I witnessed this scenario 5years ago, they nearly fought with the man, because of their actions the man abandoned the project of supplying his street light. They came in that day shouting that why will the man disconnect himself from Nepa and focus on solar alone

What is even crazy is how much we know this is no joke. Like some Nigerians are so demonic, they can go to any length just to scam. Instead of the workers to inform their management that People are leaving the National grids and using solar, they decided to do this. So many words to say, but.....

When we say Nigerians are the one subsidising NEPA and not the other way round they say we are stupid. We buy transformers, poles, meters, wires, repair cost and now pay for loss of revenue and yet this government kept on talking about subsidising. Who is subsidising who.

I installed an 18kW solar power system at my property in Lekki Phase 1, relegating EKEDC supply to a backup status. Since then, I have been having more frequent visits from personnel of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), coming to check my prepaid meter.

On one of those visits, the EKEDC team stood watching the meter for motion to indicate consumption. When the meter wasn't moving, they called me to say they suspected I had bypassed the meter. I told them I had enough solar power for my daytime needs and only used their supply as a backup for the dark hours. To prove this to them, I switched on my inverter bypass for about 2 minutes so my consumption would be from EKEDC. They saw the meter rotating normally. They were visibly upset and one of them mumbled something like _"This ọ̀gá no wan gree us chop"_. They left.

Today (19-Oct-2026), three of them came to my premises with a notice of disconnection. The last time I loaded an EKEDC token was in July 2026 and I still had ample units left. When I asked why they would disconnect me, they said the reason was "LOR" (Loss of Revenue). They said my slow consumption indicates a faulty meter and I had to pay them ₦112,606 for loss of revenue.

I told them my meter was not faulty and that they could test it if they wanted. The lady said they were losing revenue and they had to make up for it.

I didn't know whether to laugh or to be angry. I have no intention of paying EKEDC a dime for its loss of revenue due to my taking steps to protect my interest.

But, I share this story for all who are investing in solar power to know that the DisCos are now desperate. They now have "Loss of Revenue" as a reason for your disconnection from their supply. It is simply that they are not making enough money from you.

I am waiting for EKEDC to disconnect me from their grid before I lodge a formal complaint to the regulatory authority.

We are in interesting times in Nigeria!

This is the most arrant sort of nonsense I have read in a long time. The man told them to check his meter and prove that it's faulty. They could not. How then did you arrive at this rubbish you just wrote here?

The man should not pay a dime. Let them PROVE that the meter is faulty and even when they do, it is still their duty to replace it without charge.

They are just so pained say baba don escape their desperately poor service.

The only advice I have for him is to be recharging #2k monthly even if he still has units in his meter. This would prevent their unnecessary longer throat in his matter.

Don't fall for the OP's propaganda, he's being mischievous and economical with the truth.

Firstly, he was issued an LOR not because he installed any solar generator. He probably refused to replace his old meter or he did a bypass and was caught. It has to be one of the two.

NEPA people are corrupt no doubt, but they ain't that stupid as to deliberately target him in that manner. People wey dey always fear to lose their job?

A friend of mine did something exactly like this; he was using Solar and still did bypass. He'll now be using that bypass to use electric cooker, AC and other heavy gadgets. He even advised me to do same but I refused. Around 3 months ago, NEPA hand touch am. Dude was fined around 250K for LOR. He nearly fainted.

When he was narrating the story to me, I couldn't hold back my laughter. He'll be like; "na serious matter you take dey laugh so o". It's that time the laughter will now increase.

You see this country, people too like awoof. How can somebody install Solar and still do bypass? The only fear of God that most Nigerians have is to begin God's name with a capital letter.
If one of your relatives is caught stealing, should I automatically assume that you are also a thief simply because you are related to that person? Or should I conclude that anyone accused of theft must be guilty because someone I know was caught committing the same offence?

Your friend's experience is not evidence that the person in question committed meter bypass or electricity theft. You are taking an incident involving someone you know and using it to speculate about the circumstances of another person's case without presenting any evidence.

