*EKEDC IN DESPERATION* ___________ I installed an 18kW solar power system at my property in Lekki Phase 1, relegating EKEDC supply to a backup status. Since then, I have been having more frequent visits from personnel of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), coming to check my prepaid meter. On one of those visits, the EKEDC team stood watching the meter for motion to indicate consumption. When the meter wasn't moving, they called me to say they suspected I had bypassed the meter. I told them I had enough solar power for my daytime needs and only used their supply as a backup for the dark hours. To prove this to them, I switched on my inverter bypass for about 2 minutes so my consumption would be from EKEDC. They saw the meter rotating normally. They were visibly upset and one of them mumbled something like _"This ọ̀gá no wan gree us chop"_. They left. Today (19-Oct-2026), three of them came to my premises with a notice of disconnection. The last time I loaded an EKEDC token was in July 2026 and I still had ample units left. When I asked why they would disconnect me, they said the reason was "LOR" (Loss of Revenue). They said my slow consumption indicates a faulty meter and I had to pay them ₦112,606 for loss of revenue. I told them my meter was not faulty and that they could test it if they wanted. The lady said they were losing revenue and they had to make up for it. I didn't know whether to laugh or to be angry. I have no intention of paying EKEDC a dime for its loss of revenue due to my taking steps to protect my interest. But, I share this story for all who are investing in solar power to know that the DisCos are now desperate. They now have "Loss of Revenue" as a reason for your disconnection from their supply. It is simply that they are not making enough money from you. I am waiting for EKEDC to disconnect me from their grid before I lodge a formal complaint to the regulatory authority. We are in interesting times in Nigeria! The country is a crime scene…. Everyone with power to exploit knows it and takes advantage of the situation…. We were just moved to band A for about 3 months paying huge tariffs since then we have not had light up to 6hrs in a day…… sometimes .. no light for 3 days, 5 days ……..return us to band D we were b4 …. They refused |

Report them to FCCPC. Go to their site and create a profile to log your complaint correctly. They'll follow up till you get a resolution but it'll take time. I was charged 508k for LOR and EKEDC came up with additional 730k for what couldn't be explained. With FCCPC intervention, I paid the LOR though it was overcharged and I didn't have supporting documents to fight the overcharge. Upon escalation of the unexplained 730k it was found that the meter was a refurbished one brought to my flat as new in 2022. EKEDC cleared it from their end after so many back and forth. Go to their office and meet your commercial manager but remember to report to FCCPC. Old meters read slowly compared to new meters and if the meter isn't phased out or outdated, don't agree for it to be changed to the new ones. |

Going partially off-grid does not mean you won't have a bad meter that records poorly compared to what it is supposed to. Stop painting it as "because you have solar", but focus on the issue discovered; Faulty Meter. Simply pay the charges and get a new energy meter. |

This country is a crime scene. What is the meaning of loss of revenue charges. There are people that need the electricity but because they know they cannot properly meter them or try rubbish with them. The meters were all purchased and tweaked by the distribution company. Say my meter is old or does not run as quickly as they want and categorising it as faulty is a scam. By the way, why you dey open gate for Ekedc everytime? |

Where i live in abeokuta, ogun State capital, since this we have never had a 10 hours light. It feels like hell . This month October, we have not had a 2 hours long light supply. Sometimes we go a week or more without light blinking. Now imagine if people didn't have solar or generators... So if you decide to save yourself from their power supply punishment then it's "This ọ̀gá no wan gree us chop". I keep saying it, the frustration in Nigeria is deliberately engineered. |

Don;t blame the disco for doing what they did When most of their customers are not paying a cost reflective tarrif, plus a significant minority are stealing power, and it has been ongoing for years, dedicated customers like the man in the story will seek for better alternatives...because the disco is not making enough money to give them light. And when they do, and stop paying the disco, the disco is going to start doing things like the above. People abuse me for calling for cost reflective tarrif. The fact is, if everyone on the grid was paying a cost reflective tarrif, enough profit would be made and enough investment would be added to fix power, and prevent abuses like this from happening. Fujiyama:The above is the typical response I get...which shows they know they cannot win against my argument that a company needs to make a profit to operate properly. A common myth people like the chap above believe in is that apparently companies can operate well when they are not making a profit, and that government setting prices is the way to go. He also believes that the N208 bn naira that the discos made in May this year can somehow magically pay for the 328 bn naira worth of electricity they were supposed to distribute, and pay for their taxes, and so forth. Hence his above comment. Fujiyama:Note the fact that this comment shows he believes that he thinks that when experts like Professor Nnaji of Aba geometric call for a cost reflective tarrif in the power sector....he thinks they are saying..you know. It's kind of amusing to see nairalanders comment on things they do not know about. And it's nice to see him lose his cool for a change. (I'm begining to feel older than the vast majority of people on this site, even though it may not be true). Nigerians believe that a company should give efficent service at a loss. And they believe that with all their heart. That's why it's no use having a decent discussion on this site when people believe like that. |

In 10 15 years from now, NEPA will join NITEL and water board as most Nigerian households would have embraced solar and installed good solar power system to take them off NEPA grid. By that time, I foresee Nigerian government imposing solar panel installation tax on households and it will start from Lagos the tax master's state. Nigerian government and government workers love seeing Nigerians suffer and beg for their help. |

MoonWater:Don't fall for the OP's propaganda, he's being mischievous and economical with the truth. Firstly, he was issued an LOR not because he installed any solar generator. He probably refused to replace his old meter or he did a bypass and was caught. It has to be one of the two. NEPA people are corrupt no doubt, but they ain't that stupid as to deliberately target him in that manner. People wey dey always fear to lose their job? A friend of mine did something exactly like this; he was using Solar and still did bypass. He'll now be using that bypass to use electric cooker, AC and other heavy gadgets. He even advised me to do same but I refused. Around 3 months ago, NEPA hand touch am. Dude was fined around 250K for LOR. He nearly fainted. When he was narrating the story to me, I couldn't hold back my laughter. He'll be like; "na serious matter you take dey laugh so o". It's that time the laughter will now increase. You see this country, people too like awoof. How can somebody install Solar and still do bypass? The only fear of God that most Nigerians have is to begin God's name with a capital letter. |

Just ignore them, if they are serious they will sue or you sue them. The last time I checked, we run a capitalist system. They should disconnect you and reimburse you, you don't know how your story dey sweet me. They are now secondary power source. If they didn't give you power, will they pay you for loss of revenue. treesun: |
