Nigeria says UN force not needed to tackle Boko Haram Most comments on the source page said clueless has done it again, many weren't happy and so many people are disappointed over this news, please read and state your views Lagos (AFP) - Nigeria's top security official on Friday ruled out the need for a United Nations or African Union-backed force to fight Boko Haram, saying the country and its partners could handle the threat. Possible "enhanced international support" against Boko Haram will be discussed on the sidelines of an AU summit later this month, given fears about the group's threat to regional stability. But national security adviser Sambo Dasuki, a former army colonel, said wider assistance would not be necessary. "It's something that we can do. It's absolutely something we can do," he told BBC World Service radio in an interview. "I think as it is we are in good shape to address the issue with those partners, Niger, Chad and Cameroon." Representatives from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon met this week to thrash out details of a new regional force to counter the rising threat from the Islamist militants. An existing force, made up of troops from Nigeria, Niger and Chad appears to have collapsed in disarray even before the January 3 attack on its headquarters near the northeastern town of Baga. Troops from Niger and Chad were not present during the raid, which saw Baga razed and hundreds of civilians, if not more, killed in what is feared could be the insurgents' worst atrocity. Tuesday's meeting agreed to transfer the headquarters of the new force from Nigeria to the Chadian capital, N'Djamena, reflecting concern about Boko Haram's rising transnational threat. Boko Haram has seized dozens of towns and villages in the northeast in the last six months and now controls the border of Borno State with Niger, Chad and Cameroon. Some analysts have suggested that it is trying to revive a defunct 19th century Islamic caliphate, whose borders corresponded to parts of modern-day Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon. The group's leader Abubakar Shekau, however, mocked the proposed new force in a video published online on Tuesday, boasting that his fighters would take on all comers and that "Nigeria is dead". "The kings of Africa... I challenge you to attack me now. I am ready," he said. http://news.yahoo.com/nigeria-says-un-force-not-needed-tackle-boko-165542595.html |

Nice call! Jonathan should stick to his guns! Anything is better without the help of any amorphous organisation controlled by the "crusading" NATO alliance. The west and their allies with all their dangerous negative propoganda against Nigeria in this war coupled with their refusal to sell arms to Nigeria are only trying to find ways to get involved directly. The ultimate aim ? Weaken, balkanise, disorganise and dislocate Nigerias surging drive towards becoming a modernised state, a status that will naturally make her a "local champion" calling the shots in this region. People, it is a dirty political/diplomatic chase game going on here and I expect Nigerians to stand with this government on this very issue irrespective of party affliations. They should send UN peacekeepers to Congo, Somalia, Libya and co if they are desperate to deploy somewhere. . This country isz capable of handling this mess. All we need to do is to make sure that those in authority do their bit by providing our troops with the weapons and training they need to cut shekau and his gang to size. Please all Nigerians should say no to foreign intervention. It is a prelude to disaster. |

Op you are horrendously pathetic as a biased to the left writer. There are obviously many things you don't understand about international diplomacy and UN/NATO military intervention in vulnerable states. Nigeria is going with the AU standby force who are reasonably positioned for the task. What, you want us to go cap in hand, begging the UN that is controlled by the Proud Americans (who have spited you severally) and their stooges. I'd rather have the French (who know the African terrain better and have more astake) who are more loyal to their colonies or the Chinese a thousand times over the Americans. Think my friend, what has the 'Great American Hope of the Black Man' done for Africa since he became President of the US? When the chips are down, we Africans are on our own. |

Whatever You are our representative. Do anything to protect ur citizens from a group that refused to assist, refused to sell ammunition and isolated us when their assistance is most needed. We are one hell of a country that can take care of ourselves if not the involvement of the military to the insurgency, playing eye service in open, playing Devils advocate in secret. |

The inability of the GEJ govt to indict and prosecute any publicly know figure for this BH onslaught is self-indicting and points to the fact that it is his own team (GEJ) that will face prosecution at the world court for crimes against humanity. |

The problem with Nigeria's Security is that we have an incompetent Commander-In-Chief. Change and Nigeria will bounce back. Jonathan have Zero Training to command or Lead. Vote for Buhari to solve the problem of Corruption, Insecurity and the bad Economy. |

THIS JONATHAN DOES NOT WANT UNITEDNATIONS ASSISTANCE TO CONTAIN THE BOKO HARAM INSURGENCY. UNITED NATIONS SHOULD PLEASE INDICT JONATHAN. THIS JONATHAN'S ACTION CONSTITUTES A SERIOUS CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY. JONATHAN IS USING AND BENEFITING FROM THE BOKOHARAM.

olrotimi:I have nothing against America, as a matter of fact, i think you learned soo much BS and you are paranoid, the mention of America and HELP in the same context , you and some others go automatically berserk , saying everything no one needs to hear Trust me when i say America knows your secrets and terrains and your assets more than anyone else in the world , UN is willing to sacrifice people for the safety and uplifting of Nigerians in the north and all you can come up with is conspiracy Check my posts about Boko Haram, everything i said has come true , They declared caliphate, they chased soldiers, Boko Haram has strong holds in more than 5 states all interlinked , soon as their forces become 7000 , there'll be no stopping a similiar even in History, Tutsi / Utsu , i believe you know the story My point being, STOP REFUSING HELP IF YOU ARE NOT UNTOP OF THE SITUATION |

This rejection may not be unconnected with fact that there's a plan to push the general polls to a later date, in order to realise this, escalating the NE insurgency may be a tenable reason. |
