BREAKING: Bali Runs Out of Fuel as Supply Crisis Spreads Across 11 Indonesian Provinces

By Dialogue Square News Desk | October 17, 2026

BALI, INDONESIA — A severe fuel shortage has gripped the tourist hub of Bali and spread across at least 11 Indonesian provinces, leaving motorists stranded in hours-long queues as global energy disruptions hit Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

Since Sunday, gas stations across Bali have struggled to meet demand, with attendants increasingly turning drivers away and posting signs reading, "Sorry, no fuel available."

Widespread Disruptions Across the Archipelago

The crisis extends far beyond Bali, causing major transportation bottlenecks across the country:
* West Sumatra & Banten: Motorists in West Sumatra are facing waiting times of two to three hours at the pump, while queues for diesel have stretched roughly a kilometer along the busy Merak-Tangerang highway in Banten.
* Sold-Out Supplies: Supplies of diesel and Pertalite (Indonesia's most widely used subsidized gasoline) have completely sold out at stations across Aceh, Riau, West Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, and Yogyakarta.

The Global Catalyst: Iran Conflict Hits Imports
The domestic crunch is a direct fallout of escalating conflict in the Middle East. Since the outbreak of the Iran war, Indonesia has lost approximately 25% of its fuel import sources.

According to Indonesia's Director General of Oil and Gas, routine fuel procurement tenders are now attracting very few market participants. In response, Jakarta has been forced to bypass standard tenders and negotiate directly with nations holding surplus oil stocks—securing emergency supplies at significantly higher prices.

Emergency Rationing Ahead
As authorities scramble to stabilize the supply chain, local governments are moving toward rationing. In Bali, officials are now preparing emergency measures to restrict the sale of subsidized fuel to the top income decile in an effort to preserve dwindling reserves for essential transport and lower-income residents.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to Dialogue Square for further updates on global energy markets.
