ElekeNtioba:
I'm of the opinion that the Ikwerre ARE NOT Igbos.

Of course, i dont have any physical or material evidence to point to.

But looking at the history of relations between them and considering how agressive Igbo expansion is, its safe to say dat d ikwerre were originally a non-Igbo speaking tribe assimilated through trade, interaction and inter-marriage.

Secondly, d nature of the Ikwerre is distinct from Igbos. They lack moral fibre, are spineless, and downright lazy. Which explains why the Igbos assimilated them with ease leaving no record whatsoever of their original language.

The reason why they chose to separate themselves is because they are still bitter over the loss of their original identity. Deep down they know they are nothing like Igbos and so are afraid of Igbo domination.
These insults are really unnecessary. You can make your point without stooping this low. I know several Ikwerre that admit to being Igbo. What do you think they'll say when they see your post?

THE IGBO ARE THE ONLY TRIBE SOME COMPANIES EMPLOY HERE IN EUROPE BECAUSE THEY WORK HARD AND MAKES MORE PROFIT FOR BOTH COMPANY AND THEMSELVES, WE LOVE THEM HERE,AND OUR GIRLS AND WOMEN EVEN NOW PREFER IGBOS THAN US AS THEY SAY IGBOS ARE ALSO BEST IN SATISFYING THEM,GOD BLESSED THE IGBOS IN ALL WAYS ROUND.

You made some valid points- Igbos are predominantly found in south-eastern part of Nigeria...but then, there are Igbos in: Rivers State (Ikwere, forget all those political noise, claims and counter-claims...check their names and language and u will know their origin), Akwa Ibom, Delta (Agbor, Asaba, Ibuzor, Ogwashi Ukwu, etc), Bayelsa (very minute), Benue (very minute).

Meanwhile, the opinion of one nairaland user who maybe a teenager or a city-lost cannot decide the origin of Ikwere people.

When Igbos claim they have orgin traces from Israel, people doubt and call them names, whyhuh I keep wondering y the much hatred and attack on Igbo tribe even though Igbo people hardly start fight or war against any tribe.

I think the answer can be found in: SUCCESS- everyone beefs a successful person!

The fate of Igbos is similar to the fate of Jewish people in the world; at a point, Germans, French were so against Jewish people before 1940s because Jewish people were so intelligent, smart, successful more than real Germans such that Adolf Hitler as soon as he became German Chancellor (Reich), commanded Sir Albert Einstein the great scientist to stop teaching Jewish Physics and teach Germans more of German Physics out of envy which led to the mass killing of Jews all over the world until Jewish people got their freedom in 1952 and see how successful and powerful they are today.

I strongly believe that one day, Igbo people will arise and shine above their haters like Jewish people did!

They got married 2007 but the guy didn't take her home even after 4 kids,my sis should av suspected that there must be something wrong with his family..but she was thinking maybe he is "akudaya"..so she pestered him to take her home..when they got to the place she was welcomed grandly..they had a great feast for her and her kids..then they gave her money to go and buy something from the market, when she got there she started pricing things she wanted to buy..as an ijebu woman she can price ehn,she got to a place and just spoke her language she said (urun ma won bewe)things are costly here oo ..dat was when an ijebu lady dat came to sell things there asked her what she was doing there dat there is a mark on her and the mark is given to any lady they want 2 kill. she explained everything to her and the lady helped her escape...she got a divorce when the guy came back with just 2kids

This is to tell u how nigerians and oda parts of the world hate the igbos.
You pple are nt good pple and u know it.

Take Note: der are no igbos in rivers state if u dnt know.

I am an ikwerre man. In rivers state the ogbas, ekpeye and etche u call igbos are nt igbos.

Ikwerre people organisation (also know as Ogbakor ikwerre) was established before "igbo people organisation" (Also known as Ohaeze Ndi"igbo) if you dnt know.

If ikwerres were igbos anwers dese few questns.
1. Why did the ikwerres refuse to giv u igbos ur property wen u pple returned bak to port harcourt after d biafra war.
2. Why was Ikwerre people organisation (ogbakor ikwerre) established b4 igbo peoples organisation?
3. If ikwerre was igbos why is our tradittion diff frm d igbo tradition?
4. In ikwerre we call the igbos "osoma" meaning Labourers, why so, igbos ans dis.
5. If ikwerres are igbo we do sum ikwerre dnt sell land nd dnt get married to the igbos.

