I Do Not Think That Nigerians Want Nigeria To Improve. by nairalanda1(op):
One thing I have noticed about discussions in the run up to the elections is the lack of discussion on what our leaders should do about the problems of the day. Instead there is a lot of time wasted painting the other sides black..and hypocritical

For example, one thing that gets tinubu, obi and atiku supporters riled up is by trying to discuss how to improve electricity supply. Neither one of them wants to confront the hard truth that unless the sector is deregulated, and allowed to set its prices, it is not going to improve. So, their response is basically abuse, and then calling you obidient, agbadoe, or whatever abuse comes to mind.

Second, there is the issue of borrowing. We all agree the borrowing is too much, but I cannot see any tinubu, obi or atiku supporter articulate a means of reducing borrowing other than the tired slogan of 'we should end coorruption...which is not wrong, I don't disagree with it...but because reducing borrowing means focusing on things like improving tax coverage, and taxing the rich, they abuse anyone who raises the issue.

The problem with nigerian politics, is that most people want their side in power. That is all. All those nairalanders who write long stories about how 'Nigeria needs change' or 'how tinubu is changing nigeria' do not want the kind of change that would make nigeria better...because it means their side would lose power. Easily

Like now, the only good thing tinubu has done is to remove subsides. Which was forced on him by circumstances. And for that he is going to be voted out. Just as GEJ who did a massive partial removoal of subsides...which is probably why our debt is not three times higher than it is today...got voted out for doing so. Imagine if he had done full removal of subsides.

I have no hope for nigeria improving, despite the fact that I am sure tinubu would be voted out. Nigerians only care about their daily bread, not about tomoorrow's bread. Even if tinubu wins, the same mentaility pervades his supporters and even the leadership. Nigerians need to stop looking for daily bread and start focusing on long term solutions. We need to stop using corruption as a slogan , and poverty as an excuse, and start focusing on long term solutions today.

Otherwise, we would run out of money tomorrow, and things would get really bad.

But then again, I'm not holding my breath. When a tinubu supporter praises his leader for removing subsidy, and then uses the same arguments anti-fuel subsidy removal people use against removing subsides on electricity, I'm seeing policy inconsistencies.

Also, the solutions many have for poverty, government included, amount to borrowing more to pay for welfare projects. We are merely quibbling over what is a good welfare project. Meanwhile, none of the sides has any answer to our unemployment or lack of productivity, or removing price controls over electricity...because facing the truth is too difficult for most on this site.

Bola Tinubu doesn't have the mental capacity to think rationally. He's gone already. Drugs have destroyed his brain. The Tinubu you're seeing is just a vegetable.

Nigerians vote in elections like the way they vote BBNaija candidates.

The system is designed such that the people are not reasonable enough to vote the right people. Imagine if we have a reasonable system, tinubu knows he won't have a chance, so he won't want Nigerians to be knowledgeable on how to vote.

And the exposure levels of most Nigerians to their rights, and how to vote is very low, average nigerian cares more about flashy things and how show off, so why would they wana invest in the opposite of these.

Hence, it is why a fraile Tinubu is seeking a second term. Let's not forget that should Tinubu pass away as president, the person taking over won't give two cents about you city boys and that's the end.

The answers above are typical.

Nether them nor the candidates they support have answers to the questions of the day Nigeria faces.

1. Tinubu has removed subsidy on PMS.
2. Tinubu has unified the exchange and removed corruption and subsidy from the system.
3. Tinubu has removed subsidy partially from the electricity tariff system by introducing Band A, B and C.
4. Tinubu has reformed the tax system for better efficiency in the collection system.
5. Tinubu has reformed the local government administration system. LGAS now get their allocation directly from FAAC.
6. Tinubu has reformed the policing system in Nigeria. The legal requirement to amend the constitution in order to introduce State police has now been met.
7. Tinubu has reformed tertiary education by enabling them to charge higher schools fees while introducing NELFUND loan to help indigent students meet up with the fees.
8. Tinubu has reformed the oil sector and open up multiple investments to help increase our oil production. Today, we now produce 1.8million bpd from the 1.2 that Tinubu met in 2023.
9. Tinubu has introduced the construction of mega highways to open up the entire country for easy movement of people and goods.

So, above is enough evidence to show that Bola Tinubu has a very good understanding of the challenges of the country and he's working relentlessly to fix them. Based on your writeup, the only area Tinubu has not gone all out to fully reform is full introduction of cost reflective electricity tariffs for all Nigerians. To be honest, anyone advocating for a nationwide implementation of the Band A kind of tariff at this point in time is an enemy of Nigeria or lack a good understanding of how reforms are managed.

It will be counterproductive and politically suicidal to unburden all these tough decisions on Nigerians all at the same time. The reform is gradual and ongoing and that is why Band A was introduced to urban areas first. Even though the intent and the direction of the government is clearly towards full liberalization of the energy sector, it will be suicidal not to subsidies the electricity of poor Nigerian on Band C for now.

