Food science and Technology is (basically) the study of the Handling, processing and preservation of raw (food) materials into finished (packaged) products. It incorporates engineering, mathematics, nutrition, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Laboratory Practicals/analysis etc in the processing of foods. You'ld get to study courses like Product development, Production Management, food nutrition, fruits and vegetables, root and tubers, food engineering, Cereal Technology, Meat science, Brewery technology, Food Microbiology, Food Biotechnolgy, Fats and Oil Processing, Food Analysis, Food Plant Design, Technical writing, Industrial Chemistry, Thermodynamics, Entrepreneurship, Management, Agricultural Statistics, Sensory Evaluation, Quality Control and Quality Assurance, Food Legislation, etc....It has little or nothing to do with cooking/catering. In other news, a food scientist is involved in the making of (almost) every edible ('drinkable' or 'chewable') - Satchet water, wines, Fruit Juices, Oils, Beverages, Beer and Spirits, Pasta, Tomato Puree, the list goes on. So you find Food Scientist in places like NBC (Coke, Fanta, etc), Cadbury, Friesland Wampco (Peak Milk), A&P Foods, Deli Foods, UAC Foods, NAFDAC, SON, Sona Breweries (HiMalt), Nigerian Breweries (Star), Guiness, Beloxxi, Nestle, International Breweries, Champion Breweries, FIIRO, Okomu Oil Palm, 7UP, Chi Limited, Dangote Flourmills, Dangote Sugar, Honeywell, De United Foods/Dufil Prima/Northern Noodles (Indomie), Unilever, Ayoola Foods (Poundo Yam), and so many other notable and even cottage companies. The course is nice, the people teaching, studying and practising it are worthy of respect. A word of advice/note of warning at this juncture...if you struggle with calculations you MAY not do too well studying Food Science. |
