Lol... All this misinformation to defend blatant extortion. In the same economics, there's something called competition and when a group of people start acting like a cartel, it is slowly becoming a monopoly. It's one of the reason petrol marketers are making the government still allow petrol importation, to prevent Dangote being a monopoly. If the Chinese don't come personally, they can always have Nigerians to act as fronts and still achieve the same results. Nigerians wouldn't have problems with the price disparities if it was negligible. But 100% and 200% upwards price margin is just diabolical. What we learnt in business studies is that once a business starts, it's bound to make some level of losses, then it breaks even after some them before eventually making profit. Nigerians are the only people I know that never want to break even, let alone make losses. They want to start a business today and buy benz tomorrow at the expense of their fellow Nigerians. And we all keep shouting that the government is the problem. We've not even gone into the fake products category yet. That's a discussion for another day. |

I think it's easy for igbo traders to drive out Chinese from South East, but not in Lagos or South West. because the Yoruba that own Lagos and south west land don't care who sale what in their land, they just want best for the money. And unless the igbo can sell the narrative to Yoruba or convince the govt, it won't be easy |

erad:I can tell you for a fact that the margins an importer makes is not more than 5% the turnover is where the money comes in. The real cost drivers are the import duty, freight, clearing and distribution. Let us stop this myopic nature. There are laws designed to protect consumers from cartel like practices, has the government every followed them? |

LadyExcellency:That is what I am talking about. If we cannot break that cycle we can never develop. We need visionary leadership. These things that are big industrial products today (to reply someone else) all started from small scale cottage industries. The Chinese invasion is a wake up call and a challenge. It is a fork in the road and it is up to us to decide where to go from here. Eat them up or eat ourselves up. |

franchasng:what's the bullshit about national interest? If u lots have national interest at heart u won't triple the price of goods to rip people off cos to u u believe u have the monopoly. If u lots have national interest at heart u won't deliberately increase prices of goods cos your brother lost election If u lots have national interest at heart in the first place u won't encourage importation by killing local industries, u think u are wise but Chinese are beating u to your game now. So u never had national interest at heart so this is just the repercussions of your wickedness, the Chinese saw what u are doing n how greedy u are n that's y they came here themselves to sell it directly so u won't b ripping people off again |

PulaPower:God bless you! Inflation is extremely high in the country, and the major root cause are the middle men (distributors and wholesalers). When they buy from the manufacturers, before the goods finally gets to the final consumer, the price triples. But if retailed to consumers, we get at a very fair price and even the manufacturer is at the advantage of making more turnover. Why do you think Dangote directly supplying his fuel to companies, businesses, etc that has reservoirs of 250ltr and above? |

BATified2023:Oga local industries died from SAP era when it was clear that the cost of production especially to get standardised products was high because govt failed in making sure that the factors of production and doing business was clearly accessible to businesses especially Power and roads. This is life nothing exists in a vacuum once a vacuum is created, something will step in to fill it. That is where importation came in. No one killed importation but rather it was the govt. |
| Re: Protest Against Chinese Traders In Nigeria: The Untold Truth by Nijablast: 10:01am On Sep 17 |
OP, you need to go back to Secondary school "economics says producers must sell through middlemen" is simply incorrect. The basic question in economics is what distribution arrangement is most efficient, not whether a middleman must exist. If a manufacturer produces a machine for ₦1 million and can efficiently sell it directly to the customer for ₦1.3 million, there is nothing economically wrong with: Manufacturer → Customer If a distributor can reach 500 customers that the manufacturer cannot easily reach, then: Manufacturer → Distributor → Customer may make more sense. So when someone says "the producer shouldn't sell directly to the consumer because economics doesn't work that way," that's not a general economic principle. Direct-to-consumer selling is a well-established business model. |

LadyExcellency:u forgot to tell us that p n g monitor what the wholesalers sells n they know fully well that wholesalers aren't ripping retailers n final consumers off. It's an organized market system where everyone knows the company price n expected returns unlike our greedy brothers who sells an unregulated market where they buy at lower price n triple the price without thinking of the economic implications of the final consumers. And besides, u forgot to tell us that p n g will not increase their prices deliberately because people didn't vote their brother |

The funny thing about this issue is that Igbo retailers are all over the continent doing retail business. Which is good for Nigeria diaspora remittance. And when those people push back, it's called xenophobia or hate. Personally, I think it's provocative to do retail (or worse go for political elective post) in competitions with locals and Igbos are the number 1 guilty party. This event should give everyone a moment of reflection. Lastly, Ghana tried creating a law to stop foreigner from doing small business but it did not work. At the end, the commodity market is not emotional, it will move to the best offer. Igbos should offer a better offer, protesting is like pot protesting against kettle. |

Chinese are like human AI, they are in Nigeria to help the LESS save time and cost. Alot of the igbos are still living in denial. Majority WINs here, and Majority wants the Chinese as their products are cheaper and accessible. And trust me, you cannot beat them at this game. It us either you join them now or keep wailing. They provide VALUE for money and. Thats what the common man loves. DEAL WITH IT. |

| Re: Protest Against Chinese Traders In Nigeria: The Untold Truth by FSBoperator: 10:11am On Sep 17 |
There's a Chinese owned quarry in Abuja that mines limestone chippings. Do you know that the tipper guys who work independently at the quarry site will collaborate with the scale operator to not fill the truck with the 40 Tonnes capacity load which goes for about 400k. They will arrange with the scale operator to reduce the payload by as much as 10 tonnes. If they have a consignment contract to supply 10 truck loads, they will be ripping their clients by as much as 100 tonnes which is equivalent to 2 and half truck supply amounting to as much as #1,000,000. The Chinese found out about this unwholesome practices because they noticed more truck movement into their quarrt but less limestone being hurled from their site. The Chinese sacked the Nigerian operators and had one of their own mounts the scale operations. The Chinese are only interested in making sales and if any one in the chain of their operations is undermining sales , the Chinese will find a way to cut them out. This scenario I wrote here applies to the Ibo traders who get their goods from Chinese warehouses at the market but can't move them fast enough because they put too much profit on top. The Chinese saw that this was slowing their inventory sales and so cut the Ibos out of the mix and started selling directly. If I had a distribution company , I will prefer to partner with a retailer who can move my goods and fast as possible so I can order more inventory and so make quicker turnovers The Ibo traders have become an impedinent to Chinese sales operations and so the Chinese cut them off. There is nothing wrong with what the Chinese are doing and it is far better for our import based economy that goods are cheaper for the consumer overall. |
