How To Preserve Yam In The UK >:( by Nobody: 5:11pm On Oct 07, 2014
whenever I purchase a tuber of yam in the UK I notice it gets spoilt in a matter of days. I got home from the Library today envisioning a dinner made up of yam and eggs only to discover that the 8 pound yam I bought had gone bad. I almost wept because it was a meal I was looking froward to. Please for folks in the UK , any ideas on how to preserve yam. My yams barely stay for 3 days before going bad. Does it have to do with the weather or my storage Practice? Thanks Y' all

I don't reside in d UK but I'll chip in.

Make sure humidity is at optimal level.High humidity might make it retain too much water while low humidity gradually dries it up.

Make sure you store in a very airy place.#VeryImportant

Anoda factor might be the seller. The fact that it doesn't last 3days after buying suggests d "damage" might av started in d store;days b4 u buy and take home.

Thanks but how do I control humidity? your second point might actually be a good reason but how do I detect a bad yam when its exterior looks good

Not sure wat the temperature extremes really are over there.so I might not be able to say much on humidity.
Here in Naija, storing in an open, airy and well lit(natural) place works all year round.

Neva store in a dark place like a cupboard cos there isn't light and air.Imagine wat happens to fresh meat if forgotten in a car in d heat of d noon.Yoruba 'll say "o ti n se"...temperature has started the cooking process...#Translation.Thatz exactly wat heat does to yam tubers.

Abt detecting thru exterior looks-not easy.

Even the more experienced buyers still follow their instincts wen buying.
Ama give u one code tho-pinch it,if allowed.
Pinching allows u av an idea of d state of d 2nd layer. But dd tricky part is that wen yam is damaged by heat,u don't notice till u cut thru wit a knife...#3rd layer
Above all,hpe to get lucky cos there's no sure fire way to detect
Cheers smiley
