X-factoria:
I'm hearing something new! So Igbos started Nollywood? So Hebert Ogunde of blessed memory, Baba Sala, Olu Jacobs, Joke Sylva, Sam Loco Efe, Oba Funsho Adeolu (in village headmaster) and many of those early known faces on home videos and soaps were all Igbos?

Wetin una nor go claim superiority in? Na wa o!!!
Nigerian film did not start with Living in Bondage but Nollywood as a commercial movie industry started with Living in Bondage. There a difference between the two. Not all Nigerian movies are Nollywood btw.

So how is she is getting work if tribalism is a factor? These articles never make sense how do you have an Igbo agent and get roles from Igbo directors but tribalism is a factor?

How come Omotola never makes these remarks?

Most of these producers are thinking about their bottom line and not tribe. If your name sells you will get roles.

babyosisi: I read that too
Nigerians won African cup,Yorubas drank conc acid at the name of the players instead of celebrating the victory
Tufia
Now they are downing nollywood because yoruba wood has gone nowhere
I think I have only seen one movie with the Halima in it
The way she packed herself into a tight dress out me off
If she is not getting roles insure is her acting
Is Mercy Johson Igbo?
Omotola and Ini Edo nko,at they Igbo
How come they are sought after in roles
Her acting sucks but she wants to blame iton Igos
Stupeed irl
This is why i mentioned that non-igbos actors and actresses in nollywood are doing very well and they are nollywood ambassadors likewise igbos actors and actresses. If you watch carefully you will notice that 15 yrs ago nollywood was mainly base on igbo culture and lifestyles, even then it was making waves all over the globe, some producers those days dont even use lang interpret in most movies.
Igbos have become a stigma to losers,is easy to point your problem to igbos for your wrong doing and you will easily get support from your fellow losers that suffer from igbophobia 24/7 in nigeria.

babyosisi: We are not talking about local plays in the SW that toured places
Or fly by night movies nobody saw beyond the SW let alone beyond the shores of Nigeria
We are talking about nollywood
The home movies on VHS tapes then DVD
Before living in bondage no movie had made it in the national stage in Nigeria let alone to other African countries
That is a fact
I ask again
If baba sala started nollywood how did Igbos come to control it
Can you tell us how that could have happened?

I won't allow you distort a well documented history
Rants as usual just to cover their marginalised region.Anyways, there is Africamagic yoruba, there is Africa magic hausa but ibos are excluded. You know why ? Because they venture into the movie industry for just one thing "money" and now that the world wants to know more about ibo culture, they got nothing to offer.

Well you've got to respect the yorubas and hausas for building their indigenious movie industries.ibos should be proud of their language and identity !

I won't actually say that Halima Abubakar is wrong in her assertion that indeed there's tribalism in Nollywood. Yes, there is actually but it's not so bad that people from other ethnic groups don't get roles anymore. If it was that bad then Olu Jacobs won't be swooping all the roles that ordinarily would have been meant for Pete Edochie. Have you noticed that Pete Edochie has been almost rendered redundant. We have stars such as Ini Edo, mercy Johnson, Omotola, Desmond Elliot, Ntse Etim etc making waves in Nollywood and they're not Igbos. People should not use the fact that they're not getting roles either due to ill-luck or bad acting to blame it on tribalism. There are also Igbos that have been fighting for roles but never get it, I wonder what those ones will blame it on.

How many ibos have complained about not getting roles ? Edochie's comment wasn't about tribalism but envy because he specifically bitched about Jacobs acting the role of ibo kings which he ought shouldn't be given to non-ibos.

Marginalized region when we are talking about a C list actress crying about roles? huh huh huh

Nollywood started with Igbo movies
They looked at their bottom line and started acting in English but still retained Igbo backgrounds for their trado movies
That is being smart and business savvy cool cool
If they stuck to Igbo like the Yoruba and Hausa movies, they wouldn't go beyond the SE

They have Igbo movies but the English movies made them what they are and kept them light years beyond yorubawood ones

Who is controlling nollywood where the money is?
Why is this girl crying about nollywood and roles if others are doing just as well
Ask yourself that simple question
Why doesn't she join the African magic Yoruba and Hausa people and try her luck there since they are doing better by your claims

Of course not everyone can get roles. There are very little spaces that it cannot contain everyone.

At least Olu Jacobs is getting a lot of roles and nobody is saying anything. Tomorrow, if the roles starts going to someone who's Igbo, they'll say it's tribalism. You see double standard at play here. We must learn not to always blame our misfortunes on irrelevances and instead look at where we have gone wrong. This applies to both Igbos and non-Igbos.

