searay:http://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/173385-akwa-ibom-local-government-workers-strike-unpaid-salaries.html http://www.dailyindependentnig.com/2014/09/nulge-shuts-akwa-ibom/ You can only successfully fool yourself but you can't fool my fellow Nigerians; Thursday, December 25, 2014 Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) on Monday began a seven-day warning strike to protest alleged government failure to attend to its demands which bothers on entitlements owed members. The decision to begin the strike, the union said, was to draw the attention of the state government to its members’ demands. In an interaction with newsmen in Uyo, the state capital, NULGE Chairman, Felix Udoh, said the union demands which government had refused to settle include leave grant, non-payment of promotion arrears, failure to promote staff due for promotion as well as wanton deduction of their salaries. According to the union leader, all efforts to draw the attention of government to settle the issues amicably through dialogue have failed and that the union has no other option than to embark on the seven-day warning strike. He said at the end of the warning strike, if government still fails to heed to their demands, the union will have no other option than to embark on an indefinite strike. Udoh, therefore, directed all NULGE members to stay at home and observe the seven days warning strike. Daily Independent gathered that some local government areas in the state are owing their workers more than three months salaries arrears. This was said to have pitched the local government chairmen against the state government, as they blamed it on illegal deduction of revenue allocated to the local governments in the name of joint account. Meanwhile, the union leader has hailed the recent judgment by the Supreme Court that state Governors do not have the right to sack elected local government officials. He said the judgment if fully obeyed will strengthen local government administration in the country. He stressed the need for the Federal Government to grant autonomy to the local government, saying it will go a long way to check the illegalities perpetrated by some state Governors through deduction of revenue allocated to local governments. |

We will continue to go round in circles in this country until we decide, if possible, forcing ourselves to do the right thing! The question is, what is the right thing? With this present structure Jonathan and Buhari can't do natin, both groups will continue to pillage the country if/when they get into power. The right thing (which might not exactly be perfect but will easily get this country to reach its potential faster than what we have now) is to decentralize the govt and go back to regional govt. The South South will be rich with the oil and can work on Tourism as their Comparative advantage for economic groth. South East are predominantly commercial people and will exploit that to the fullest. South west are service providers and enterpreneurs. The North central are known for having good agricultural base. North west and East can also start commercial exploitation of mineral resources and use their wide expanse of land for agric. These exploits are not exclusive to d region I put them. Because the Money mainly comes from oil in the ND it is believed that if we agree to this that the ND will be stupendously rich while almost all other regions will suffer and so there would be serious resistance to this, but it does not have to be so cause south south cannot drink the oil, they would need to trade with other parts and that's what will keep us one. Once we do this, things like ministry of power, education, health, works, agric etc will be the policy that each region wants to follow. There would be a national Assembly with reps from the regions and they would be maintained by their regions. These are a few of the suggestions I feel will make us even stay closer as Nigeria! |

cuteboy2:You know nothing about this topic bro; Okorocha on May 1, 2013, was commended for labour friendly policies, which they crowned with Labour 2013 Award of Excellence by the Imo workers through the Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, Imo State Chapter, Chief Dr. R.A. Anyadike for having performed more excellently above his predecessors. http://pointblanknews.com/pbn/news/governor-okorocha-receives-2013-labour-award/ And he is only owing November Salary which he promised to pay before xmas but I'm yet to hear any official news about the payment but its still preferable than some governor owing up to 12months salary and still donating over 50million naira to GEJ |

MrMcJay:2011 Elections, Buhari got 148 votes from Akwa Ibom State against GEJ's one point something million votes. These time around, the highest Buhari can get is 30 votes. Akwa Ibom will never vote for Buhari. |

Of cause election is around the corner so monies are being diverted for election, while workers and contractors suffer. This is really very unfair. |

This is just the beginning. With the decrease in oil proceeds, allocation to states will surely fall next year, leading to more of these news (since most states are literally 100% dependent on allocation for salary payment. we have an over bloated, inefficient, unnecessary and unsustainable workforce. That is the root of the matter. Turing it to an APC vs PDP will not help matters. |

codedguy1:Actually this would become the bane of a united Nigeria. This owing to the fact that even within regions even tribes, we still have classism. In a country like Nigeria discrimination still has its occurence within tribes. Say yoruba's for example we have the (ondo's, Ijebu's, Egba's e.t.c) and each group still holds doctrines the other group opposses. Still, such groups are thus composed of smaller groups, but there is as much difference between even the small groups; as Chief Obafemi Awolowo put it, as much "as there is between Germans, English, Russians and Turks". The whole idea of regionalism would actually create much more disorder and conflict than already is. Forget not it was the bane that caused our Nation's known civil war |
