the millions.

Let me also add that Carter Efe, speaking on a podcast with Madam Joyce in the UK, reflected on his own couple content and said he struggled to get his partner’s cooperation because of turbulence in the relationship. He made the comments while also raising questions about the Peller and Jarvis relationship.

I am not a fan of celebrity marriages. I also believe marital affairs are too complicated to withstand constant publicity or be turned into a source of entertainment. I believe that, just as we have “state secrets” in governance, we should also have “marriage secrets”, matters that should go through a rigid process of declassification before any public release.

When I look at the relationship content of Peller, 21, and Jarvis, 24, which reflects their age, I can’t help but smile. They seem funny, and sometimes it can be too much information. The good thing is that they are making money from it. Nigeria is economically complex, and it would be tricky not to stick to what you know how to do to make money.

I hope the marriage isn’t all noise and no substance. I pray it won’t become one of those most-talked-about celebrity marriages that end up damaging the reputation of the institution and misleading the younger generation.

The reputation of marriage has already been badly battered on social media by couples who believe strongly in the “court of public opinion.” Perhaps some things are better lived than broadcast.

Social media marriages always end up the same way.. what you notice in one, two or three matters can also be applicable to the fourth matter. I still need more words tho but ran out for lack of words on this subject matter.

As someone opines, only a fool or someone who does not have anything significant going on in his life knows what's going on in the lives of one Jarvis and one Peller.

I think they deserve each other
No one is going to be real to them anymore
Or at least they won’t perceive anyone as real again
Whatever happens in life to them later on is not really in their control but I think it’s going to be worth the thrill for them