If he bypassed his meter or was caught engaging in electricity theft, let the relevant authorities establish that fact. But you cannot simply assume guilt and then present that assumption as the truth.

We must learn to distinguish between personal experience, speculation, and verifiable facts. The fact that something happened to your friend does not prove that the same thing happened to someone else. That is not a sound argument; it is a prejudgment of the person involved.

They are criminals. I consistently maintain over 1k units on my prepaid meter, and would normally top up from time to time.

Sometime last week, I bought units for 30k, and discovered I wasn’t credited. When I called, I was told that I was owing 120k, that there there was a time I consumed excess amount of energy.

Ok, when did I use excess energy? why didn’t you charge the excess energy consumption from my over 1k existing unit? they couldn’t explain, saying I should contact EKDC, they only gave me the information at their disposal 😧.

In 10 15 years from now, NEPA will join NITEL and water board as most Nigerian households would have embraced solar and installed good solar power system to take them off NEPA grid.

By that time, I foresee Nigerian government imposing solar panel installation tax on households and it will start from Lagos the tax master's state.

Nigerian government and government workers love seeing Nigerians suffer and beg for their help.
Flesh and blood did not reveal this to you.
Exactly the borehole situation will be NEPA's case.

Report them to FCCPC.

Go to their site and create a profile to log your complaint correctly. They'll follow up till you get a resolution but it'll take time.

I was charged 508k for LOR and EKEDC came up with additional 730k for what couldn't be explained.

With FCCPC intervention, I paid the LOR though it was overcharged and I didn't have supporting documents to fight the overcharge.

Upon escalation of the unexplained 730k it was found that the meter was a refurbished one brought to my flat as new in 2022.

EKEDC cleared it from their end after so many back and forth.

Go to their office and meet your commercial manager but remember to report to FCCPC.

Old meters read slowly compared to new meters and if the meter isn't phased out or outdated, don't agree for it to be changed to the new ones.
Do you even understand the post?

People abuse me for calling for cost reflective tarrif. The fact is, if everyone on the grid was paying a cost reflective tarrif, enough profit would be made and enough investment would be added to fix power, and prevent abuses like this from happening.

The above is the typical response I get...which shows they know they cannot win against my argument that a company needs to make a profit to operate properly.
it is much more likely that it was an internal shakedown.

Sometimes i imagine Do you even Process what you are saying this is a case of Band A not getting the services buh luckily for customers Prepaid Meter evades mitigate billing ..which is very legitimate

On your View Program ...the ladies were having this same conversation cos they are on Band A no light nd Diiscos are looking for ways to extort them for bills they did not use.

Bro you can't talk or cost Reflective and not bring service reflective into the conversation.

those that bypass should be the ones to Face sanctions or penalty, You can't even punish Taiye for kehinde sins not by any standard of the law

Give everyone prepaid meter if cost Reflective is Mandatory ... Business is fairness to both service provider and Most importantly customers hence Customers are always right

Yes because their companies are not being allowed to charge a cost reflective tarrif.

WHen that happens, abuses like bribery result.

You don't have to pay a bribe for your internet or your phone service...because the companies therein are being paid their full tarrif. Result is that they can afford to pay their workers a wage. DIscos have to lay off workers and keep their existing ones on short shrift. Result...bribery.

Once upon a time several European nations who collectively formed the Eastern bloc decided to control the prices of food, housing, clothing, and even other things. The result was all of them became inefficent and to get efficent service...you had to pay a bribe. It got so bad that getting a daily supply of bread....meant knowing a guy in the State Bread Sales Office...and paying them a bribe

Then from 1989, the wall fell, and capitalism was allowed to do its thing. Prices went up, but the corruption and bribery vanished overnight. People were now being paid for their labour...at prices they set.

Until we allow the electricity sector to run as a capitalist endeavour...where discos can set prices at the level that would enable them pay the gencos, pay TCN, pay for meters, and even pay taxes, and not have to sack workers because not enough money, we are never going to have stable power supply.
