It is a mark of development. Most conferences meant for Eastern Nigeria is now an Owerri thing and it keeps growing. Any wise government should encourage this hospitality boom as it is one of the highest money earner for Imo public. Most of those hotels have cheapest room of 8000 and all the rooms are fully booked every weekend. Lets assume there are only 5000 hotel rooms of 8k in Owerri. What it means is that the cheapest hotel rooms earn local exchange of 8000 x 5000 x 3 Naira everu weekend. What about the money spent at the dozens of clubs and eateries by these tourists? Imo government should harness the booming market and continue to beautify Owerri as Nigeria's Southern tourist haven. Owerri airport is now the 4th busiest in Nigeria.

Every higher institution including Madonna have prosttution rings. Never attempt to claim its an IMSU thing. Many of the girls you meet in Owerri are from schools in Enugu, Port Harcourt, Awka, Benin and Abia.

Again do not mistake the gathering of prostitutes in Owerre brothels as tourism, there is no form of tourism there but commercial se.x hawking. Places like Akwaibom and Calabar holds the ace for now in tourism in the entire southern Nigeria.

Jonathan killed Calabar and Akwaibom by allowing their roads decay and becoming inaccessible to outside world. Tinapa and Obudu are dead zones today. They boomed during OBJ and early times of Jonatgan/Yar'Adua. Owerri has long taken over. Right now weekend tourists to Imo State is extremely high. Rochas Okorocha as a Success Story

LAGOS JANUARY 23RD (URHOBOTODAY)-I used to have problem
with Governor Rochas Okorocha’s style of governance until I
visited Imo State during the Christmas period. I was surprised at
what I saw on ground. Owerri, the state capital is cleaner and
better. The young man has constructed more roads and the capital
is lot better than what I used to know. This is huge departure
from the clownish governance of Ikedi Ohakim and Achike
Udenwa. Now, I am so proud to be from Imo State and infinitely
proud to have Okorocha as my governor. He is one of the most
illustrious governors in the country today. The business of
managing the economy, creating jobs, fighting corruption, and
removing the remnants of corrupt political godfathers is moving in
the right direction under him.
The free education policy of the governor is not a sham at all. I
took my time to investigate this matter and I am pleased with
what I found out. In fact, in Imo State at the moment, it is pretty
difficult to get a house help because just about every child is in
school because of the free education policy of okorocha’s
administration. My Cousin that’s a medical student at the Imo
State University has stopped paying school fees thereby reducing
the financial burden on the family. This is a step in the right
direction because governance is about affecting the lives of the
poorest of the poor. Any policy that can have such a trickledown
effect is quite commendable because of the level of poverty in the
land. That is why I will keep praying that Jah should bless
Okorocha. He needs all the encouragement he can get. We need to
cheer him on to do more because there is still room for
improvement.
Much of what goes on today in Nigeria as governance is simply
grotesque drama. Our leaders are only interested in hoodwinking
the masses instead of offering them quality service. I may not be
a textbook economist but I am a roadside economist. I Judge the
efficacy of government policies by observing people on the streets
and in the rural areas. I judge by the quality of infrastructure, the
state of our roads, hospitals and quality of education. Using all
these as a touchstone, It is obvious that we have had a long run
of ill luck in leadership. A lot of our government officials are only
interested in amassing wealth and stashing huge amounts of cash
abroad at the detriment of our local economy. The problem with
Nigeria is not corruption but the type of corruption. There is no
economy in the world that did not develop on corruption. In the
developed world, corruption is internalized and production but
here it is externalized and destructive. We steal and keep outside
thereby destroying our economy and empowering those of other
nations. But here and there, we have some people in governance
we have a pretty accurate fix of what needs to be done. And
Okorocha is definitely one of them.
My prayer for him is that he needs not be distracted. He should
keep his vision rightly focused, his will fully engaged and self-
discipline intact. He should not allow anything to weaken his
morale and distort his judgment. Okorocha should always
understand that a leader engaged in trying to bring about a
transformation will find himself living in an environment hostile to
his intentions. The system he is trying to reform, after all, is the
established one. The Old order, as old orders always do, will be
fighting for its life and thus will be engaged in doing everything
possible to stop any new system from emerging. A transformationa
l leader has to be sure of what he wants happens and
extraordinarily strong-willed in seeing it does.
Why are some people trying to deny the fact that Okoroacha is a
great leader of our time? Is it out of envy or shortsightedness?
But I am glad that he has a knack for ignoring destructive
criticism. He feels neither threatened nor moved by such critics. I
will end this article by quoting a great American president,
Theodore Roosevelt. “It is not the critic who counts: not the
man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the
doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to
the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust
and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up
short again and again….who spends himself in a worthy cause;
who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high
achievement, and who at worst, if he fails, at least he fails while
daring greatly.â€