Mr writter u ar stupid for rewriting my history, and God will purnish u 4 dat.

We ikwerre hv neva nd cn neva b igbo.

Port harcourt is Ikwerre land and not IGBO. Read d full history of ikwerre here: http://iwhnurohna..com/2012/11/a-brief-history-of-ikwerre.html
1) How does number one in anyway relate to the question of relatedness between Igbos and Ikwerres? It's a good thing you accepted the property were the Igbos' but the Ikwerres refused to return them back. Same happened in the northern part of Nigeria. This question you asked is worthless.

2) You think Igbo unity started with Ohaneze Ndigbo? For your information, Igbo unions were formed in as early as 1934 in the same Port-Harcourt which served as one of the early founding towns of Igboland. Ogbakor Ikwerre was only formed as recently as in May 1963, some 30 years after Igbo Union was formed in both Lagos and Port-harcourt. Preceding the formation of Igbo union in PH/Lagos, Igbo Union was formed in Sierra Leone by ex-Igbo slaves as early as in the 1800s! Igbo union Nigeria way precedes Ogbakpr Ikwerre, which was formed in a breakaway attempt from the greater Igbo ethnicity. Ohaneze Ndigbo is only a recent umbrella body formation by the Igbos.
3. Igbo Federal Union
In the thirties, Igbo Unions were formed in the urban townships of Lagos and Port Harcourt. The Lagos Igbo Union was formed in 1934 to unite all town, clan and district unions in Lagos into one national body. According to c. De Aguomba, The history of the pan-Igbo organization goes back to the early 193o’s when some Igbo in Lagos formed the Lagos Igbo Union in order to organize a reception for Dr Akanu Ibiam, the second Igbo medical doctor who had returned from Britain where he had qualified. The Union brought together several towns, clans and divisional organizations and became a voice for Igbo and its objectives were mainly for the welfare of the Igbo in Lagos.

The first actual Pan-Igbo organization uniting these various town, clan and divisional or district unions in various cities in Nigeria was Igbo Federal Union, whose formation was spearheaded by the Igbo Union, Lagos, in 1943. The weakness of the Igbo Federal Union was due to the fact that it was merely an association of town, clan and divisional unions in cities. Its influence was therefore limited; as it was unable to mobilize people in towns, clans or divisions in Igboland.

4. Igbo State Union

In December 1948, a pan-Igbo Conference was held at Port Harcourt attended by Igbo Unions in the various cities in Nigeria, including representations of home-based unions in Igboland. The aim was “to organize the Ibo linguistic group into a political unit in accordance with the NCNC Freedom Charter” The Conference led to the formation of a new association, the Ibo State Union. Its membership was open to the clans and towns of Ibo-land as well as those in various non-Igbo cities throughout Nigeria. This development was also influenced by the dynamics of the anti-colonial struggle and the early signals of the nature of political struggle in a multi-ethnic society.

According to c. De Aguomba, The founders of the new union had anticipated that Nigeria would be re-arranged into states based on cultural and linguistic affinity, and Igbo State would be a member of the Commonwealth of Nigeria… This certainly was the idea Nnamdi Azikiwe advocated in his book, Political Blueprint for Nigeria published in 1943.

Second, in all efforts by the minorities in the former Eastern Region to agitate for their own political, social and economic recognition and liberty in the Easter Region and Nigeria at large, Ikwerre participated fully: hence, the late Chief E. J. A. Oriji and others represented Ikwerre before and during most of the conferences set up to address the fears of the minority ethnic groups in Nigeria. Third, in May 1963, Ikwerre people formed the Ogbakor Ikwerre Convention to state that Ikwerre is a distinct ethnic group from any others in Nigeria.
http://www.gamji.com/article9000/NEWS9062.htm
3) List those so-called traditions that make the Ikwerre different from Igbos?

4) 'Osoma'/'Isuoma' is also used by the Ohaji, Oratta, e.t.c of Imo state to refer to other Igbos living around them. It isn't peculiar to the Ikwerre sub-group. Igbo groups have always referred to those living around them by a particular name. FYI, Igbos of the hinterland refer to Igbo-speaking and non-Igbo speaking people alike living close to the sea line as 'ndi mba mili' (people living close to the sea).