So, we've seen the clear directions of the Tinubu administration. Now, let's exactly examine the policy alternatives that the candidates you and lots of others are supporting.

Atiku and Peter Obi
1. They both want to return sunsidy on PMS
2. Atiku intends to reverse the floating of the exchange rate system and return dollars back to Aboki in zone.
4. Both of them have opposed the Band A tarrif introduced by the Tinubu administration. They will reverse the band tarrif and move the country far away from a cost reflective tarrifs that you are advocating for.
5. Atiku is against state policing. He prefers fulani insurgents to keep killing and displacing Christian in the north central. Peter Obi has no opinion on State police.
6. Atiku intends to convert the NELFUND loan to gift. Beneficiaries will no longer be asked to pay back and the scheme will eventually die a natural death due to poor funding.
7. Both Peter Obi and Atiku want to end the construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway. However, they have said absolutely nothing a out the Lagos-Badagry highway so as not to offend northerners.

So, explain to me exactly why you're supporting the removal of Tinubu who is the only person that is trying to implement all the policies you think are necessary for the development of the country. How exactly are you different from the people you're accusing of wanting their side in power when you are doing exactly the same by supporting Peter Obi whose policy alternatives contradicts what you're proposing as the best alternatives for the country. Make it make sense please.

I had refrained from engaging you after our last conversation over fuel subsidy in which you became emotionally charged and blocked me but I see you’ve unblocked my account that’s why I can read your thread again. Let me try one last time to reason with you…. Before fuel subsidy was removed, you were one of the chief advocates of its removal making similar posts and arguments you are making now over electricity subsidy removal. I told you back then that for any policy to succeed you must consider the corrupt nature of the current government, I told you that even though you may have a point over deregulation that if those in government are corrupt and are only interested in looting, such policies won’t benefit the people as it will only destroy Nigeria’s economy but you didn’t agree with me back then. Now, what do you’ve to say over the terrible economic state of the country today since it’s removal? What do you’ve to say over the fact that Nigeria has incurred far more debts and spent far more since it’s removal? I do not engage much over discussions about Nigeria’s economy or subsidy online debates because I knew back then all that’s happening now will happen if fuel subsidy and devaluation of Naira was implemented by the government. Nigeria currently is at a hopeless stage with so many Nigerians driven into poverty daily as a direct consequence of what you and so many other people advocated for 3 years ago that Tinubu’s corrupt government implemented and squandered it’s savings….. Now you are talking about electricity subsidy removal. If electricity subsidy is removed at this time and electricity fee goes up, who will pay for it? Who will bear the consequences if not Nigerians? You know the implication this will have on productive sectors of the economy that are already at the brink of total collapse as a result of the high cost of production, you can already see the widespread hunger and low purchasing power of the people. How will Nigeria’s fragile bastardized import driven economy survive without subsidies on any strategic sectors such as energy?

IMHO, Nigeria is already a hopeless cause and a national reset is needed but @nairalanda1 you don’t expect greedy Tinubu and his corrupt greedy cruel government to kill everyone in Nigeria with these kind of draconian deregulation policies you keep advocating for before the inevitable national reset or dissolution happens….

Bro Rest ! These your obssession with Nigerians must pay high bills, subsidy negate effeciency and optimal service is fvckin preposterous

The structures on ground can't even guarantee optimal service, and you think Cost reflective is the solution haba ! Why are you so insensitive

Teigbe the minister of power said he discovered why going round the transmission units ...some Equipment still bears ECN tag, how many Nigerians met ECN

Deregulations are just policies and paper framwork, it is not going to guarantee optimal services if the current tranmission system remains default .. Do you not notice how the grid was collapsing when Former minister tried to impress with power supply

Bro business is you invest 1st than you set out to recoup your money not the other way round

You are just close minded, People must pay High thats the solution, what is the current total MW can it guarantee adequate supply even if we pay 100k per week to satisfy your obssesion

You hate Subsidy You say Subsidy negate optimal service, ...uncle Germany just took loan to subsidize electricity till 2028, you will never see that becos you are just irredeemable

Cost cost cost what about service huh

Over two month now i can't say i have enjoyed 3hrs light straight up, presently people in band A are complaining on Tv

I see someone full of mischief, if you as my friend want my advice on your loan over burden, to help you cut down i must know what you take those loans for ...it is when i understand things you use the loan for i can set up a preference table or opportunity cost

Now do you in truth know what Tinubu does with the loans, so how do we advice, You can't advice a Man taking loans to loot & share to buy structure to stop he won't
anyone not thinking like Bola ventures won't take loan like Bola very simple

He met 87tn took debt to 166.79tn in 3yrs no govt have that record, not paying subsidy no refinery o!

Stop being dishonest. I addressed every issues you raised and even more. I asked you two questions and you did not answer any. You threw some words around about corruption in the ranks and among opposition and that’s all. Let’s have an honest debate about the policies of Peter Obi that you are supporting as opposed to the policies that Bola Tinubu is implementing.

