Should this wailing not be directed to the wicked balablu bulaba clueless town hall clown in Aso Rock?

malali:
Nigeria’s energy policy needs a reality check.

While governments around the world are taking emergency measures to cushion citizens and businesses from the Iran-driven energy shock, Nigeria appears far too comfortable watching the consequences pass straight through to consumers.

More than 100 countries have introduced measures to deal with the energy crisis. Governments have cut fuel taxes, released strategic reserves, introduced price brakes, eased transport costs and provided targeted assistance to industries and households. Austria introduced a petrol-price brake. Australia released petrol and diesel from reserves. Turkey reduced fuel taxation. The G7 has now agreed to release 100 million barrels of oil and diesel to help stabilize markets.

What is Nigeria doing?

Fuel prices feed directly into transport costs, food prices, logistics, manufacturing, construction and ultimately household purchasing power.

The answer doesn't necessarily have to be a return to the old petrol subsidy system.

There are other tools:

temporary fuel-tax relief, strategic reserves, targeted transport support, emergency diesel measures for critical industries, accelerated domestic crude supply, competition enforcement, and transparent rules governing refinery and import markets.

The objective should be simple:

Protect Nigerians from an extraordinary external shock without recreating the structural problems of the old subsidy regime.

What Nigerians should not have to accept is a government standing on the sidelines while petrol and diesel prices work their way through every single corner of the economy.

There is an energy-security problem, and Nigeria needs an energy-security response.

All the painful reforms implemented by Tinubu’s economic team, Cardoso, Edun and Oyedele, risk being undermined by one major problem: uncontrolled petrol and diesel prices.

You cannot fight inflation with monetary policy while allowing energy prices to become a massive inflationary shock.

The CBN is cutting interest rates just as fuel costs threaten to push inflation higher. That makes little sense to me.

Petrol and diesel don't just affect motorists. They affect transport, food, logistics, manufacturing, electricity and virtually every business in Nigeria.

You cannot put out an inflation fire with one hand while pouring petrol on it with the other.

If energy prices are allowed to spiral, what exactly were all these painful reforms supposed to achieve?

Those that bought Dangote IPO and still want subsidy to return need brain recheck.
Hahahaha....I have been saying this for long but few saw this.

The whole IPO thing was never about the finances. It was purely socio-political. And the more I see the rampaging roadshows, the unprecedented overwhelming adverts and the desperation to bring AS MANY PEOPLE INTO DANGOTE as possible, to make it as they say, 'too big to fail'. In this case, 'too BROAD to fail'....

Nigerians are simply called in to become socio- political human shields against any government seeking to torpedo it's business plan that desperately depends on zero subsidies, on the road to total domination of the market.

And who started all this, Mr. Atiku Abubakar and his position which in gaining traction has rattled the Dangote empire.

Watch this space. This caper is getting interesting.

Can you buy Dangote shares and still insist on reintroducing subsidy aka cheaper fuel....? The debate is on.

This argument by Dangote about bad imported fuel is yet to be substantiated. His quality might be superior but that doesn't mean others do not meet the specifications. He and his supporters always cite that the regulator NMDPRA doesn't have a certified laboratory. That in itself isn't an indictment because the regulator might decide to do a multi layer strategy where it gives out samples for investigations to different independent laboratories. Isn't that a more credible way than using govt labs which are easier to compromise?

Why is President Tinubu not doing anything to checkmate this wicked monopolist called Dangote?.. for crying out loud, he is the Minister of Petroleum and should be able to take a stand on the oil and gas sector of Nigeria.

Nigerians are doing "I don't care" about this Dangote nonsense now.. You people will cry las las and by then things would have gone beyond repairs.

The wicked man from his antecedents only want to exploit Nigerians to gain wealth (where he plans to take all the wealth to is what I don't know). Look at cement, salt, flour etc. he is always looking for monopoly, to be the only one dictating prices while pushing inferior-quality products into the market.

Nigerians wake up now before it gets too late.

Nigeria is not the property of Dangote family that others would be denied access to do business in key economic sectors. Hmmn, you people will buy petrol at #3,000 per litre with the way this man is going.

