Walk through any busy area in Nigeria and you will still smell jollof rice and pepper soup. But look at the plate, and you will see the problem. The food is smaller, and the price is higher.

Prices of everything have gone up. Fuel subsidy is gone, the naira has lost value, and transport costs a lot more. So the small food joints, the "buka" and "mama put" that workers depend on, are struggling. To survive, they are giving customers less food for more money.

Emmanuel Osarumwense, a structural technician, said N1,000 used to fill his stomach at Mama Rukayat's place. Now he pays N1,500 and still feels hungry. He drinks two sachets of water after eating just to feel full. In his words, "We are no longer eating to enjoy; we are eating so we don't collapse."

Sunday Agbonkhese, a bricklayer, said N700 used to buy ewa agoyin and bread that would fill him up. Now N700 can hardly buy a loaf of bread. To get full, he needs up to N3,000. Even then, the portion is small, so he eats only twice a day to save money. "It is only God that is feeding me," he said.

Kudirat Adeyemi has run her food canteen for over 12 years. A year ago, one scoop of rice with a piece of beef sold for N800. Today, the same food would cost her N2,000 to make. But her customers, mostly okada riders and traders, cannot pay that.

So she chose a middle path. The price is now N1,200, but the portion is almost half of what it was. The meat is smaller and the rice is no longer heaped. She also cooks far less. She now cooks about 5kg of rice, where she used to cook 25kg. "The market is hot," she said.

Musa Ibrahim, a food truck owner, said cutting portions is not greed, it is desperation. Ingredient prices change every morning. A basket of pepper that cost N25,000 last week can cost N35,000 this week. If he does not reduce the food on the plate, he will cook at a loss and have no money to buy ingredients the next day.

Economists say the problem comes from deeper money trouble in the country. A bag of rice now costs between N60,000 and N100,000. Cooking gas, tomatoes, onions and vegetable oil have also gone up. Salaries have not moved, so people have less money to spend.

Many food sellers have closed shop because they cannot afford to restock. Those still in business are cutting portions to avoid going bankrupt.

Until things improve in areas like farming and security, both sellers and buyers are stuck. For now, plates at Nigeria's roadside food stalls will likely stay small, and they remind us daily of the pressure on the nation's tables.

That is greed. Ask them and they will tell you it's the economy yet we know how much they sell these food items. I was going to ogbomoso the other day and i had yo buy food at Iyana-Ipaja Park - rice and meat 3500. Even my 6 year old child will need 3 plates to be satisfied because it was so small that i was wondering why it was so.

Is it not money they will use to buy foodstuffs do u know how much a bag of rice or beans cost? To fill up 12kg gas cylinder is now around 18k inflation is biting hard on the masses.

Cook your meal at home and save your money .
And I believe this is not about the economy of a nation.
Even in a booming economy, I am of the food of thought (no pun intended) that home cooking is cheaper than eating outside .

Re: Roadside Food Is Getting Smaller And Nigerians Are Paying More For It by Exousiang01(m): 7:09am On Oct 19
It's majorly due to greed.
The price of rice has dropped from 120k to about 55k yet they won't increase the quantity and reduce the price
.
The only scarce food ingredient right now is onion which is selling at about 9k a paint, Tomotoe and Pepper have all nose dived.

Nigerians are just greedy.

Bring down the price of Petrol to N700 now and you still see bus drivers charging the same price they charge now.

CNG busses are charges the same fare with petrol and engine busses, even the CNG busses provided by the FG oh....

Things are expensive generally so you can't expect 1k food of 3 or 4 years ago to be the same 1k food of 2026.
It's normal and expected.

You want to measure with the greed of Nigerians really?

That's far from common sense.
No country uses cooked food as metric.
They use the prices of food stuff in the market.
The prices went down the greed of Nigerians went up.

Them go chop the rice raw, transport cost reduce, cost of buying other food ingredients reduce? Gas reduce? Their shop rent reduce? I'm not making excuses for them tho but I feel many things are intertwined that's making the price of the food still high despite the reduction in price of rice.

"Areas of farming" is not the problem. Farmers are getting nothing. Transportation is the problem.

You talk as if it is only white rice that people should eat. Are the prices of onions, tomatoes, groundnut oil, palm oil, FUEL to convey the foodstuff as in transportation, coming down or going up ? While I understand the part of greed you are talking about, as a reasonable person, we ought to also factor in other metrics that are making these prices (cooked food included) skyrocket. Take rent-age for instance. That food-seller on the road may be paying rent/space allowance times 3 (triple)of what she used to pay some years ago.

Agbero may be collecting quadruple of what she used to pay, not to talk of her children’s school fees, clothing, house rent, health care etc which is arguably on the rise.

MAKE WE DEY TRY USE OUR BRAIN SOMETIMES ABEG. It is not rocket-science (No offense o ). Do you think if it was favorable to them, they will not reduce it so as to make more and gain more customers especially when we have competition everywhere? Sometimes you see like 10 to 15 different food-seller on just one under-bridge. As per Economics, shouldn’t that have brought about competition which will favour the buyer mostly ? It is actually tough out there for them. Most of them use gas to even cook this food. Is the price of gas COMING DOWN or GOING UP ? Abegi jare