Education funding had improved significantly under the Tinubu administration with the help of NELFUND, a program the opposition candidates intends to kill. In the last three years, ASUU has not gone on strike. That should tell you the policy is working.

On electricity, the process has started with the banding policy. We are not there yet but we are on the right path.

Now, answer the questions I asked you in my initial response.

Education funding has not improved and subsidy on electricity has not been removed.

Also, the banding thing was tried in India and it failed, so why are we trying something that failed.

How can you defend subsidy removal on fuel and suddenly it becomes a problem with electricity?

Ye are proving my point, son.

So, what is Peter Obi’s policy on electricity?
What is Peter Obi’s policy on funding tertiary education?

Since we have reduced the policy discussion to just two issues, tell us why we should vote out Tinubu who is clearly moving towards a deregulated electricity market and also giving more funding autonomy to the universities that has helped returned stability to the academic calendar of our universities.

[quote author=nairalanda1 post=141012958]Cost reflective tarrifs are needed for any business to , old man.

Cost reflectice most not precedes guarantee presence of service,.

The Band A is a classical test of cost reflective, are the consumers happy .... On TvC Yourview i watched d ladies nagg on power despite being on band A,
So even with the cost reflective on Band A, optimal service has not being delivered yet,

For our population size the power structure on ground is not adequate to guarantee adequate power supply, consumers paying highly will only end up short changed like people on Band A, Discos are not even ready to meter every house

The seriousness of Cost reflective starts from the preparedness of Discos ....what are on ground, and are you ready to meter every house then we can have a cost reflective conversation

Plus, calling me an opppressor, does not make what I said, a lie.
Callin you an oppressor would have been a compliment for someone that puts C before A

I have done businesses and him business 1st you identify the quality of service you want to provide,. Is it standard or premium, if it is a premium service you must be ready to invest huge thats d truth, when you take ALL that pain of expenses you setup those coming to patronize see what you spend it influence how well they open there wallet to spend

I have mistakenly enter a barbing salon to barb planning 3k at most no big boy undecided buh when i survey the interior when they charged me 5k for low cut i paid ..i adjusted, weytin i dey do normally 1500

The level of service you meet influences greatly how much you are willing to pay for it

truth be told, the current reforms are necessary. read richest man in Babylon for more information
we need to show empathy for our future self
however, leaders must lead by example. you can not ask people to sacrifice for the future while the leaders engage in a splurging spree

seunmsg:

Well and brilliantly presented.

My only grouse with APC is that they opposed Jonathan in the same things they are implementing today. Jonathan had a better plan for subsidy removal but was opposed by the same people who started their own implementation without any back up plans.

I still insist you accept one tenth of your salary because nigerians are poor , after all.

All you said was in effect when GSM came, yet Obasanjo allowed them do cost reflective tarrif. That's why you can type this from your house.

During the period of Goodluck Jonathan, everybody was angry and saying Buhari will ease the country's affairs from bad to good.
Everybody campaigning against Jonathan for free, even his own men betrayed him.

Guess what, Buhari after all the hype got elected president. How did you all fair from 2015 to 2019?
If you are able to answer this with an open mind that should tell you a new government is not coming to change your fortunes from bad to good. They are coming to make it worse and then blame it on the previous government.

Nigerians are all the same, greedy lots looking for self enrichment. It's impossible to find someone who is different. This might seem like a lie but it's the honest truth

Bro you are a close book but what i wont let you fly is misinfornation

Telecomm from onset came in prepared to invest, the work in progress and the destination had no obscurity

i will give an example the 3G network, when 3G was about to be introduced they ensure it was a optional service to customers that can access the service and pay for it

They invested 1st in ensuring the 3G is widely spread before they extended cost reflective to "General customerbase" .. i didnt have to pay for a 3G not in amu koko at the time

the lastesr is the MTN X ... for month you saw how they went round the city installing structue & gadgets for the service, they spent heavily took there time after they were sure optimal Service is ready they announce Prices plans

if you buy the MTN X now you already know the service and amount of data you get base on your preferred plan .... Cost reflective is very valid here

if i look at the structures discos have on ground and the National grid ...as a customer why should i pay cost reflective in absence of service reflective

Telecomm earned cost reflective becos they showed workings and we could tell where they are going

No, you don't support cost reflective tarrifs, you support government price controls because you think they work.

Telecoms were bad for the first three years despite cost reflective tarrifs being paid. It was the investment and profits made as a result of cost reflective tarrifs being paid that enabled them improve services.

Here you are supporting tinubu on price controls and banding on the electric power sector, which has not worked at all....and you are fighting a losing battle by saying my argument for cost reflective tarrifs is bad because corruption. Well. ...there was corruption before back when GSM came around

Plus most of the corruption we have in the power sector is due to a lack of cost reflective tarrif. As the experience of many communist nations teaches us, when you bring in price controls, you bring in corruption as a result.

You have never paid for cables and wires for a gsm company because you and your fellow consumers have been paying cost reflective tarrifs since inception. THe power sector has not that advantage.

And Im going to block you now, because you are ignoring my points and making endless arguments over nothing.
