Fuel Tanker Explodes In Oluku, Edo; Many Burnt To Death by adenigga(op): 10:25pm On Oct 15
Many people are feared to have been killed, while 10 others sustained varying degrees of injuries, when a fuel tanker fell and exploded along Oluku on the Benin-Lagos road in Edo State, on Thursday.

The incident occurred at about 4 p.m. when the ill-fated petrol tanker attempting to make a U-turn near Oluku Market fell and spilled its contents on the road.

Witnesses said shortly after the tanker fell, residents and other passers-by rushed to the scene and began scooping fuel from the road and drainage channels.

One of the witnesses said people who arrived early at the scene joined in scooping, before security operatives arrived and cordoned off the area.

He said the truck’s owner later brought another tanker to evacuate the remaining content from the fallen vehicle before it exploded, leaving several victims burnt beyond recognition.

He said 10 injured victims were rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for medical attention, while corpses were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

He said, “I was also among those who were scooping the fuel. I escaped by whiskers. It was a soldier who called me and drew my attention to the fact that it was sunny and the way the people rushed to scoop the fuel might ignite fire.

“As I looked back after he spoke to me, the tanker burst into flames as people around the area scampered for safety. I thank the soldier, if not I would have been burnt by now.

“Two men who were directly under the tanker were burnt, while stores that were built on the drainage were burnt; we are yet to know the number of people that died.”

Meanwhile, our reporter who visited the UBTH, witnessed how the management swiftly mobilized emergency services treating those that were brought to the hospital.

The Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, was seen leading the emergency response team across the accident, emergency, and burns units.

The Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Preye Ezekiel Bedford, said FRSC officials, Police, Fire Service and Edo State Traffic Management Agency were on ground to control traffic.

On the casualty, Bedford said, he was still at the scene and would provide further details later.

People don't want to listen. I don't know how many times they would be told about the dangers of scooping fuel from a fallen petrol thanker. Since I became knowledgeable of this, out of all the fallen petrol thankers I have seen, only one I know that did not explode and kill people, that's the one in Onitsha, every other several fallen fuel thankers exploded and killed many.
I see people blaming hunger and hardship, In this type of incident you can't blame hunger or hardship, hardship may have played a role but in this type of thing you have to choose between hardship and death

See what the poverty and hardship Tinubu brought to this country has caused. If all these Nigerians had a better means of livelihood they won't be risking their lives to scoop fuel.
More Nigerians will continue to die this way if Tinubu is allowed even more day in office after this disastrous administration

A sad way to die.

You can't blame this on hardship or poverty.

In fact, this fuel-scooping tradition by our people goes to show the criminal mindset and self-centredness we have. It shows some of us are wicked in our hearts. We are thieves, evil people that would rather exploit the downfall of a man than to help him.

If you say poverty and hardship, na only them dey suffer for this Nigeria? There are many other suffering Nigerians (aren't we all suffering sef?) that would either walk away or do a thing or two to help with the situation. But, there's a certain percentage of Nigerians who are thieves, criminals, wicked people with evil hearts, who would rush to the scene and scoop away a man's sweat, not minding his loses.

May God help us all.

Don’t tell me it’s hardship that would make people scoop fuel from a fallen tanker. What is even wrong with some people huh Now you have offered yourself as a burnt sacrifice

Most of the trucks in Nigeria have no business been on the road

Nigerians must also stop this act of scooping fuel from falling trucks, it's high time this and mob killing should be criminalise

Security Agencies should be given the power to prosecute this set of people
Re: Fuel Tanker Explodes In Oluku, Edo; Many Burnt To Death by Hemanwel(m): 8:27am On Oct 16
This, in a way, can be attributed to the hunger, hardship, and high unemployment in the country.
Re: Fuel Tanker Explodes In Oluku, Edo; Many Burnt To Death by Heffalump(m): 8:27am On Oct 16
I blame the law enforcement agencies for not taking appropriate measures by barricading the territory of the incidence. Knowing it was an avenue of potential danger, they ought to have taken control immediately.

We have witnessed incidences like this particular one for the umpteenth times and supposed to learn a better counter actions to avoid casualties.

Now, when you blame the government of the day for this kind of incident, you will be attacked.

If past administrations which we voted out didn't deem it necessary to have road-worthy vehicles on our roads, what has this administration done to change the tide?
Re: Fuel Tanker Explodes In Oluku, Edo; Many Burnt To Death by Meedon: 8:33am On Oct 16
One thing must surely kill a man, but I will not willingly embark on this kind of stuff scooping fuel from the road.

This is really sad. Why do people keep risking their lives in such attempts?

Not that they'll learn cos if a tanker fails again in same area others will come to 'loot' too. Sad

Now e don fry dem, poverty don go now.

Re: Fuel Tanker Explodes In Oluku, Edo; Many Burnt To Death by dejolly(m): 8:39am On Oct 16
I know some of us will blame the government but truth be told this is an act of foolishness. Even if there is no hardship we Nigerians are known for cutting corners. This has been on going before now but it’s very unfortunate that we will never learn. If another tanker falls within that area today people will still go there to scoop oil. Nigerians we forget things easily and move on. May their souls rest in peace

this isn't Tinubu or poverty matter, it is all about a bunch of stubborn, greedy set of thieves who took advantage of somebody's misfortune to steal fuel and met their Waterloo.
