I am glad you finally found the truth that Nigeria currently is a hopeless cause..... Nigeria in its current form exists for exploitation and nothing more....... Only the masses can liberate themselves from Nigeria by demanding for a referendum that will free them from the 1999 military constitution to dissolve Nigeria or totally decentralize Nigeria if it must continue to exist.....

savcy:
Your submission is one of the reasons why I don't bother voting in general elections. I love my country, but truth is, Nigeria will never, ever develop with the current political structure we have. Even if we elect a 'better' President tomorrow, the next one could pretty much destroy everything the past one did by a mere pronouncement the next month. See what's happening at the state level. Good governor today, and tomorrow another one pulls down or simply abandons developmental structures and policies by the immediate past due to silly political expediency.

It was Buhari's second year in office that opened my eyes to the actual problems of this country. I thought to myself, "how is it, that two Presidents (Jonathan - Buhari) of different disposition, different religious beliefs, different ethnic extraction and political parties lead the country in similar, almost identical, ways?" I pondered about it and eventually reached the 'skeleton' of the country. Suddenly, I realised that the country is sick at its core. Nigeria was designed as a colonial substitute. The spirit of the Nigerian Constitution perpetuates colonialism under a semantic facade of federalism.

The Nigerian constitution designates the country as a Federation, yet, it tells her to serve a Lord at the center. It tells states to do whatever they want, yet, it empowers Abuja to nationalize any resource that exists at scale. On top of that, it tells the states to gather in Abuja every month to pick up a paycheck whether or not they contributed anything to the economy. This entire setup is anti-development. It's rotten and it stinks.

No state in Nigeria will ever achieve second-tier development status. Look around you and assess our cities. Billions spent, yet, our cities resemble war terrains. The entire structure was never set up to develop us. If we're ever serious about placing Nigeria on the map, the first question we would ask is the constitution question.

Why can't we through a referendum determine the best way for Nigeria
Fine.

But the feudalists and their beneficiaries will tell us that REFERENDUM is not allowed in Nigeria's Constitution.

They will ask you to come to the National Assembly to table Referendum or political restructuring, knowing full well that the region of Nigeria with 20 new federating units and which benefits from the political structure shall vote against Referendum or political restructuring.

In other words, they are holding us hostage through Nigeria as one country.
But they adopted sharia crimimal justice system that is not allowed in the constitution of Nigeria.

Nigeria is a multi ethnic and multi religious country with groups not sharing common value systems.
So divide and rule to exploit is easy in Nigeria.

Qatar and UAE are Arabs, Muslims. The citizens of both countries share same value systems. They can't be easily divided and exploited by foreign powers.

