Top ISP For Gaming In Nigeria (part 1) by 9ineGames: 5:19pm On Sep 24, 2013
As a gamer in Africa, part of the major issues we face is slow internet speed (Which is also costing us a small fortune). Since the launch of 9ineGames on the 9th of September 2013, we have been searching for avenues to cushion the effects of these issues and this has lead us to do some serious research on the top ISP that can be used for gaming online within Nigeria, here are some suggestions on the top ISP’s in Nigeria that are especially good for gamers.

5. Visafone
Connection type- mifi magic-3G
Visafone falls under our top 5 connections but not a very good option for real gamers, Visafone has coverage in major parts of Nigeria but its 3G network is only available in a few parts of the country, example Lagos might have a better speed than other states. The only good thing about Visafone is its 3g and fairly good for gaming online.

4. Mobitel
Connection type - Wimax 4G
Mobitel is another powerful connection for gaming in Nigerian and runs a 4g connectivity. Mobitel in recent times use to be our top 3 best network but over the time it failed to keep up with the competition. I personally used motel once to play online and it’s more like a fair result (considering they have a little fan base, I excepted them to have a faster speed for gaming).

3. MTN Hynet
Connection type -Wimax 4g
This connection is well known and needs no further introduction in Nigeria, MTN hynet works perfectly fine with gaming online but not really as good in terms of services in some certain locations. The good thing about MTN is it works in most parts of the country unlike the previous service on the list above. Hynet is sometimes faster than Spectranet or swift in some locations and mtn has proven to be good for gaming in Nigeria and it is the best advisable option for people outside Lagos (due to the lack of swift or spectranet) in those states.

2. Spectranet Limited
Connection type - Wimax 4G
Spectranet is also an ISP company in Lagos owned by Indians with a much cheaper plan unlike swift network, with a speed limit of 512kbs, 1mbps and 2mbps but our focus will be on 2mbps which is the fastest and best for gaming, although they have their own down time which may lead to connection failure/disconnections making gaming less interesting.
They recently introduced their latest ISP technology 4G LTE(long term evolution) which is believed to be faster, effective and efficient than its previous technology (WIMAX 4G) gaming on Spectranet is a good deal based on their unlimited plan but best effective at night starting around 1am-5am

1. Swift Networks:

Connection type -Wimax 4G
Swift networks is our number one spot for gamers who want to have a good feel or experience in the online gaming world. It’s very affordable and fast with a boost of up to 2mbps (but fails to reach that peek during the day) the best time to play games are late at night (as it works really fast) the only down side about swift networks is there number of down times. Recently, swift also acquired direct on pc which gave them the full force needed to boost their services. For me personally, swift is good for online gaming but the failure to introduce unlimited plans again has made gaming really expensive for does interested in using the network

Please Don’t forget to drop Your comments!! I would love to know what you think.*(Watch Out For Updates Next Moth)

All that ya list na long thing. Visafone ke

Me and my friends play online everyday with various networks from swift to mobitel, to mtn, to unwired etc.....
And the best, hands down, is etisalat with a mifi, or a usb donlge to share from your lappy, or you create a hotspot with your phone.

Etisalat gives us the lowest ping rates (at its best), and with little or no in-game lag compared to other networks like swift.

The only downside with etisalat is that it is location dependent.

Meaning; you might not be able to get H+ or 3.5g in your area, while the other person in another area will have. But this falls true with the other ISPs as well. But if the newtwork is good in your hood, then go for etisalat. You wont regret it

So before you run out to buy all those modems, just buy etisalat sim card for N200, load 10mb data, and do a quick test in your house.

Games we are currently playing online everyday now are:

Battlefield 4 (beta)
Battlefield 3
Call of Duty Black ops 2
Fifa 13
Fifa 14
Grand Theft Auto V(five)
The Last of US

Fell free to drop your PSN id or xbox gamertag in this thread and we will add you up.

