Luxury Campaign SUVs Spark Debate as Poverty Deepens in Nigeria

A video showing luxury SUVs branded for political campaigns has sparked public debate over political spending amid growing concerns about poverty and the rising cost of living in Nigeria.

The controversy comes after a United Nations-backed report found that an additional 17.9 million Nigerians became multidimensional poor between 2021 and 2024. The comparable poverty rate increased from 33 per cent to 38.7 per cent during the period, according to the 2026 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index.

Many Nigerians continue to face difficulties paying for transportation, food, rent, and other basic necessities. In Abuja, concerns have also been raised about commuters relying on crowded pickup trucks and informal transport services.

The luxury vehicles have prompted social media users to question political parties' spending priorities and call for greater attention to essential public services, including healthcare, education, and emergency response.

However, the video alone does not establish who owns the vehicles, how much they cost, or whether public funds were used to finance them.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the debate highlights growing public interest in campaign financing, transparency, and the economic plans of political parties.

The money that enables virtually every state to pay their workers promptly , keep varsity lecturers in classes instead at home for months in as a result of strikes , that triples states' and local government monthly allocation , that is funding infrastructures , where is the government getting those? Micro-finance bank ? Propaganda . Your better options were saving money in their bank they have family shares,, invest in beer factory or the one that almost sold off all Nigeria's assets and is even now playing the bring back subsidy card .

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has defended the purchase of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) for members of the national assembly.

There have been reports that the leadership of the 10th national assembly has bought SUVs for all lawmakers.

Each SUV is said to be valued at N160 million.

The LP had asked members of the party in the national assembly to kick against “wastage”.

While responding to questions during a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the former governor of Anambra said the SUVs are not personal cars of the lawmakers, noting that they are for official use.

“Let me start with the issue of Labour Party members in the house. I have actually discussed this issue with them,” Obi said.

“Surprisingly, I can tell you I heard that these vehicles are official cars. They have to use it. It is meant for office.

“So it is not as if it is their vehicle. They said it is official cars and you are meant to use it while you are in the senate.”
