ASABA—ACADEMIC Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State branch, yesterday, stormed Asaba in protest against the kidnap of one of its members, Dr. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, and his younger brother, Mr. Tega Tonukari, and called on their abductors to release them unconditionally.

The protesters, who were led by Chairman of the union, Professor Abel Diakparomre, stormed Government House with over three buses and one Prado jeep, singing songs of solidarity, and carrying placards with inscriptions such as DELSU is under siege; Stop kidnapping lecturers; Bring back Dr. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, amongst others.

The protesters also went to the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, Asaba station, and the state police headquarters, lamenting that Dr. Nyerhovwo Tonukari had spent over 44 days in the kidnappers’ den.

Speaking in front of Government House, Professor Diakparomre said: “We have cried and reported the kidnap of Dr. Nyerhovwo Tonukari at different times and occasions to security agencies in the state and have also informed the state government.

“We have appealed to government ceaselessly to help secure the release of Dr. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, yet there has been no positive result.

“It is unimaginable that a lecturer could be kidnapped and held in captivity for over 40 days. This can only happen in Nigeria.

“In other parts of the world, lecturers are treated as near-sacred persons because of their contribution to the growth and development of the society. They train manpower required for the upward mobility of the society.

“When society decides to treat her lecturers as nonentities, such a society will suffer dearth of manpower and the result is certainly underdevelopment. And this is what Nigeria is certainly suffering from.”

Addressing the protesting lecturers, Special Assistant to the Governor, Mr. Toju Ayu, said government was on top of the issue, adding that Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan had always condemned the act of kidnapping.

Ayu assured that he would convey their message to the governor, adding that security agents would step up efforts at securing Tonukari freedom.
