Dear Engineers in the house,

....And lovers of beautiful building designs too.

On the issue of installing parapet for structures, i see alot of parapet designs that look relatively alike and common these days.

1) What does the parapet actually do?
2) If you must install, what determines your choice of design?
3) What do you think about the two (2) samples in the attached pictures?

Kindly assist with responses.

This is an interesting question.

One small clarification smiley: the houses you attached are concrete fascia’s rather than parapet walls. We often interchange this term in Nigeria.

1. What does a parapet wall do?
A parapet is a wall that extends above the roof level, often concealing a roof, Those walls we normally have around a hidden roof

A concrete fascia, is simply a projecting roof edge like the building picture you attached. it provides a finished appearance and can help protect the wall from rain, Your roof tip/edge rest on it, it is attached to the wall and then projects some distance away from the wall. Hence causes rain water fall off away from the building wall. Generally and before before cheesy that what we all call Fascia board and those times we just use timber, but today we can aluminium, fibre cement board or concrete.

2. Must you install one?
No, it is a design choice. You can select the fascia material that suits your building, but most importantly budget and appearance is the major determinant. However most people use concrete.

I will attach our construction picture, you will notice the concrete fascia reinforcement links (stirrups) is connected directly to the roof beam. That will simply allow the concrete fascia to transfer its loads to the supporting roof beam properly.

What determines the design?
The external shapes is largely an aesthetic decision guided by your architect’s design or who is building for you. However, the structural support, construction is important

3. What do we think of the two options?

This is where BIM and 3D visualisation come in. A design that looks excellent on one building may not suit another. Visualising different options before construction helps you compare options and make informed decisions before spending a kobo.

I hope this helps.

Well-done bro.

But I would suggest you leave it the layman way, even some engineers refer to concrete fascia as parapet wall, maybe they are also dancing to the tune of the layman sha.

I'm just suggesting this so as not to cause confusion.

Behind every beautiful building are thousands of decisions nobody sees.

One of them is choosing the right supplier.
Choose someone who understands that your time is money.
A good supplier should make your work easier, not give you another problem to solve.

At CSG Limited, our goal is simple:

Supply the materials.
Deliver to site.
Keep the project moving.

No, it’s not good to leave it to the layman language. People are all here to learn and understand the right engineering names and projections.

Leaving engineering terms for layman is another reason why people feel they don’t necessarily need a professional on their buildings.

I've been tracking the recent administrative updates at the registries, and many developers are running blind.

Under the active 3rd Edition Lagos Blue Book, baseline land valuations have quietly spiked by 525%. If your legal desk computes stamp duties using old rates, the registry triggers an instant Under-Valuation Query Freeze and archives the file.
To bypass this, we digitized these coordinate schedules into a 5-tab automated mathematical calculator that pre-audits survey plans down to the exact Naira before filing. It cuts processing down to a clean 14 days by eliminating queries upfront.

If your development files are currently stuck or facing a query lock, your team needs to run a spatial coordinate deficit check immediately to see the exact gap the state is holding against you.

If you need a preliminary coordinate diagnostic check run on your survey plans, click my username/moniker to send me a private Nairaland PM (Personal Message). OR look at my signature below.

Good evening, sir.

For traditional sand-cement tile fixing, the mixing ratio depends on the type of tiles, the surface, and the application.

Generally, a 1:3 ratio (1 part cement to 3 parts sharp sand) is commonly used for conventional sand-cement bedding, especially for floor tiling. However, the sand should be properly graded, clean, and free from excessive impurities.

For wall tiling, the method depends on the wall surface and tile type. Cement-based tile adhesive is generally recommended, particularly for large-format or heavy tiles, because it offers better bonding when properly applied.

Please note that the correct method also depends on whether you are using ceramic, porcelain, or other types of tiles. Proper surface preparation is equally important for a durable finish.

Thank you, sir.
