PETER OBI AND THE ANAMBRA DEBT RECORD: FACTS VERSUS FICTION

By Okoi Obono-obla

The Anambra State Government's detailed rebuttal to Mr. Peter Obi's claims on "Phantom Debts" has finally laid bare the hollow foundation of the Obi mystique.

For years, Mr. Obi has postured as the frugal saint who turned Anambra into an El Dorado and has used that false pedestal to relentlessly and sanctimoniously attack the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The facts now show otherwise.

Four facts stand out from the Government's statement:

First, he spent an estimated $4.05 billion in eight years - about N5.4 trillion at today's rate. Yet Anambra was left without functional urban or rural water schemes, with 78 out of 179 communities without any public primary school, with dilapidated public hospitals that only 27% of the people used, and with rising poverty and insecurity.

Second, contrary to his claim that he borrowed nothing, he left behind eight external loans totaling $123.77 million at signing. According to the Debt Management Office as of June 30, 2026, the outstanding balance is $92.35 million or N127.4 billion, which the current government services monthly with hundreds of millions of Naira.

Third, contrary to his claim that he cleared all salaries and pensions, he left verified arrears. These include salaries of staff of the defunct Water Corporation which ended in court judgments, and 16 months arrears of primary school teachers from the Mbadinuju era which his own government verified but paid only five months.

Fourth, his claim of leaving N2.13 billion in Ecological Fund in First Bank Account No. 2018779464, UNIZIK Branch, Awka, is demonstrably false. The certified statement of account shows the account is an IGR-Consolidated Revenue Account and has never held such amount from inception in 2011 till date. The question is: where is the money?

The so-called N75 billion savings remains what the State Government correctly calls nebulous creative accounting.

Conclusion:

The evidence is clear. If a small, homogenous state like Anambra could not be transformed despite $4.05 billion in spending and massive borrowing, how can the same manager promise to fix a complex federation of 36 states and the FCT?

Mr. Obi's eight years was an unmitigated failure, now masked by revisionism. He should desist from deceiving Nigerians with sanctimonious sermons. The desperation is even clearer in his reported four-year single-term pact with his running mate, in direct contradiction of the two-term, eight-year provision of the 1999 Constitution.

Nigerians deserve honesty, not theatre.

How has Lagos transformed in 27 years under AD/ACN/APC and the so called master plan?

If in 27 years Lagos state cannot boast of having a single LG with all its roads paved and drainages properly covered, then what exactly is in the so called master plan?

Transportation?
Road Network?
Drainage system?
Pipe borne water?
Waste management?
Education?

Lagos state has the largest loans in the federation after the FG.

This is from a 2017 thread.

Peter Obi Demanded N7.5bn For Sponsoring My Election‎ – Obiano Insists

Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano has re-echoed his allegation that his predecessor, Mr Peter Obi
demanded the sum of N7.5billion from him for sponsoring his election in 2013.

Obiano and his predecessor, Obi have had a frosty relationship shortly after his swearing in.

Obi has however denied that he demanded for the sum of N7.5billion from Obiano, saying that his problem with him was his (Obiano’s) underperformance.

Obi said if he needed the said sum, he would have simply taken it from the N75billion he left for the Obiano administration at the end of his tenure.

But Governor Obiano while speaking on Wednesday evening at Ezechima Primary School, Onitsha where he inaugurated his reelection campaigns in Onitsha North Council Area, said the clarification became necessary because of the recent accusations against him by the former Governor.

He stated that his predecessor had demanded the sum of N7.5billion from him as funds spent in prosecuting the election on his behalf, but that he refused to pay the money because it was not true.

Obiano said he refused to pay because he strongly believed that public funds should be used for public good, and not to settle godfathers.

These, he said, was the reason they fell apart.

The governor said that another reason he refused to pay the money was because he was aware that enough money was raised for his campaign by his friends and associates, all of which were never accounted for by the former governor.

On the actual sum the former Governor claimed he left behind, Governor Obiano made it clear that he inherited liability of about N127 billion debt from him in contracts awarded and other responsibilities, which he has been religiously undertaking in the spirit of continuity.

