Nigerians Will Witness Drop In Transportation Costs From October 1, Tinubu Insis by Pakute(op): 7:31pm On Sep 19
President Bola Tinubu has urged state governments to ensure that savings from cheaper CNG-powered transportation translate into lower fares for Nigerians ahead of October 1.

Tinubu gave the charge in a statement on Saturday, updating Nigerians on the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme, which was established following his August 27 meeting with the 36 state governors.

He said the objective agreed with the governors was for more Nigerians to begin experiencing “measurable reductions in transportation costs” from October 1.

“I encourage every state to maintain the momentum towards October 1. Work with transport unions and commercial operators. Support conversion and fleet deployment.

“Facilitate the infrastructure required. Above all, ensure that savings from cheaper energy reach Nigerian citizens through lower fares,” he said.

The President said several states were already recording reductions in transport fares through CNG-powered and electric buses.

He cited Borno, where CNG-powered and electric public transport services carry commuters for between N50 and N100 on routes where commercial operators charge between N300 and N600.

In Kaduna, he said 100 CNG-powered buses had provided free transportation on major routes, carrying about 3.2 million passengers in their first year and saving commuters more than N3.5bn in transport costs.

Tinubu also said CNG buses deployed to Pacesetter Transport in Oyo reduced the Lagos-Ibadan fare from about N8,000 to N3,200 during the initial deployment.

He said alternative-energy transit services in Adamawa had cut fares by as much as 50 per cent, from N8,000 to N4,000, while 100 CNG buses in Enugu had reduced the Enugu-Nsukka fare from N2,500 to N1,500.

In Plateau, government-supported buses carry about 13,000 commuters daily at N200, compared with more than N500 charged commercially, he said.

Tinubu also cited CNG-converted commercial vehicles operating on several Abuja routes through a partnership with the National Union of Road Transport Workers, saying passengers received a 40 per cent fare reduction.

According to him, fares from Area 1 to Gwagwalada had fallen from N1,500 to N900, Nyanya from N700 to N420, and Wuse from N400 to N240.

He said passengers on the Suleja-Abuja route in Niger paid N550, compared with about N800, while Abia had deployed 40 electric buses with fares subsidised by 50 per cent.

“These are not projections. Nigerians are already experiencing these savings,” Tinubu said.

The President said the Federal Government would support states to expand the programme, noting that disruptions to global energy supplies were putting pressure on petrol and diesel prices and increasing transportation costs.

“Through our partnership with the NURTW, passengers on CNG-converted commercial vehicles on several Abuja commuter routes receive a 40 per cent fare reduction,” he said.

Tinubu said Nigeria, as a gas-rich country, could reduce its exposure to global energy price shocks by expanding the use of alternative energy for transportation.

He said more than 120,000 vehicles had been converted to CNG over the past three years, while the country now had more than 400 certified conversion centres and over 90 CNG refuelling stations.

He also highlighted CNG developments in Edo, Kano, Delta, Kwara, Lagos and Akwa Ibom. Tinubu said Edo had 50 CNG buses in active service, while Kano had converted more than 1,000 commercial vehicles.

He added that Delta, Kwara and Lagos were expanding CNG-supported transport services, while Akwa Ibom had taken delivery of 50 CNG buses ahead of commercial operations.

The President said the Federal Government would continue to support CNG infrastructure, conversion capacity and participation by transport operators, manufacturers and private investors.

“At a time like this, our answer cannot be to return to the ruinous petrol subsidy regime that consumed trillions of naira and left our economy exposed to every movement in international oil prices, as some have suggested.

“We must accelerate the cheaper alternatives we have been building at home,” he said. Tinubu added,

“Nigeria has the gas. We are building the infrastructure. We are already seeing the savings. “Now we must move faster and scale this so more Nigerians feel those savings in the fares they pay every day."

Bayo will start preparing lies laden speeches to defend him as he only promises without fulfillments. The beautiful thing is that Tinubu told Nigerians not to vote him into the second time if he fsils to give them constant electricity. The National Assembly has installed solar electricity system which is the confirmation of the fact that Tinubu can never provide constant electricity. By his request, Tinubu is going to be booted out of Aso Rock. Obi is coming.
The people they have employed to be attacking Mr Peter Obi have proven that Obi is that solution that Nigeria has been waiting for.

There are 6.7 million commercial transport vehicles registered in Nigeria. There are only 120,000 CNG commercial transport vehicles registered in Nigeria. We can already see that this has failed.

Less than 4% of commercial transport vehicles in Nigeria are CNG powered. This government is grasping at straws.

So nigeria is no longer an oil rich country but now a gas rich country. You see where APC don carry us reach? When they were shouting sai Chanji in 2015 no one asked what kind of change they are bringing
Can Tinubu explain to Nigerians why we were buy gas at higher price than petrol a few weeks back? Even now, gas is around 1200 while petrol is 1400
I hope these clowns realise that CNG is cheaper because it's largely underutilised. Let it reach 50% utility with petrol and you'll see it will start chasing petrol in terms of pricing. Then they'll remind us that it's international market forces that's at play
And these ones were calling Jonathan clueless?!!

Just the time frame between now and October 1st tells you that these people are delusional. There clearly isn't enough infrastructure on ground to show that CNG transportation is having meaningful impact in the sector using a state like Lagos for example. Knowing the procurement and other bureaucratic processes in Nigeria coupled with construction timeframes for each stage, it's clearly not possible to get anything tangible done in just a couple of weeks. Even the vehicles need months to fulfill orders. Never mind sha

Drops of water make up mighty ocean.
More than 4,600 CNG tricycles and hundreds of dedicated CNG buses have been deployed.
Over 11,000 natural gas vehicles including haulage and commercial fleet trucks, have been assembled or refitted.
The federal government aims to hit one million converted or factory-fitted CNG vehicles by 2027

I am happy to have pushed this conversation several times. Nigeria needs transport subsidy, not fuel subsidy.

emkz:
Atiku's campaign needs to clarify the following:

1. He said he would sell crude to local refiners at discounted prices. That means crude would be sold at below market price. That means the nation would take a hit. Where will Atiku get the funds to offset the deficit to government earnings due to the proposed discount? When crude is sold at a discounted rate, it means revenue that could go into education, healthcare, security, and infrastructure is lost. How will Atiku recoup it?

2. Will Atiku subsidize logistics and refining costs too?

3. Paul Ibe said it would be for a period. The country would need a timeline for Atiku's plans. How long will the subsidy run?

4. Paul Ibe used a surgical analogy to say a surgery will not perform two surgeries at once. If someone has blunt trauma on his neck and foot, is Paul Ibe saying the surgeon should focus on the neck and neglect the foot with the risk of the patient bleeding out and dying?

I think the conversation on fuel subsidy needs to be rested. Subsidy benefited the rich who had SUVs and could run generators for 24 hours. Subsidy only helped the poor for low prices of goods. My suggestion is to subsidize mass transportation by buying mass transit buses in major towns so that people can move easily. These buses can run on CNG. Also, let Ministry of Agriculture purchase commodities from farmer's cooperatives and sell at government markets run by cooperatives. These are quick wins instead of taking us back to something that drained our finances.

I’ve noticed at good number of tricycles and some cars running on CNG across Lagos

Just that the CNG vehicles aren’t enough. The govt need to speed up the CNG implementation

It seems the President being deceived by those surrounding him, how many CNG buses running on Nigerian roads compared to PMS and diesel vehicles.

The government should try to find a durational solution that will cushion the effects of hiking transportation fares in all federating states of Nigeria.