I posed that question earlier
Why are omotola and co household names in the same nollywood
Is it her mother or father that is Igbo?

Which Americans?
The one you know or the ones you're making up?
The only place Nollywood movies are being sold are down-trodden African stores, with Haitians and Nigerians the main customers
Lol Even Non-Nigerian Africans here groan with despair anytime I mention Nigerian films
Same old plot, same old face, very hard to understand (sometimes even for me), makes no sense
my dear wt ur saying now is not true, nollywood is making sales in USA much, that's why our actors n actress are being recognized.but what are u ppl dragging for.they're more actors n actress there that are not from ibo,ppl like ali nuhu and others,u guys shouldn't mind halima

I say shut up your dirty mouth
Who is controlling the unknown Yorubawood
Isn't it Yoruba people
Who is controlling the moribund kannywood
No be Hausa folks
So why wouldn't Igbos control what they started?
Are you mad?

Olu Jaobs,Ini Edo,Omotola,Desmond Elliot, van Vicker ,Segun Arinze and many others became household names because of Nollywood founded, financed and marketed solely by Igbos at the initial stages
This same Halima would have remained unknown but for nollywood
Who gave her a chance
The same Igbos
Will Igbos be in the minority in nollywood when they made it what it is
That is not possible
Deal with it

She should try the Yorubawood if nollywood is not working out
As simple as that
You are a fool, who told you Ibo's started nollywood.Go to memory lane and find out the first home video. If you give an Ibo man a room in a place, before a year the whole area will be flooded by them. That is why in your dream you think they started nollywood. Am very sure you will be part of people from all those idiotic villages that are messing lagos up. Very soon now you will say your grandfather own lagos, slowpoke.

Ask yourself why Africamagic Igbo was closed.Ask the old Igbo actors where home video originate from. From these answers, you will know who truly own nollywood.

babyosisi: When world renowned African film maker Sembene Ousmane, told a group of American scholars who asked him about Nollywood that ‘Nigerians had found a way to reach the African audience and that is great accomplishment’, it was considered a ground shaking, epoch making compliment. Considering that African Film makers had hitherto dismissed Nollywood as a Mickey Mouse industry, Sembene’s statement that Nollywood had found the way for the liberation of our people’s cultural, material, economic and creative sensibilities through storytelling was a victory for Nollywood. Africa through Nollywood has finally found a way of telling our own stories our own way. This is the Nollywood we celebrate today.

Nollywood’s arrival in 1992 with Kenneth Nnebue’s Living in Bondage signified a change on the Nigerian filmmaking scene. With video technology
, Nollywood brought African filmmaking from the sidelines of global filmmaking into the centre. Finally, an audience that had long yearned for a movie culture they could call their own, found a place they could call home. Withno formal structure, no government aid, no backing from financial institutions, no grants from donor agencies, and solely dependent on informal marketers who were largely importers of electronic appliances, what is today a global phenomenon took off. In merely 20 years, Nollywood has done more for this country than any other art form; it has placed our dear nation on a pedestal that has spiked interest the world over. No other African country can boast of any indigenous artistic expression that equals Nollywood. Its stars are the cynosure of all eyes at international events; they are worthy brand ambassadors for some of the biggest brands in the world; Nollywood has provided employment for and radically changed the lives of thousands of Nigerians; it is the subject of seminars, conferences, workshops and many other creative and intellectual engagements. The Federal government’s NEEDS document recognised Nollywood as far back as 2005. The recent SURE-P document did the same. As I’m sure we all know, Mr. President instituted a $200m fund for the entertainment industry on the strength and popularity of Nollywood. Many scholars and researchers have made a name simply by researching and writing about Nollywood. Documentaries have been made by many filmmakers from across the globe, all in an attempt to understand the peculiarities on what has become the most industrious indigenous filmmaking tradition out of Africa and the black Diaspora.UNESCO even named Nollywood as the 2nd largest Film industry after Hollywood and before Bollywood

My friend shutup!
You can only deceive your gullible brainless Yorubas.
Igbos owns and started nollywood 100percent.
Until 'Living in Bondage' there was nothing known as nollywood and home video, the same way until Chinua Achebe's TFA there was no African work that brought and gave Africans a sense of pride on the world stage.