I agree totally with dangote on this, after all dangote is not stopping anyone from importing but if you insist on importing, then import n subject your imported products for standard checks ,if the corrupt systems compromise itself it's not dangote's fault but don't go to dangote to buy in large bulk for blending, international treaties, agreement n deals are broken always but that hasn't cause the world to end,I wonder why the Nigerian government can't renegotiate whatever deal they made with Nigeria's crude uptakers to ensure dangote gets enough feed stock to produce n sell to Nigerians at affordable prices, just about everything is corrupted in this country.

The unpatriotic importers of petrol wasting our scarce foreign currency do not deserve to be supported at all because they have no proof that local refinery production has not been sufficient to meet local demand such as would necessitate the import of petrol! Their conduct undermines the ability of local refineries to operate profitably. Many have obtained the licence to operate refineries locally but prefer to keep importing as it is less risky to trade in petrol than to refine crude oil into petrol locally.
I think whosoever gets the license to build a refinery but fails to start building in one year should have the license revoked and reissued to serious refinery operator who is interested.

All these things are happening because there's no competition. Assuming we have about 10 different fully functional refineries in Nigeria, things of this nature wouldn't have happened.

However, I would prefer that people also have the license to import petrol to avoid experiencing the downsides of monopoly in that sector while the importers also stop interfering in Dangote policies if they can not patronize or abide by his policies.

Let it be a free market, willing buyer, willing seller.

You're wrong.. according to extant laws, Dangote petrol is the same thing as imported petrol because his refinery is located in a Free Zone, not within Nigeria's Customs territory.

The man is deceitful, dishonourable and plain wicked. If not, he knows he has no right to claim his refinery is a Nigeria project by law.

I don't agree with you,a FTZ or EPZ are just economic strategies within a country, they only enjoys tax holidays for some time, dangote is not stopping anyone from importing, it's not a must for dangote to sell to importers after all dangote is sourcing a large portion of his crude feed stock from outside Nigeria which is an irony n a big shame, dangote has done his best it's up to the Nigerian government to do the needfu,if the government fails due to corruption or plain incompetence dangote should not be blamed please.

Free Zones were originally designed for export only, reason they are regarded as not within Nigeria's custom's territory, don't pay taxes and are not subject to checks and fines by Nigerian regulations. It's people like Dangote that bastardized the whole thing after cheating the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
If you want to talk of true local refineries, you'll pick the ones outside the Free Zones that comply with Nigerian laws.

We cannot be talking about preventing the experience of the downsides of monopoly when we are at the crossroads where we must implement policies that discourage trading in petrol instead of investing in refining crude locally. While the former further damages our economy and negatively impacts our balance of trade and fritters away our foreign currency reserves the latter preserves and brings in foreign exchange as well as provide employment and adds value to our crude! The government should withdraw all the refinery licences and invite folks to bid for them afresh showing evidence of seriousness with the condition that they build the refineries within 3 years maximum. When importation becomes unprofitable they will be forced to make a choice between harming us and leaving us alone. The government has a duty to get the government refineries working to stimulate the needed competition with Dangote Refinery. The buck stops at the table of the President who is also the Petroleum Minister! It is President Tinubu's call!!! How he deals with the matter will largely define how history will judge his Presidency.

With the emergence of Dangote refinery and the position of Tinubu govt on fuel import ... Is it the marketers we should blame or we just have an irresponsible govt under Tinubu ...

A govt that believes more import license is the best way to curb monopoly, using importation as competition to local refinery ..

Just imagine what Atiku is proposing Govt switch to subsidize local crude production, lower price from locals will make Importation unviable, many will want to Merge n build there own refinery to compete
Nice. I agree that this government has been irresponsible in granting import licences to bring in petrol when it could have subsidised local crude production through the NNPCL in which it has controlling shareholding. Going that route might reduce NNPCL profit but it gives the much-needed succour to the people while we await the promised micro benefit of the macro improvement in the economy. Given the thieving and corrupt antecedents of Atiku I do not trust him to be able to do what he suggests in a manner that will not in the long run harm the country.