He said Obi flagged off several roads even on the day he was leaving office and saddled him with the burden of paying for it, but he assured the people that he has his eyes on the ball and will not allow anything to distract him from fulfilling his promises.

The Chairman of the Governor’s Re-election Campaign Committee, Chief Victor Umeh said APGA as the political spirit of Ndigbo, has in the past three and half years, availed Anambra good governance at its best, reminding the people that the upcoming guber election was not about Willie Obiano but about ensuring that the state remained free from political godfatherism.

A former Central Bank Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo in his speech said that at this time, the State needs a tested hand like Governor Obiano who has the experience and expertise to effectively steer her affairs.

They should run a DNA test for Peter Obi. A state that produces literary giant like Chinua Achebe, Dora Akunyili, Charles Soludo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Alex Ekwueme, the great Emeka Anyaoku, Arthur Eze, Cosmas etc. can never produce a super dullard like PO. Something is wrong somewhere
Re: Peter Obi & The Anambra Debt Record: Facts VS Fiction By Obono-Obla by helinues: 6:57am On Sep 17
I have only 2 questions

From the handover note Obi left for Obiano, there are 2 important information missing

1. There is no record or explanation of how the local government allocation was spent for good 7.years as Peter Obi refused to conduct the LG election

2. From the acclaimed Nbn Obi left, there is no indication of how much the state government owed the state contractors, how much billions of naira post cheque was issued to them which they can only cash out after Obi's tenure

I restricted to asking questions, so I expected response from the Obidients not insult or attack

Blame Obi's supporters because without them, a character like Peter would have faded into a thin air

Peter Obi being the Nigeria president is not really my concern but how Obi as Nigeria president will represent the country on international stage without answering questions with rubbish

Just that OBI lies so much that he forgot he has a past THAT HE CANT track... he talks too much and recklessly..No one is ever like what he paints himself to be...Bible even attested to it..."He who is without a sin should cast the first stone" it means no one is clean...But to Obi, he is the best thing that came out of Nigeria..SAINT OBI

However, the reason for my post is that states were fucking poor and still relatively poor till date ...5 TRILLION IS so LITTLE TO RUN A STATE FOR MORE THAN 7 YEARS

4.5 billion cannot do much for a state in eight years.

That's very very scanty money in my opinion . Hence the borrowing .

To build standard healthcare and educational facilities would cost far more than what the state got.

Nigeria has a money problem. And this report shows it well well
Re: Peter Obi & The Anambra Debt Record: Facts VS Fiction By Obono-Obla by nairalanda1(m): 7:16am On Sep 17
As an example, Anambra has a teaching hospital that if it were to be funded to world class would need something like 1 billion dollars annually. At least.

Also, the state university if it were to be made top class would need something like 500 million dollars or more annually.

5.4 billion over eight years is not good enough. No wonder he was borrowing.

Nigeria has a money making problem

How can me and my family vote for an ethnic & religious agendist who is being touted as a messiah by his followers?

A messiah that couldn’t transform his household wants to come and transform my entire community.

Anytime I see or hear that slogan “Vote Wisely” from his vacuous supporters, I always tell them “Yes, I will vote wisely by voting for my own Devil who is far better than their own Angel Michael of Agulu.

Is debt a crime? Has Tinubu not outborrowed all previous presidents combined despite not paying subsidies? I blame Obi, who seems to think it's a huge positive to be seen as having not borrowed a single penny. America is the most indebted country in the world. It is borrowing without anything to show that is the problem. Not debt in itself.

How come soludo is the one paying, after Obi, there was Obiano, if Obi was owing, the money left should have been used to clear the debt if the debt was in existence then. We all know about the issue of ghost workers and fraud in civil service before Integrated payment system and bvn

Another Peter Obi nonsense. Peter Obi is not Nigeria's problem today.

Tinubu and his illegitimate government with their Neocon imperialist policies to satisfy his puppet masters are the main problem.

Fuel price is now 1500. This is not a joke, this is our reality now. And yet, look where the distractions are coming from.

We know this script.
