Why Onyaiken's Suspension Of Governor Alia Is Null And Void by FSBoperator(op): 11:33pm On Oct 10
The constitution mandates that all democratically elected executive office holders from the President , VP , Governors , Deputy Governors down to Local Govt Chairmen must resign from any private profiting or paid professional roles once they are sworn into office.

Onyaiken ranting that Governor Alia has been suspended from carrying out his duties as a Catholic Reverend holds no water as the constitution of Nigeria - which remains supreme and above even the Catholic church mandates that Reverend Alia should temporarily relieve himself of being a Catholic priest and to concentrate on governing Benue state which he is now a governor.

Onyaiken can rant all he likes about Alia being suspended by the Bishop superior but the fact remains that the good Reverend - while forever still remaining an ordained priest unless excommunicated by the Pope and Pope alone - has by constitutional mandate since relieved himself from performing mass.

Note that Onyaiken's declaration of Alia being suspended by his Bishop superior only translates to the Reverend being forbidden to carry out mass.

So onyaiken can be rest assured that after the good Reverend completes his tenure , Reverend Alia will be returning back to the church to perform mass .

All those who posted above are ignorant of so many things.
The issue is a church matter which Gov. Alia is fully aware of and fully responsible to. It's not a constitutional matter.
If the issue is taken up legally, the courts cannot legislate on it.

Naturally, i would assume you aren't referring to our most distinguished and highly respected Cardinal Onaiyekan, because he obviously cannot be one of those cunning rag tag so called men of god parading themselves out there who are solely after money.

The muslim op is more concerned with what happens in the catholic church that has been in existence for 2000yrs.
Anyway after governor Alia's governorship he can choose to be a lay member of the church or become an imam if he so wish.
According to the church, his suspension stands! He can't disgrace the church in his unbridled quest for power while acting like the usual half baked APC thug like politicians.
A new Nigeria is possible!

Alia has no choice .

A governor is expected to resign and relinquish all his previous professional position and roles held before he was sworn in.

I am even sure the Rev got the bishop to suspend him from his role as a catholic priest

All what he wrote up their doesn’t even make an atom of sense.

You don’t speak on matters you do not know.

If we ask you if you know anything about the Roman Catholic Church and its workings now, you don’t. So why dabble into matters that’s not your concern?

Na wa to these 4000 influencers o. Always going off duty. Even The governor dare not call the Cardinal by name as you are doing.

Reverend Father Moses Adasu

However, here we must try to differentiate politics in general from party politics. In some countries mostly in Latin America such as Bolivia, Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico and others, priests are constitutionally barred from becoming presidents. Many priests in the United States contested for political posts in the past, something the Church frowned at due to the separation of Church and State. In the 1917 Code, it was stated that no clergy should contest for political office without the permission of his competent ordinary or superior. Finally, in the 1983 Code, the clergy were definitively barred from party politics (cf. Can 285 §3). This was an aftermath of John Paul II´s public condemnation of priests holding political offices in 1980.

Hence, the case of Fr. Moses Adasu contesting a gubernatorial post means not being in good stand with the Church. He was later reinstated. This was not the only case. In 2008 when Bishop Fernando Lugo became the president of Paraguay, he was laicised from the clerical state.

He sought the approval of the church to venture into partisan politics. However, the church withheld its approval, quoting section 287, paragraph 2 of the Canon Law, which states that the clergy are not to play an active role in partisan politics or in directing trade unions unless, in the judgment of the competent ecclesiastical authority, this is required for the defence of the rights of the church or to promote the common good.

However, Fr. Adasu insisted and ventured into partisan politics on the platform of the SDP, where he contested in the Benue State gubernatorial elections in 1991and defeated Mr. Ignatius Ayua of the National Republican Convention (NRC). He served as Governor, Benue State from 1992 to 1993.The military interrupted with the administration and Fr. Adasu returned back to the pulpit as catholic priest where he served at Adikpo and Ikyogen.

Please don’t bother reading this shii!!t.

The OP has no authority to speak on this matter. He is neither the Pope, a cardinal, a bishop, nor a spokesperson for the Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

He is just a notorious Nairaland wanderer, hopping from thread to thread, manufacturing nons.ense.

And somehow, a Nairaland mod moved this to the front page?

SMH!