Feudal Federalism: The 60-Year Lie That Has Held Nigeria Hostage
There is a lie that the elites of Nigeria have told the people for 60 years.
That if we just find better people, the system will work. If we find a more honest President, a more competent Governor, a more patriotic Minister, Nigeria will work. That is not true. A bad system will always defeat good intentions.
Did they have or do we all tell ourselves the collective lies
Bad ppl will always choose bad systems
The unworkable system we operate did not start in 1999 or 1979. It started in January 1966 when the military took power to the centre. It was then constitutionalized in 1979 when we adopted our own funny Presidential system
Funny how exactly
, and reinforced in 1999 under the current constitution. For 60 years, we have run a systemic structure that concentrates power, money and opportunity in Abuja.
True but it is our collective wish
What we operated before 1966 was not perfect.
No system is except maybe the Swiss model
But it worked. It was productive and competitive.
Meh
Debateable
Any system would've "worked" 6 years after colonialism
Regions kept 50% of what they produced and developed at their own pace.
States get 48% of the pot now so ojoro almost cancels
They policed their communities and built industrial estates because power was close to the people. That system only needed improvement. The military truncated it.
Not much stopping all this now besides lack of will
Our elites and a section of so-called intellectuals keep saying that Nigeria operates the American Presidential system. The truth is that we don't.
Actually we do
America's system was designed to prevent elite capture.
All systems do the same
It's natural law
Power resides in 50 states and thousands of cities. A Governor in Texas controls his own economy, energy, and policing. Washington can shut down and America will still work. A Mayor in New York runs his city, he controls his own police department of over 36,000 officers and runs a city budget of $126 billion, bigger than the entire Federal Government of Nigeria which is $49.38 billion and all 36 states combined which is N40.14 trillion, with over $60 billion to spare. He does not call Washington to fix a pothole or rail.
Same with Nigeria..... Ish
Our system does the opposite. It was designed for elite capture. Everything flows to Abuja. Oil money, security control, approvals. You must know someone in Abuja to live. This is unitary feudalism with a federal name, not federalism.
Then if all flows back statutorily so ojoro cancel
This is the story of most of Africa. Nations that run this centralized, winner-takes-all Presidential system have retrogressed. Cameroon has had the same President for 40 years and a civil war in its Anglophone region. Uganda has a permanent President who is accountable to no one. Zimbabwe's imperial Presidency destroyed one of Africa's most industrialized economies. The pattern is the same, rich government houses and palaces, poor citizens.
Like Singapore or South Korea?
Ppl not systems stemming outcomes
Progressive and productive countries chose differently. Switzerland and Canada run asymmetrical and loose federalism. Quebec has its own laws and immigration, 26 Swiss cantons control police, health and taxes. The UAE is a confederation where Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah run different economic models.
So does Nigeria
Not their fault that we don't make use of said powers due to indolence
Germany, Japan, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada and South Africa run parliamentary democracy where the Prime Minister answers to Parliament weekly and can be removed by his own party. No emperor. France runs a mixed parliamentary system where the Prime Minister runs the domestic economy. These systems work because no single man can hold the country hostage.
And you think its any different in Nigeria
Every time you politician can be impeached by Nass or recalled by the voters but indolence
Our own structure is why we are poor and unsafe.
Wrong
Our ppl not the structure are the problem
You cannot industrialize when a Governor cannot guarantee power, police or tax incentives.
Yeah you can
And yes they can guarantee that power police and tax incentives
But again
Indolence will not push them to
So we import everything. You cannot secure a country of 230 million with 371,000 policemen controlled by one Inspector General in Abuja. The Governor in Zamfara and the LGA Chairman in Daura know the bandits and their hideouts, but they rely on the IGP in Abuja who is controlled by the President to rid their society of bandits. You cannot create jobs when states are salary-collecting agencies waiting for FAAC. True federalism forces competition and production.
Yeah you can
But indolence
Notice how it reocurrs
For 60 years, political actors have made Nigerians believe this system can be improved with new slogans and repeated promises. It cannot.
And you think anyone believed them
70 million don't bother to vote o
Vat majority
Only minority are bamboozled
That is why, as contained in our policy papers on Parliamentary Democracy and State Police, federal police for federal crimes, state police for state crimes and community policing for communities.
And in your mind you don't think that the same bad ppeple will not hijack parliament, state police.
What is a federal crime
What is a state crime
Is murder not murder,
Is theft not theft
The Citizens Democratic Alliance is determined to end this. We will not attempt to improve an unworkable system. We will reform it entirely. Due to our multiethnic nature, we will restructure Nigeria into asymmetrical federalism as is done in multiethnic countries like Canada and Spain, where federating units with distinct histories and identities exercise different powers to keep the union productive. We will adopt a parliamentary system that reduces cost of governance, ensures daily accountability, decentralizes policing, returns economic power and resource control to federating units, and ensures no single individual or group can hold Nigeria hostage. That way Nigeria will be productive and progressive like Canada, Japan, Austria, Germany etc. Our best brains will have no need to emigrate to these countries and Nigeria will work.

Let's Work To Make Nigeria Work

As if you don't know why.
Nigeria's politicians from all religions are feeding fat from oil and gas money.

Those from the south who were yearning for political restructuring have since joined those who the political structure favours.

then let try regional government where there will be competition for each region to develop more than the others where each regions knows what their problem is and how to handle them, knows their insecurity threat and knows how to handle and if one region fails the people hold their leaders responsible and not pointing fingers @ the center government
LadyExcellency:

Ethnic linguistic groups become politicized when consensus is needed for reform, which hampers progress.

It seems that each region in Nigeria is more focused on seeing other regions fail rather than striving for its own prosperity. This creates a challenging environment, especially in a system where healthy competition should thrive.

Tonye, thanks for this article. You clearly articulated the source of Nigeria's problems.
Nigeria is designed to not make progress. It needs complete restructuring. Your group should link up with other progressive political parties to win elections, and be in a position to provide Nigeria with a new constitution that will restructure the country.
Without complete restructuring, the country will never make progress no matter who the President is.

Sorry, but if there had been no coup, Nigeria would have still been underdeveloped today.

The basis of our development has always been selling raw materials for processing abroad, and using the money for sharing, not improving our productive capacity.

That is why we are underdeveloped.

The thing is, we refuse to use our natural resources to develop industrial products for the world to use. We also have some batshit ideas like 'we don't need to pay taxes' and 'we should toolerate corruptuion so long na our guy' and 'clerical job is best job'

And if we like and divide the country, it's the same mindset.

All African countries are like that. The ones that had coup, the ones that did not have coup, the ones that did not change their constitution. The ones that are even somewhat better are productive.

Until you guys are ready to be productive, forget development, together or apart.
South Africa, Botswana, Morocco, Rwanda are productive.
Nigeria is a failed State because of the dysfunctional system we are running. To make progress, there must be complete restructuring as advocated by the writer.

The federal structure changed by northern military dictators who sewed 20 new federating units in one northern region but allowed only 17 new federating units in two southern regions to funnel oil proceeds to the northern region, as well as give the Fulani-led northern region absolute political powers, is a huge fraud.