Hope to see you guys online soon.

Cheers.

PSN: RaalFy | SegFault_x0

I'm fed up with the lack of stable Internet connection. I'm a heavy online gamer and I have MTN Hynet, Globacom, Etisalat and all of them fail me. The best among all of them is Hynet, but even that is a PITA. I have Connectify 7 running on my Laptop, so I just connect to any of them and let Connectify serve the PS3. Sometimes I even wire from Hynet directly to the console, but most of the time, traffic is routed through my router. I just alternate and shake things up until I get a manageable link.

For now, I'm considering a VSAT solution and I may be going YahClick soon.

Hynet dey try but it fails a lot. All isps dey mess up from time to time, but Etisalat is the best for me.

Like I said before, it depends on your area.

Don't even try Yahclick oh, (or any vsat for that matter) for online gaming.

I have Yahclick, I'm paying for their highest home user plan, 10Mbps, the thing fast pass jet, but online gaming is a different story.

It's the worst for online gaming. I'm getting ping test results of over 1000ms, while Etisalat dey give me average of 75-100ms.

Forget about yahclick or vsat for online bros. But if na downloading or streaming movies you go enjoy am well well.

Cheers

I also don't advise using connectify. Use a mifi with your Etisalat or airtel, or connect wired direct with your hynet
Re: Top ISP For Gaming In Nigeria (part 1) by n3rve(m): 7:20pm On Oct 07, 2013
Skyo78,

Thanks for your sharing your perspective. Nonetheless, I'll get YahClick since it's stable for normal Internet use. I do a lot online besides gaming smiley

I have all: Airtel, Hynet, Etisalat, GLO. When playing BlackOps 2, I get 3 bars with GLO. I've never gone above 2 bars with Airtel, MTN 3G, MTN Hynet or Etisalat. So far, for my area (Central Abuja), MTN Hynet has proven to be the most reliable during daytime play. All others are manageable at night.

As regards Connectify, why do you advise against it? Sharing my connection using Connectify to my other devices don't seem to hurt my pings in *any* way. I have MiFi, I also have a dedicated LTE router (both not in use) as they don't have any effects on the connection. Connectify 7 Pro simplifies things because all I have to do is connect my laptop to the network I want the PS3 to use, Connectify automatically selects that and continues sharing to devices that are setup to connect using it's link. This is by far, easier than having to quit your game to change Network Settings.

I'm sure the OP's list is for people who live in Lagos. Etisalat works just fine for me in the FCT, the pings I get are fair at about 120ms.

Super fast and expensive? The prices on Swift's website looked fair enough.

the only good plan or option for gamers is 8k plan for 34GB (As a true gamer)u know that it really expensive if u can burn 15GB a day

15GB a day shocked

What kind of games do you play that require that much bandwidth? I'm certain they are not on the PS3 or Xbox 360 because they don't guzzle that kind of data. And it can't be PC games either. Everyone knows that what's important for online gaming is really network latency.

Eitherway I think Swift's LTE data plans are fairly priced. Now if only they can open up shop in Abuja. . .

I see. You are talking about downloading games and not online play. Online/multiplayer games do not consume that much data.

I pay N1,000 for 3GB on BlackBerry's BBCMonth plan from GLO. When I need to download large files, I simply subscribe to another BBCMonth plan and my data cap increases. With N3,000 I get 9GB. I share that to my PS3 using the Mobile hotspot feature and leave my phone connected to charge and the PS3 connected to my phone downloading overnight.

Just posting that in case anyone wants to preserve their Swift LTE data for gaming and download large files with a fairly decent connection.
And before you ask: No, the "BBCMonth" plan won't work on other devices. I've tried this on my iPad, iPhone and Galaxy S4 with no luck using the BlackBerry APN and others. You need a BlackBerry, in fact, it's the only reason I still have my Z10.

Looking forward to Swift launching in Abuja.
