UKRAINE has launched kamikaze drones from weather balloons in a blitz on Moscow’s busiest airport – sparking travel chaos across the country, reports say.

Incredible images appear to show a high-altitude balloon dangling a drone, as nearly 1,000 flights are grounded nationwide.

Russian pro-war channels claim Ukraine is using kamikaze drones launched from weather balloons to in a campaign of mega-disruption to airports in Moscow causing a major headache for Vladimir Putin.

Giant queues at international Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow amid major disruption with hundreds of flights cancelled or delayed due to Ukrainian drones.

Thousands of passengers were left stranded across Russia on Saturday as Volodymyr Zelensky ramps up efforts to cripple the capital’s airspace.

Pro-Kremlin war channels have confirmed the use of a new tactic, noting: “This is the device the enemy is using to target the Russian capital in an attempt to disrupt the Moscow aviation hub.'”

The inflated objects are reportedly used to fly the drones to the target area at high altitude before they are launched to cause maximum damage.

Fuming passengers at airports across the country hit boiling point on Saturday.

Smoke was seen rising close to Moscow’s major Sheremetyevo international airport amid a Ukrainian drone swarm massively disrupting air traffic.

Footage showed massive queues inside major international airport Sheremetyevo, where a suspected balloon drone strike took place.

Ukrainian national security commentator Andriy Kovalenko said: “Russians are posting videos from Sheremetyevo airport.

“The consequences of Putin’s geopolitics are manifesting in constant transportation disruptions.

“They chose this path, and they must bear the consequences.”

Another clip shows plumes of smoke rising near the major aviation hub amid suspicions a drone had crashed in the vicinity.

Vnukovo Airport – used by Russian officials and VIP guests – suffered 119 delays and ten cancellations.

Some passengers have reportedly been waiting days for their flights as planes are held at other airports, unable to fly to Moscow.

Novosibirsk – the largest airport in Siberia – suffered around 100 disrupted aircraft.

St Petersburg’s Pulkovo reported 138 delays or cancellations.

A proportion of the chaos is as a result of regular drones launched from Ukraine.

Many passengers in Moscow complained about a lack of information from the authorities.


A woman on a Pobeda Airline flight said: “There are children on board. There is no food, only water.”

It comes as the Russian Defence Ministry claims to have downed 2,690 Ukrainian drones in the past two-and-a-half days – among the highest figure of the entire war.

Ukraine says the blame lies with Putin – who refuses to halt his war – and Russians who support him.

Echoing this sentiment, Ed Miliband blasted Putin to the face of his Russian counterpart telling him: “We all know you are the aggressor.”

Confronting Russia‘s foreign minister at a heated G20 summit, he slammed the Kremlin’s relentless bloodshed in Ukraine and warned “you are not winning this war”.
