One of the greatest skills a Muslim can develop is learning how to control anger. Let's be honest: people will disrespect you. Some will insult you. Some will misunderstand you. Some will speak to you in ways you never expected. Some will deliberately provoke you just to see your reaction. You cannot control how everyone treats you, but you can control how you respond. Not every insult deserves a reply. Not every argument deserves your participation. Not every provocation deserves your anger. Sometimes, the best response is silence. Sometimes, it is walking away. And sometimes, it is forgiving someone who does not even deserve an explanation from you. Allah describes the people of taqwa with these beautiful words: “Those who restrain their anger and pardon people—and Allah loves those who do good.” Qur'an 3:134 Notice the two qualities mentioned: restraining anger and pardoning people. It is one thing to feel angry; it is another thing to allow anger to control your tongue, your actions, and your relationship with others. And it is even greater to forgive when you have the power to retaliate. The Prophet once advised a man who asked him for advice: “Do not become angry.” — Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī This does not mean you will never feel anger. It means you must learn not to let anger control you. Before you reply to that insulting message, pause. Before you say those hurtful words, pause. Before you destroy a relationship over a moment of anger, pause. Ask yourself: “Will my response please Allah, or will I regret it later?” Remember, being able to defeat someone in an argument does not necessarily make you strong. Being able to control yourself when anger rises is a greater victory. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The strong person is not the one who overcomes others in wrestling; rather, the strong person is the one who controls himself when angry.” — Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim This week, practise restraint. You don't have to win every argument. You don't have to answer every insult. And you don't have to give everyone the reaction they expect from you. May Allah purify our hearts, help us control our anger, grant us the strength to forgive, and make us among those He loves. O Allah, we ask You for good character and seek refuge in You from bad character. |

Very nice piece, life demands patience. Patience is a virtue and not everyone has it. |

If it doesn't provoke you, then you can't call it a provocation. Every provocation will always make you angry but your reaction is all that matters. You don't need to react to all provocations. |