5) The refusal to sell land is a personal choice by certain natives of an area. The nsukka people of Enugu hardly sell their land to outsiders (these outsiders which include Igbos from Enugu state). This is in no way unique to the Ikwerre. The non-sale of land to Igbos by certain Ikwerre families is borne out of the unnecessary fear of the Igbo man's ambition which they term 'aggressive.

i really dont give two phucks as to d opinion of anybody. My post is actually intended for the Igbos who want to cozy up to the ikwerre when there's notin remotely fantastic abt dem. Maybe I went too far, maybe not.

Let them go their separate way if they wish. You cant force anyone to chose his identity.

I admit there are always exception to every rule. So NOT ALL ikwerre are like i said they are. I have relatives married to ikwerre. Infact my favorite in-law is an ikwerre man.

So any ikwerre who wishes to identify as Igbo is gladly welcomed to the fold.

We igbos we are great people. I'm glad a topic like this is posted. My main concern is that our generation now, we don't see this igbo language as our heritage. Its a thing of pride when you travel and you speak igbo language and you look like a village man/woman. In some cases you'll travel and our fellow igbos betrays us. I have a case like that when I traveled to benin republic, on getting to the border, where passports was a means to passage, I met a so called igbo man, who because of his language I felt safe with him. I promised him a handsome amount if he'll cross me over he agreed only for him to dupe me of all my valuables including my phone. We are not UNITED. Also I want to encourage our parents to make sure their children speak their native language.

some years ago in the arakale area of akure ondo state, indigenes refuse to lease or rent out their shop or house to igbo traders because when they do, the igbo will aproach, convince and bribe a prodigal member of that family to sell off the property to him without the knowledge of the true owner, this caused some rife, and most yoruba believe that igbo traders do human ritual just to make money or get customers, lagosians think igbos are covetous citing the case of festac where igbos claim they are majority and so its theirs... you quoted the whole text just to write interesting, you really need to see tb Joshua

Back to the mata, why do u guys (ibos) always claim whats not yours. The ikwerres have always said the are not part of u even from the time of our fore fathers and you guys keep insisting, are you guys claiming the people as yours or the reproductive nature of their habitats (land, oil etc) cos all my life I've known ibos to be greedy.now come to think of this, the edos have similarities in culture to the yorubas but I've not seen them laying claim to the edos.for crying out loud we are all nigerians and there will be similarities in culture but that does not make me one of ur tribe
Trust me, i have never seen anything like this in my life, People forcing themselves on other people just to measure up to others in terms of population, landmass, Oil and other natural resources I presumed.

It's just pathetic!!!! And saddening to this small neighbouring tribes (Ikwerres and d rest) being forced into what they don't want...............

Igbo Nation is big, enterprising, cultural and above all richer(In terms of other natural resources) than all these smaller tribes around them, appreciate what you have got as Nation and let these smaller tribes be and be proud of their histories.

If you force people on yourself, the day of trouble, you would have enemies within and that would definitely lead to your downfall quickly............ Advice from Wise man.

We are neighbours for God sake and our cultural values ll always and continue to look similar and that shouldn't make bigger tribe to lay claim or subjugate the smaller ones.........

There are millions of Yorubas living in Benin Republic who always in Lagos and every other South West state for all sort of Yoruba traditional festivities but Yoruba as nation as no right to lay claim on them unless these people demand for their recognition by Yoruba nation...

There are millions of Yorubas such as: Edo-Akoko, Akoko-Edo in Edo state, Okun people are 20% of Kogi state population, Kwara state, even as far as Delta but Yoruba nation gives that freedom to them to ask for their recognitions.

My point is that Igbos should allow these people to ask for their recognitions.....

Peace Out

Are you paying attention to him/her? Okolo (male in Igbo) and Onochie (representative/replacement) are core Igbo names. Attama is an Igala word for 'high priest'. Attama is not an Igbo name and I am yet to meet an Igbo person with such a name. There are a few Igalas in Anambra state, around the border with Kogi state and any Anambrarian with such a name is definitely from that area.