Nigerian films not Nollywood started in the 60's. I know Hubert Ogunde is revered as a pioneer of Nigerian films.
However, Nollywood is a current construct that stemmed out of 'Living in Bondage' in the 90's. Igbo producers saw the wide reception of these movies and decided to use English instead of Igbo to sell to the public.
Re: Igbo People Are Killing Nollywood With Tribalism ––actress Halima Abubakar by Nobody: 2:04pm On May 30, 2013
Halima should petition her case to the AGN president who thankfully isn't Igbo, hehehe before she starts ranting that Ibinabo is Igbo.
I doubt I know anyone that holds Halima's acting to high regard.
Fresh face you say, err I don't think it's your kind of face I want to see, until you stop being razz, and dress well like a human being. For now, you are in the class of Uche Obodo and Anita Joseph. Clean up yourself, remove the ogbanje weaves, go and study your trade better.

The top girls I can watch their movies are

Genevieve
Omotola
Dakore
Bimbo Akintola
Rita Dominic

When these girls even started they all had grace, go and learn from them.

grin Babyosisi leave them alone. Had it been that Ndi Igbo did not pour their ego igwe millions of Naira into Nollywood may be they will remain at watching Baba Sala.. And that girl Halima Abubakar would not come out to cry that Ndi Igbo are tribalizing Nollywood. With the pix I saw above, I wonder how she came to be known in Nollywood, may be via beneath her lower abdomen.

Yorubas will never allow Igbos be. This constant cry of tribalism by mediocres is getting boring. If Halima is good, she will be hired for the movies. This is business. No movie sponsor would want to invest in a venture that will not be profittable? No federal character gimmicks here. I'm lost on why she has not formed her production company to make the rules as she deems fit. Countless number of actors and actresses are excelling in Nollywood. Surprisingly, she has not asked herslf why her case is different. Rather she is resorting to this pettiness.
Re: Igbo People Are Killing Nollywood With Tribalism ––actress Halima Abubakar by ACM10: 6:30pm On May 30, 2013
Rita Nzelu was one of the most recognizable faces in Nollywood in the late 90s and early 2000s. Today, no one is hiring her for movies roles. Did she cry blue murder or accuse anyone of tribalism and favouritism?

babyosisi: Don't try too hard in your bid to discredit the industry because of your hatred for Igbos
Nollywood is a multi million dollar private industry that employs thousands of people
You need to get educated of what exists in your own country if tribalism will let you
Others already know it
My hatred for ibos or your hatred for yorubas?
Which thousands of people are they employing?
Stop deluding yourself and making up stories just because of ibo's tribalistic ways of employing their own
Nollywood employs no more than hundreds or are you simply multiplying the same Nollywood actors by 4?
Unless we're counting the unpaid people in the background..... grin
Nollywood's success stops at the doorstop of Africa....their acting "skills" will never take shape in Nollywood
Don't delude yourself old woman

Ruby_Pearl: Blacks in Hollywood are still racially divided.
This sentence makes no sense, but tribalists are not known for their intelligence so I digress..

What you meant to say since you are not clever enough to make the distinction is that Black actors in Hollywood still experience racism when it comes to getting roles.

Is Omotola Korean? She is a Yoruba woman who is one of the biggest names in Nollywood, how is she making it if tribalism is a factor? Magic? Positive thinking?

If tribalism was truly killing Nollywood it would have died long time ago instead we have the emergence of directors from other background creating films with different perspectives and still under the Nollywood banner, but thanks for playing.

I've never understood why some Yoruba people have such a fit over Nollywood, you have your own industry work on that and leave the folks who like and prefer Nollywood to live in piece. Not a day goes by where I don't see a thread that compares Nollywood and Yorubawood or claims that Yoruba films are superior to Nollywood films. No one cares tongue
Re: Igbo People Are Killing Nollywood With Tribalism ––actress Halima Abubakar by Nobody:
Okay.....I see she was referring to Alaba and poundroad films. Cos the kinda Nollywood films i watch have various actors from different tribes. Even Hausas; And there's no majority or minority.

On another note.....Looking back at the time I watch crappy Nollywood, The actors then were not solely Igbos;
Ramsey Nouah - Yoruba
Omotola - Yoruba
Desmond Elliot - Yoruba
Ini Edo - Calabar etc.....

And to those shouting Kannywood and Yorubawood. Are yoruba and Hausa films not Nollywood? People amaze me! cheesy cheesy.

She's suffering from inferiority complex just like the others arguing senseless arguments on this thread! I'm out!!!!!!!!!!!! angry