Stop deceiving yourself just to feel good because we all know the truth on the ground. Owerre is not anything close to tourism but the gathering of commercial se.x hawkers, they are two different things. I might as well get you pictures of people from Owerre that came to Onitsha for sight-seeing and holidaying at the new Upper-Iweka and flyover since they have none in their state. Fyi: No Onitsha resident can step into Owerre for any reason whatsoever. Those Onitsha and Nnewi guys that wishes to change environment during weekends usually throng Awka, that is why hotels, joints and relaxation spots are fulled booked each weekend.

Tourism boom encourages prostitution. Check Miami in Florida or Las Vegas in Nevada. Different things attract different people to a choice area. IMHO Owerri's major attraction is the hospitable and clean nature of Uratta people.

I am really worried about the poor electicity supply in my community. This problem has lasted for a very long time now. I dunno if other part of Orlu have the same experience.

Not only your community but the entire Nigeria. We have suffered in different parts of Rivers State despite the fact that we produce more power than required. Let the Febuhari change come and all shall be well with Nigeria.

It was a meeting of giants yesterday, 22nd of January 2014 as
Imo state university, Owerri was host to two Imo state
governorship aspirants: incumbent governor Rochas
Okorocha of the All Progressives Congress and the aspirant
from APGA, Captain Emmanuel Iheanacho.
The event, titled 2015 GENERAL ELECTION AND THE FUTURE
OF IMO STATE is spearheaded by the Political Science
Department of Imo state university under the leadership of
the Head of Department, Professor B.T.O Ikegwuoha with
intent of bringing all the governorship aspirants to an equal
platform and giving them the opportunity to deliver their
manifestoes to the students who number in thousands.
However only two out of all the aspirants invited were
present at the event: Rochas and Emmanuel.
The event brought together top staff of the university as well
as almost all the students of the university who massively
filled the university auditorium and some hung by the
windows to feed their ears on the sweet promises of the
politicians.
Captain Iheanacho was first to speak but unfortunately for
him, the students did not let him go too far into his speech
before they started chanting "Rochas we know" "Rochas we
know" and before long, the clean-shaved man who was
visibly embarrassed had to leave the podium and left the
school before Governor Rochas could take to the stage.
Captain Iheanacho however made promises of instituting
quality and free education, job creation, security and more in
the state.
There was a thunderous uproar when governor Rochas
climbed the podium.
He managed to calm the crowd and delivered his messages in
between moments of jubilant roars from the crowd of
students.
In his speech, Rochas said he was not out to campaign but to
set the records straight. He mourned the untimely departure
of Captain Iheanacho who spoke before him.
Rochas talked about the things he has done which included
stamping out kidnapping in the state, free education,
transforming of Okigwe and Orlu, building of roads and new
schools, payment of salary as at when due and more.
He said there is nothing his opponents will do in office that
he has not already done.
He concluded by saying that his second tenure will be about
"Factory, Factory, Factory and Job, job, job".
He further thrilled the students who were agog with cheers
by saluting them.
His leaving the stage of course marked the end of the event
as the students thronged about him as he headed out of
school.
The crowd was mammoth.
One thing you can't take away from Rochas is that he is a
great orator.
2015 General Election and The Future Of Imo State continues
today, 23rd January, 2015, at the university auditorium.
Today's event will feature the Senatorial candidates from
major political parties from Okigwe, Owerri and Orlu
senatorial zones.
Tomorrow, 24th January, 2015, the event will feature Deputy
governorship candidates from major political parties in the
state.

Abagworo,the problem of electricity in my community didn't start of recent. Do you know my community stays without electricity for more than 6months,its not that the transformer is bad o! No reasons given for the problem.
Since my village got connected to the national grid,it has always been low current. I have never seen a 220volts electricity before.
I just hope it changes soon.

I really love owerri. The beauty of owerri lies in new owerri, developers are just erecting heavy structures there, 'am looking forward to beautification of that place. If Imo state govt. can solve the traffic issues, have a train connecting her to Ph, then alot of workers in Ph will relocate to owerri, and go by train to work.

Half of Rivers State has seen little or no power in the last one year despite producing surplus from our power plants. The fault has been distribution and often blamed on sabotage.

I don't mean imo state govt doing all that but they can facilitate it, it's a federal govt project of course.
The truth remains that a lot of Ph residents are frustrated by congestion but they are helpless as they neither can leave their job nor find a close city to live while they still work in ph.
