PETROAN Reveals Why Fuel Discount May Not Work by ogododo(op): 9:55am On Oct 10
The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, PETROAN, has revealed why the Federal Government’s proposed fuel discount may not be implemented efficiently.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, PETROAN President Billy Gillis-Harry said the limited number of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, retail outlets could restrict the reach of the fuel discount.

This follows the Federal Government’s recent proposal to offer a 30-day fuel discount at NNPC outlets across the country.

DAILY POST recalls that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, had said the Federal Government was offering a discount on petrol sold by the NNPC for the next 30 days.

Reacting, the PETROAN president said: “Over 230 million Nigerians depend on energy to run their economy, and the number of NNPC outlets might not be enough to implement the discount efficiently.

“If we get petrol at a discount, we’ll be able to sell it to people at a lower price, which is better than having only 15 stations in a city.

“We have NNPC retail outlets that are officially our members, but we would welcome government intervention as something that could really help Nigeria as quickly as possible.”

The discount is even very dismal to begin with. They shouldn't bother. The minds of the electorates are made up on whom to vote come 2027.

5 mind-boggling revelations from Obasanjo’s ‘My Watch’

5. Tinubu was one of the most corrupt, of the 36 governors

Obasanjo never got along too well with former Lagos state governor, Bola Tinubu, and unsurprisingly, Tinubu got a mention in the former’s book.

Obasanjo revealed that then EFCC boss, Nuhu Ribadu tried to investigate almost all the state governors during his tenure but that of the 28 confirmed to be manifestly corrupt or tainted one way or the other, Tinubu’s case was one of the worst.

Nigeria: Corruption - Kalu, Tinubu Can't Escape -Ribadu

19 FEBRUARY 2007

Daily Champion (Lagos)

Lagos — ABIA State governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu and his Lagos State counterpart, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu would not escape justice but would be made to face the full wrath of the law following their recent indictment for alleged corruption by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Chairman of the commission Mallam Nuhu Ribadu who made the vow yesterday said the duo must account for their stewardship and may be thrown out of office.

I wonder how many Nigerians that will benefit from this so called discount that will be dispensed only from NNPC. NNPC have about 900 fuel stations Nationwide, out of this number, only limited numbers are functional.
Re: PETROAN Reveals Why Fuel Discount May Not Work by Originalsly: 11:23am On Oct 10
Imagine ... 15 outlets in Lagos giving a discount over 30 days.... 15. outlets i... let that sink in . Now try to imagine one outlet... can you imagine the lines? .. how long they will be? ... and how orderly and peaceful? .. can you imagine how traffic will be tied up? .. how long a normal 2 hour commute will now be? .. what are the chances of one in line actually reaching the pump? .. how long may that take? .. and if he gets there.. will there still be fuel?.. and if there is... will it be rationed?... and finally... will the discount worth the wait?

My advice is for us to start gathering rotten eggs ... we need to shell the politicians and their vehicles.. their offices .. do drive by.shellinge of their buildings ... let the aroma of the air around them match their performance At the same time we will create employment for locals ... evidence of these kind egg bombs are not easily washed away.

Apart from the thoughtless “subsidy is gone” declaration that has plunged this country into unprecedented drift, deepened insecurity, and worsened hunger, what exactly has Tinubu implemented that benefits the common man? Plenty of promises, endless suffering, and nothing to show for it!

I've not read the article, but it won't work. If you want to cap petrol price (like sensible governments are doing across the world), cap it and subsidize it across the board. The clever-by-half approach of asking NNPC to create an app for people who want to buy fuel will end up being chaotic and won't work for the majority.

Who would even trust you PETROAN? Make govt give your members discount on petrol so that you can start diverting it to neighbouring countries abi. I always say it, Nigeria cannot be better except everyone of us start the change from our household. As I'm talking now, some people are tapping electricity illegally in their homes including churches and Mosques, lecturers are sleeping with their students for marks, some are into yahoo, drug peddling, armed robbery, exam malpractices etc. These categories of people will still be among those shouting a new Nigeria is possible.

