meccuno:Why did Ironsi cancelled the regional system, if there was no hidden agenda of your usual "domination" -- whatever that means? Could he not have maintained the regional system while still being the head of state? Ironsi became the military head of state under the unitary system and the last time i checked, he was from.the SE of.the Niger. Yea, igbos were more in the federal civil service because others were more interested in their regional civil service. The unitary system.gives the igbos the opportunity to be posted to other parts of the country especially the north, because of their educational backwardness. That is how the igbos enjoyed the unitary system. |

superstar1:but awolowo was a very bright individual.....he was in gowons government....why did he advice the regime to revert back to the status quo......let's assume the military wasn't "bright" enough to do the needful.....obasanjo and shagari where both civilian govt who had the opportunity. Of having technocrats......why didn't they revert?? It speaks volume when you try to blame igbos for something that happened more than 40 years ago when the opportunity to revert presented itself several times.....that's not an excuse please |

meccuno:You are very funny. If the unitary system was not started, will there be a need for all those story to the gods you posted. However, who will see a system that will grant absolute power to him and will relinquish such? Why has GEJ not done same. If Ironsi did not start it, the North won't hijack the system and use it to their maximum advantage. |

eighTHREAD:I don't think so. Mr. President did not belittle other groups when he said it. He's said several nice things to several people. He once said Ogun was the most industrialized state in Nigeria. It just depends on the people he visits at that point in time. The man was just 'washing'. That's what politicians do. |

superstar1:No dodge, tell him how igbos enjoyed the unitary system. Also tell me why the igbos would work to destroy a government that was favouring the eastern region? Revisionism should be made a criminal offence |

nku5:one funny thing I observed is that most people just come and say what they can't prove.....only what has been passed down as myths to them......I just asked how the igbos as a group or region benefited from the unitary system of government, and he is talking about post?? I don't know if he was beating around the bush or beating the bush......beats me! |

meccuno:regional government had each region making use of its resources to develop itself at its own pace. While unitary system of government had all resources controlled by the center thereby slowing the growth of the regions. Aguiyi ironsi was. An ibo man that instigated the unitary system of government. If he and his tribe men that were partakers of the coup really had good intentions for the nation, they won't have abolished the regional government which saw the regions grow due to competition. It is clear that they wanted resources gotten from all the regions for themselves which was why an ibo dictator was made president, who provided a system in which the man at the elm of powers can favour his tribe, hence ibos held many political and official posts, a system the northerners also used to their own advantage. If you doubt me then tell me why you people keep complaining of how the northerners dominate almost every political sector? Ibos and aguiyi ironsi never thought power could be whisked from their them before they could even grip it. |

eighTHREAD:Lol...they wanted ALL the resources for them selves?? Haba...!! The only reason why I was glad the war was even fought is because it only showed the characters and features of the different tribes that fought in the way.....the unfortunate thing about it is that the igbos were made to pay for a sin that was unjustifiable.....after the war, both the North and the SW had the opportunity to make it right........but failed and still people blame igbos for an action they had the powers to correct........the SW and North benefited from these contraption in which 1973 indegenisation decree created millionaires from the SW and North but nobody is talking about that.....you tend to wonder when an Ijaw man talks about true federalism and some people would say its "our" oil.......but forgetting that the reason they say that was as a result of the conversion to the unitary system by the same aguiyi ironsi..... Now the SW and North dominate the civil service with the loop sided development mainly in the SW(lagos) and the North through PTF and past military leaders.....and it is not a bad thing to practice the unitary system.....the igbos are not to blame for whatever problem Nigeria has.....because they have shown that they can survive without Nigeria.....blame those who had the opportunity to make it right but were blinded by ethnicity, greed, corruption and religious sentiments........ |

superstar1:I can now see the level you know about this matter.note The first coup was coz by Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu a Niger Delter with some yoruba counterparts and the war was brought to igbos after assassinating Aguyi ironsi who rule for only 7months. name one south eastern soldier among them? |
| Re: Biafra: Was Gowon Clueless? by Nobody: 6:44am On Jan 01, 2015 |
Duru1:that is the hypocrisy bro.Gowon killed as the head of state, but they blame Ojukwu! Now, Shekau kill as a rebel, they blame Jonathan! I wonder what will happen if Jonathan kill as the head of state. Even for just declaring state of emergency against boko haram, he was accused of declaring war on the north! Nigeria is a joke! |
| Re: Biafra: Was Gowon Clueless? by Nobody: 7:24am On Jan 01, 2015 |
meccuno:you don't seem to understand. Your tribe formed a system of government that only empowered crooks, so when other tribes took mantle of leadership they found it too juicy to let go as they enriched themselves without any query, something that can't be done in a regional government. How do you expect someone to make a situation right when the system made him a dictator? Dictators rule anyhow. That act by the ibos of trying to dominate others carried out through a coup and controlling the regions. was also replicated by other tribes. If you hadn't started on that nonsense journey, others won't have followed the part. You tend to blame how huge the tree had grown but forget to blame the seed. |
| Re: Biafra: Was Gowon Clueless? by Nobody: 7:42am On Jan 01, 2015 |
noblezone:they didn't blame gowon cos he quenched the rebellion that saw many people die. They only blame ojukwu for the deaths cos he rejected food sent in by foreign aid just to use the pictures of starving babies for propaganda. And when food were sometimes brought in, he stole them for his soldiers which gave them the strength to fight the war. Or why do you think the soldiers and ojukwu all looked fresh and well fed even after the war while woman and children looked tin and kwashiorkor like? As for shekau, they'll only blame him when they have him in detention. For now, all blames go to the C-in-C who has every resources in the world to defeat this ragtag soldiers but instead makes our army who are renowned for peace keeping missions in africa look stupid. Is boko haram equipped with fighter jets, APC's(not the ones to stole from NA), men than the NA etc? No, yet we find defeating them difficult cos we have a clueless president. Gowon visited owerri during the civil war, how come GEJ hasn't visited any of those states? Yet you expect people not to blame him. Have you forgotten how hard people cried all to no avail for him to visit chibok? Did he? You expect him not to be blamed when he made a man. From his tribe a COAS. Someone like alex badeh should have been sacked since. Under his watch, soldiers are been sentenced to death cos they protested not being well equipped to fight boko haram. Is that right? What happened to our annual budget on security? You expect a government that blames. APC for everything wrong with himself not to be blamed? He says he knows the sponsors of boko haram, yet he can't make a single arrest. Pls don't feed me that talk of him not wanting to make it look like he's witch-hunting the opposition. If he has evidence, would anyone accuse him of witch-hunting? Look, don't provoke nigerians with this your funny comparison just cos you want support for a clueless government. |

