In a message shared on Instagram, Olabanji argued that the ability to improve Nigeria should not be judged by how long a leader remains in office. He cited the military administrations of former Head of State Yakubu Gowon and his successor, Murtala Muhammed, to support his position. “If someone can destroy a country in three years, another good man can make it better in just one year. Gowon ruled for nine years, Gen. Murtala Muhammed repaired it in just six months.” The actor then appealed to Nigerians to look beyond tribal considerations when choosing their leaders. “So if your tribe person can’t give you a better life, allow Peter Obi to give you a better country. The future of your children is very important.” Olabanji’s comments come amid growing political activity and debate ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. He specifically encouraged Nigerians to support Peter Obi, the former Anambra State governor and opposition figure. The actor’s intervention adds to the growing involvement of Nigerian entertainers in political discussions, particularly on issues of leadership, ethnicity, accountability and the country’s future. Similar support has also emerged from other Nollywood personalities. Actress Rita Edochie recently declared her backing for Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, urging Nigerians to reject vote-buying, political thuggery and the alleged manipulation of electoral mandates.