NNPC doesn't have up to 10% of retail stations in the country. The 66 Naira discount itself is just a paltry 5%. Why would I go and follow a queue of many hours because of 5%!

The man that dare? You mean the man who dared to inflict untold hardship and suffering on citizens, making food, transport, and survival unaffordable?

Is leadership now measured by how much pain you can impose on the people? We’re not discussing other candidates; we’re asking what Tinubu has delivered beyond suffering and endless promises. Leadership is not the courage to make life miserable for citizens; it’s the ability to make life better for them. That is governance

Just one answer:
We are suffering today as a result of the decisions of lily-livered leaders.
30 trillion debt through ways and means used to subsidize consumption is now part of our national debt stock. We ate our today in yesterday

We produce 1.8 million barrels of crude today but we can't give Dangote 700,000 barrels because we have forward sales in the past used to subsidize fuel. We barely have half of the production available for use today.

How many FID did we attract in the oil sector in the past 12 years? Gas production decision that ought have been realized since 1973 was abandoned but have now received final FID.

Sokoto-Badagri supper highway conceived by Shagari regime in the 80s is now becoming a reality in 2026.

Can you see the power to dare? I have the same traits.

So, the power to dare” is now the power to make Nigerians suffer and then blame the suffering on previous governments? What a spectacular rebranding of failure!

Nobody is denying that previous administrations made mistakes. But Tinubu didn’t campaign to become president of Nigeria’s past; he campaigned to govern Nigeria’s present and secure its future. You cannot promise renewed hope, impose unprecedented hardship, and then demand applause for having the courage to do so. The courage to inflict pain is not the same as the capacity to deliver progress.

Now, let’s address your crude oil argument. Your claim that forward-sale obligations from the era of fuel subsidy are why Nigeria cannot supply Dangote Refinery with 700,000 barrels per day is not the full story. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele himself acknowledged the supply shortfall, stating:

“We (Nigeria) are still not at the point where we can give Dangote Refinery 700,000 barrels of crude oil; we don’t have enough to service Dangote Refinery.”

That statement points directly to a production and supply problem. So, where is your evidence that forward sales alone explain the shortfall? You cannot turn one possible contributing factor into the entire explanation simply because it fits your political narrative.

As for the N30 trillion Ways and Means debt, let’s be honest: it was accumulated under previous administrations, and it deserves scrutiny. But it is equally on record that the Tinubu administration has continued borrowing heavily despite removing petrol subsidy. If subsidy removal was supposed to free up enormous public resources, where are the verifiable savings, where is the transparent accounting, and where is the measurable improvement in ordinary Nigerians’ lives? Where is the relief that was supposed to justify the sacrifice?

Announcing an FID is not the same as delivering the finished project, and reviving an old highway proposal is not a blank cheque for every other policy failure.

And that so called Sokoto/Badagry Superhighway you mentioned? A project conceived decades ago and being constructed today does not erase the cost of food, transport, electricity, and basic survival today.

Your final statement is perhaps the most revealing: “I have the same traits. IIf by that you mean the willingness to make people suffer and then tell them to be grateful, Nigerians certainly do not need more leaders with those traits.

Leadership is not measured by how much hardship a president can impose, how boldly he can defend it, or how eloquently his supporters can explain it away. It is measured by results.

The real question remains: after all the sacrifices Nigerians have been asked to make, are they living better today than they were before Tinubu took office?

You can celebrate the courage to dare. The rest of us are asking for the competence to deliver. Because Nigerians did not elect a president to teach them how to endure suffering; they elected one to make suffering less necessary.

This is crazy! So, I will, because of a lousy #50 differential per litre drive to like 3km extra off my regular customer-station looking for an NNPC outlet just to buy like 10 litres of fuel? Filling my tank would have made it a little considerable but even at that, #50 x 70 litres equals #3,500 saved minus the cost of running the engine for 6km to/fro! Honestly, it is not a worthwhile venture, a complete balderdash!