Mckennedy:so CHUKWUMA nzeogwu is now a niger deltan. When we are talking of oil, niger delta becomes old eastern region which becomes an ibo region but when the talk is about disaster befalling the Eastern region, you remember that the ibos are different from them. Nzeogwu was an ibo man that carried out a coup which killed leaders of other refions except ibo leaders and enthroned another ibo man as president, at the end he was not tried for it cos the ibo man he made president handle the case with kid gloves. |

eighTHREAD:^^^You need to put down whatever it is you're smoking.....it's strong stuff! So you mean Ironsi decreed a unitary gov't to 'thief' your cocoa and groundnut when the Eastern Region at the time was keeping 50% of their own resources.....receipts from oil inclusive!? |
| Re: Biafra: Was Gowon Clueless? by meccuno: 8:14am On Jan 01, 2015 |
eighTHREAD:so if you agree that certain tribes continued what the so called "igbo domination" started, which was just a few months....why do I constantly read on NL that the igbos are the problem of Nigeria mainly from SW dudes who are obviously ignorant....since the North and SW had the opportunity to make the country right for more than 40 years.......the so called domination ended even before the war started....you guys made it look as if the igbos were the problem.....yet we haven't taken 5 steps of progress after 1960.....all we see is serious embezzlement and massive corruption by you know who......it is the failure of tribes marjorly the SW to understand igbos that has led to this unnecessary tags......and surprising the North keeps mute when the tirade is done by the SW.......I am still yet to understand the concept of benefiting from unitary system when oil was discovered in the 1950s in the old eastern region......and ojukwu in the aburi accord talked about confederal system government......which doesn't point to having a centre control govt |

meccuno:people blame the ibos cos they started a dictatorial system of government that enabled Crooks to enrich themselves. Don't tell me that you expect crooks to correct anything especially when it favours their pockets. |
| Re: Biafra: Was Gowon Clueless? by meccuno: 8:33am On Jan 01, 2015 |
eighTHREAD:who were the crooks? Talk about the igbos as if they planned it......the "igbos" formed a system of government.....that's wrong.....FYI,the same igbo dude who even led the coup was buried in full military benefits and honours in kaduna state by gowon....he never believed in biafra....actions taken by these dudes never signified that all the "igbos" decided that they agreed on it.......the first description of the coup being called an igbo coup was done by the BBC......the point I am trying to make is that you say its an igbo coup, but northern officers were with nzeogwu when he killed those people......and even in ironsi's military cabinet there were military officers from the SW and North so I wonder where u are coming from..... |

eighTHREAD:Gowon quenched a rebellion that last for almost four years. right? Bros, it was Nigerians that were dying just like Nigerians are dying now. You justify the deaths and exonerate Gowon who supervised the killings and blamed the man who was resisting the killings. Mind you, before the so called rebellion, Igbos were being slaughtered all over Nigeria, but now, you loath the deaths in the north, exonerate Shekau the murder and blame Jonathan who is resiting the killings. So you have not heard that Nigerian soldiers are betraying their colleagues, sabotaging their efforts? Get your facts right, the mutiny was against the commanders who deliberately ill equip their troupes and then deliberately lead them to Boko Haram ambushes. When Mr President declared state of emergency, what did Northerner leaders like Buhari say? Were they not opposing and tackling hi at every angle? Let the game continue, but you guys must know that what turns are around will eventually turn around. The circle of blood had been to the South East, it had touched the South South and is now visiting the North. Who knows where next? Shame on all hypocrites. |

| Re: Biafra: Was Gowon Clueless? by Nobody: 9:34am On Jan 01, 2015 |
aurenflani:Not exactly, notable northern leaders like Buhari has been o tackles and condemnations of every of his move without making any positive contribution. Commanders are betraying their troupes, ill equipping them and sending them to ambushes of Boko Haram. On declaration of state of emergency, notable northern leaders declared, "You have declared war against the north" Social miscreants like Amechi and his NGF, opposed it. APC leaders like Tinubu and Lai also opposed it. When he muted dialogue and amnesty for Boko Haram, they asked for his head! How would it had it been, if a cross section of Nigerians opposed Gowon over declaration of war against Biafra. How would it had been if Nigerian commanders were betraying their troupes into Biafran ambushes? What of if Gowon was accused of being the brains behind Biafra? It is all hypocrisy. |
