South Africa goes to the polls in 3 weeks to elect new mayors across various cities and municipalities.

Johannesburg is the mostly contested as South Africa’s economic heartbeat and biggest migration magnate locally and from across the world.

Johannesburg’s wider urban population is estimated at approximately 6 million.

The city which is Africa's richest has been under various unstable multi-party ANC and DA-led coalitions for a decade which has led to service delivery collapse.

The current ANC coalition leadership has been unable to announce a clear candidate for the November 4 elections with major opposition parties seen as favourites to take over the City of Gold.

Helen Zille (second biggest national party) and Herman Mashaba (DA splinter group) are generally viewed as the top contenders.

1. DEMOCRATIC ALLIANCE: HELEN ZILLE (Liberal with racial bias criticism)

Helen Zille is the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Johannesburg mayoral candidate, bringing heavyweight experience as a former Cape Town mayor, former Western Cape premier and current DA federal council chairperson.

Zille is pitching herself as the experienced fix-it candidate, the gogo (granny) who says she can get Joburg working again.

Her campaign is focused on water cuts, power cuts, potholes, billing chaos, crime and collapsing infrastructure.

Helen Zille says Joburg does not need another experiment, it needs someone who has run a big city before.

Zille is seen as the favorite to win the mayoral race but through a coalition with another big party.

2. ACTION SA: HERMAN MASHABA (Anti undocumented migration)

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba is back in the Joburg mayoral race. This is not his first round in the ring. He served as Johannesburg mayor from 2016 to 2019 under the DA, later left the party, founded ActionSA, and also stood as ActionSA’s Joburg mayoral candidate in the 2021 local government elections.

Mashaba is leaning on the comeback story.

At ActionSA’s 2026 announcement in Soweto, he framed Joburg as a city “in a fight for its future” and said he was stepping back into the ring to fight corruption, incompetence, lawlessness, decline and collapse.

Mashaba is one of the few candidates who can say, I have had the job before.

When he was mayor, his brand was about clean governance, inner-city rejuvenation, law enforcement and insourcing some workers.

His 2026 message is “unfinished business” fixing Joburg, rebuilding infrastructure and restoring order.

Mashaba also has a strong stance against undocumented migration and crime.

DA can't rule without black votes and ActionSA came out of the DA.

Today the party is growing and we have an Action SA mayor in the capital city (Pretoria/Tshwane) and the city is getting praise - a city the DA coalition ran into the ground.

Nationalism is not bad if it is backed with concerted effort to improve and develop the place. As it seems, however, the current Mayor's nationalist party has nothing to offer except more of the same old. 😒😒

Its glory days are long behind it and the global crisis affecting a lot of western styled democracies are seeing the same symptoms and If you ask me illegal immigrants are being used as the scape goat for much bigger and systematic problems.

He did very well as former Joburg mayor although under a different party (Democratic Alliance). They had a fallout and removed him as mayor because of suspected racial issues and he formed ActionSA.

That's why his slogan is "Let's do it again". ActuionSA.

His party was the 3rd largest in Joburg last elections so he's got a real chance. ANC has (former #1) had imploded.
