“By then, life was tortuous for the common Nigerian,” says Bose. “That time, things were not as costly as now. If you had N100, you could cook a potful of soup with a lot of meat and all that. But how would you get that N100? You couldn’t even get kerosene. It got to a time, because of the hardship, people invented a stove called Abacha stove (everyone remembers it till today). That stove, you get an empty tin and stuff it with saw dust. Then you add a little kerosene and light it. You’re ready to cook. Such was the poverty that we suffered.” |

He was a nightmare to Nigeria but God demonstrated His Ogaship on him. As worst as this present democracy is, it is still a paradise compared to dis apple lover reign then. @Op, am sure in some days now you will come out with MKO own too. 2 Likes |

I remember this so well. I was about 7-9 years old then, my siblings and I would walk for 45min to and 45mins fro, just to get the saw dusts. I dint realize life was that hard then. I thought it was fun. 3 Likes |

goodgood2: An idiot is better than you. Are you aware it was the same Northerners that formed G18 who had the liver to stand up to Abacha? The same Northerners stopped Obasanjo in his third term Ambition that would have turned Nigeria to a banana republic. Tribalism is evil. 1 Like 1 Share |

I remembered that period, Abacha really dealt with Nigerians then. The nadeco guys, the army check point all over Lagos, Abacha stove, freedom of speech thrown to the winds, the riots, the hounding down of people of northern extraction after the death of Abiola. Thank God we survived. 1 Like |

Was in JSS2 then. I remember.... I remember the newspaper headline that day. "Abacha takes over, as Shonekan resigns..." by daily times. Was a kid then so i could not understand the hatred and fear for Abacha. I drew him on virtually all my books! His looks (especially the dark goggles) inspired the dream of joining the army... Lol. Kids. |

I remember the day Abacha died vividly as the next day 9th june was my birthday. that night my parents were so happy and dancing i thought they had started celebrating my birthday earlier . My neighbours, everyone came out, drinking, singing, fireworks everywhere, the mood was so joyful and when i ltr found out they were celebrating someone's death i was very confused. Is death not supposed to be a bad thing now i know better. 2 Likes |
