Lagos Receives 20 CNG Buses, Targets Cleaner and More Efficient Public Transport The Lagos State Government has received 20 additional high-capacity Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses under the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicle (EV) Buses, with the state describing the intervention as a significant boost to public transportation capacity and the transition to cleaner energy. Speaking at the handover ceremony in Lagos, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the buses would improve the daily travel experience of Lagos commuters by providing greater capacity, enhanced comfort and cleaner journeys. Osiyemi said the intervention was more than the provision of buses, describing it as an opportunity to build a “cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable transportation system.” He noted that high-capacity buses could move more commuters with fewer vehicles and potentially reduce waiting times on supported routes. The Commissioner expressed the state government's appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the initiative, saying it aligned with Lagos State's broader investment in an integrated transportation system comprising BRT, rail, waterways and other mass-transit infrastructure. He also called for continued Federal Government support through the provision of more CNG buses and the infrastructure required for their effective operation and maintenance. He urged private-sector investors to take advantage of opportunities in fleet financing, vehicle leasing, CNG infrastructure, EV charging, maintenance, technology, ticketing and fleet management. The Commissioner said the state remained committed to working with the Federal Government, operators, investors and other stakeholders to transform public transportation into a system that is both efficient and environmentally responsible. “Today, we receive buses. Tomorrow, we build a cleaner future. A cleaner Lagos is a better Lagos,” Osiyemi said. Also speaking at the event, the Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, said the handover represented another practical step towards providing Lagos residents with more efficient, affordable, reliable and sustainable public transportation. Akinajo disclosed that Lagos currently has approximately 150 CNG buses, including 36 buses allocated to operators under LAMATA's regulatory framework. She said the additional 20 buses would further strengthen bus-service capacity on the corridors where they would be deployed. According to her, the buses are not merely vehicles but additional capacity to move people, connect communities and support the economic activities of millions of Lagos residents who rely on public transportation. The LAMATA boss charged the beneficiary operators to deploy the buses efficiently and maintain them properly to ensure that commuters derive the full benefits of the intervention. She further assured Lagos residents and partners that LAMATA would continue to provide the necessary regulatory oversight to ensure that the buses contribute meaningfully to the quality, reliability and sustainability of public transportation across the metropolis. In his speech, the Chief Operations Officer, Pi-CNG&EV, Mr. Tosin Coker said Lagos “is critical to the energy transition in the public transport sector”; hence the Presidential initiative accorded importance to Lagos. He urged the beneficiary operators to ensure proper maintenance of the buses so they could serve the populace, whom they were meant to serve. Source

Ekiti State has begun moves to halve transport fares with 15 CNG buses deployed across interstate routes to ease costs. The Ekiti State Government has commenced the deployment of Compressed Natural Gas buses as part of measures to reduce transport fares by 50 per cent and ease the burden of transportation costs on residents. Governor Biodun Oyebanji announced the initiative on Thursday during the official flag-off of 15 CNG buses at the premises of the Ekiti State Transportation Agency in Ado-Ekiti. The deployment, which coincided with Nigeria’s Independence Day and the 30th anniversary of Ekiti State, is part of efforts by the state government to provide affordable and accessible public transportation in line with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Oyebanji, who was accompanied by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, said the 15 buses, donated to the state by the Federal Government, represented the pilot phase of the initiative. This is just 3 or 4 states Besides, this is just a knee jerk reaction to Atiku's promise to bring back subsidy. But does it match? The benefits of bringing back subsidy will flow even into the villages and the remotest parts of the country None of these buses will get to any village or remote areas. They are mostly for intercity and intracity transport and most cities in Nigeria average a population of 1million people. How can 30 buses here, 15 buses there cater for 1million people in the first instance And of course what happens to the rural dwellers who form majority of Nigerians? I guess they are left to continue to grapple with high fuel price This is a poorly thought idea and the implementation is even more shambolic and disjointed This govt is super clueless |

CNG based transport fare is still the same as petrol-based bus fare. Hope you know that this will lead to rise of CNG price. So the government should get prepared for "subsidy". Na so them deceive us say gas is cheap. Now na rich man dey use gas. Wo, I don go back to charcoal stove to boil beans and fry dodo. No be me una go use do cruise. |

J Kukutente23:Where in the world have you heard that the government at the center provides buses for states and local governments to operate in their domain? The FG is showing states a model. This is absolutely the responsibility of states. As for your Atiku and return of subsidy I wish you luck. When he runs it for a year and runs out of gas you and your lots eyes will clear. Foreign reserves will dry. Massive infrastructure upgrade going on will stop. States and LG will receive less. Salaries will be owed by states. Strikes will return. Nelfund will go. ASU will resume indefinite strikes. Naira will become weaker because of low reserves to defend it. Fuel scarcity and queue will return. Fuel smuggling will resume. Personally I have nothing to lose. I have a small family. I will enjoy the cheap petrol with you for one year and when everywhere come crashing I will wave you bye and read about hyper suffering in Nigeria where I am. Atiku will rule for four years and run away. He will hand over a dead economy to someone. He would have destroyed the fragile rotational presidency arrangement between the north and the south and whatever are the consequences Nigerians will face it. |
