I've always wondered about this phenomenon; A deaf and dumb getting 'mad' at you when you put a leaf across your mouth. Many years back as a young boy, I was made to believe that 'myth" Though I put it off as a myth or superstition but my curious mind wouldn't let go. So one day, I decided to experiment. Shebi, experience is the best teacher. There was this lanky boy called Segun in our neighbourhood. He was notorious for his love for girls. He wears a frown always except when a lady comes to sight. We were good friends cos I dash him sweets whenever he comes around. I stood in front of my momma's shop that afternoon. Momma was fast asleep. Hands akimbo, with a leaf concealed. I called out to him. He smiled and made to come towards our shop. Then I did the 'forbidden'! I strapped the leaf across my mouth. In a split second, his friendly smile changed to a scorn. With the craze of a mad man, he took a stone and hurled it at me. Omo, I dodged it and Usain-bolted as fast as my tiny legs could carry me. He followed me still. People that cared tried to stop him. They could not hold him down for too long but it afforded me the grace to keep quite a distance. I got home, rounded the stairs, snapped the door open and bolted it behind. Breathing heavily. I stood there motionless, catching my breathe. Then he got to the door. Banging the door with such ferocity that one would've thought he had a sledge-hammer with him. Long story made short. Dad came back from work. Saw him howling and ranting his God-knows-what like a drunk. When he saw my dad, one would have thought he would stop. Never! He gained more mad-energy. Dad sha begged him and gave him money then he left. I got some serious beating from dad and severely warned against such. Was I wrong? Anything bad about tryint things out to ascertain their validity? Is there any scientific explanation for this?. Your views please. |
