WILL THE STRANGE, GANG-UP BY THESE ARMY GENERALS WORK AGAINST PRESIDENT JONATHAN By Iyke Nwambie

Generals Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), Olusegun Obasanjo (OBJ) and Muhammadu Buhari(GMB) have remained daily names within the political-psyche of the Nigerian nation. They say what catches their fancy whenever they want to. They tell Nigerians who to vote for during every election year, and when they lose out in the "power-games" at Aso rock, they do a quick 360-degrees and begin to galvanize the "unthinking" portion of the Nigerian teeming masses against their former proteges.

In case you have forgotten, it was the likes of IBB who after telling us that Chief Moshood Abiola could not rule Nigeria due to reasons best known to him and his military cabal, chose to rehabilitate OBJ in an attempt to appease the overtly offended great people of Yorubaland. And when OBJ reneged on their "power-sharing" formula by going for a second term in office, IBB said: "...The north cannot put all their eggs in one basket like they did before..." Unfortunately for IBB, OBJ bulldozed his way through using all the appurtenances of incumbency to his advantage.

OBJ eventually pacified IBB by supporting the late Umaru Yar'Adua (after the Nigerian senate failed to amend the constitution for a third term in office). And within a couple of months of witnessing Yar'Adua's slow-but-determined leadership, it was obvious that IBB was the one calling the shots through President Yar'Adua (late) instead of OBJ. That obviously irked OBJ beyond words as he watched his much vaunted legacies disappear gradually through the new acts of President Yar' Adua. And when OBJ saw the opportunity to fight back, he did by telling Yar'Adua to quit if his health was failing him.

That act ignited a series of public reactions which led to the emergence of the incumbent President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ). GEJ interestingly, happens to be the very opposite of these Generals. He refused to interfere with the results of any elections which led to his party, PDP, loosing about four states in quick successions to the opposition parties, he refused to see politics as a "do-or-die" affair like OBJ once boasted, he maintained that his ambition was not worth the death of anyone unlike one of the Generals, General Muhammadu or Mohammed Buhari (I was told that they were both one and the same thing) who openly told every ear that cared to listen concerning what would happen if he failed to win through his "...blood of baboon..." speech.

Now, before you wander off on what the import of this submission is all about. I want you to know that it is all about the sudden re-grouping of these Generals for an all-time political offensive against what they have called "corruption in leadership." And in their school of thought, General Buhari is the one that can salvage the Nigerian system. Take for instance, when OBJ was asked about General Buhari's certificate saga, he said, "...Once a General, always a General...It is not Abati or Okupe...that will tell General Buhari what to do..." When he was reminded about General Buhari's inability to stop corruption in a small agency like the PTF (OBJ scrapped the PTF) which led to the embezzlement of over 25 billion naira under General Buhari's watch, OBJ said, "...Buhari was not liable for that..." What OBJ was trying to say was: "Yes, Buhari should not be blamed for that embezzlement because it was carried out by those under him in an agency he was directly the head...Yet, President Jonathan is the one that should account for the embezzlements in the different Local governments, State governments and Ministries carried out by those under him."

When the opinion of General Babangida was sought on who should lead Nigeria next, he said: "...We have a sense of 'espirit-de-corps' in the military..." When GMB visited him, he said, "...Old soldiers never die, they fade...You have not faded...The military will back you up...The Generals are for you..." When he was asked about the loyalty of the military to his claims..and the possibility of President Jonathan rigging the elections, he said, "...All the people in power today that you see, are boys to our boys...So, they will not rig the elections."

It is noteworthy that all these men are able to say all these "flip-flops" because of the gentle temperaments of President GEJ. Well, IBB should not worry about rigging the elections because GEJ has shown again and again that transparent elections can be carried out in Nigeria through his enviable records contrary to OBJ who once said, "...Even if Jesus Christ was was to conduct elections in Nigeria, that election will still be rigged..."

So, while Nigerians are listening to the words of these Generals, the question that will remain in the hearts and lips of "right-thinking-Nigerians" are:

1. Why must these men who ought to be enjoying their retirements with grace like General Gowon is doing, (having contributed immensely to the sub-optimal state of the Nigerian nation) be allowed to continue to dictate their selfish and short-sighted preferences to us?

2. What is the wisdom in voting for a Buhari who never showed strong leadership even as a Military head of state suddenly become the toast of these Generals?

3. Why should General Babangida who toppled General Buhari for incompetence be listened to at this time?

4. Does General Buhari understand a lick of what is going on in the world today?

5. How can Nigeria command the respect of the outside world with a Buhari who is better-known for entrusting leadership on his subordinates?

It is these posers and several others that led me to the conclusion that: Though, President Jonathan might not have scored 100 percent on all counts, he still towers far above a General Buhari who is still struggling to remember the correct names of his running mate.

May God bless Nigeria!

Below is nice piece by Prof. Soludo: God Bless Prof. Soludo.

"The parallels with the Shagari regime are troubling. First, at the time of oil boom, Nigeria again went on a consumption spree such that the budgets of the last five years can best be described as ‘consumption budgets’, with new borrowing by the federal government exceeding the actual expenditure on critical infrastructure.

Second, not one penny was added to the stock of foreign reserves at a period Nigeria earned hundreds of billions from oil. For comparisons, President Obasanjo met about $5 billion in foreign reserves, and the average monthly oil price for the 72 months he was in office was $38, and yet he left $43 billion in foreign reserves after paying $12 billion to write-off Nigeria’s external debt. In the last five years, the average monthly oil price has been over $100, and the quantity also higher but our foreign reserves have been declining and exchange rate depreciating.
I note that when I assumed office as Governor of CBN, the stock of foreign reserves was $10 billion.
The average monthly oil price during my 60 months
in office was $59, but foreign reserve reached the all- time peak of $62 billion (and despite paying $12 billion for external debt, and losing over $15 billion during the unprecedented global financial and economic crisis) I left behind $45 billion. Recall also that our exchange rate continuously appreciated during this period and was at N117 to the dollar before the global crisis and we deliberately allowed it to depreciate in order to preserve our reserves. My calculation is that if the economy was better managed, our foreign reserves should have been between $102 –$118 billion and exchange rate around N112 before the fall in oil prices. As of now, the reserves should be around $90 billion and exchange rate no higher than N125 per dollar."

"Fourth, poverty incidence and unemployment are
also simultaneously at all-time high levels. According
to the NBS, poverty incidence grew to 69% in 2010
and projected to be 71% in 2011, with
unemployment at 24%. This is the worst record in
Nigeria’s history, and the paradox is that this
happened during the unprecedented oil boom.
One theme I picked up listening to the campaign
rallies as well as to some of the propagandists is the
confusion about measuring government
“performance”. Most people seem to confuse
‘inputs’, or ‘processes’ with output. Earlier this
month, I had a dinner with a group of friends (14 of
us) and we were chit-chatting about Nigeria. One of
us, an associate of President Jonathan veered off to
repeat a propaganda mantra that Jonathan had
outperformed his predecessors. He also reminded us that Jonathan re-based the GDP and that Nigeria is now the biggest economy in Africa; etc. It was fun listening to the response by others. In sum, the
group agreed that the President had ‘outperformed’
his predecessors except that it is in reverse order."

First, my friend was educated that re-basing the GDP is no achievement: it is a routine statistical exercise, and depending on the base year that you choose, you get a different GDP figure. Re-basing the GDP has nothing to do with government policy. Besides, as naira-dollar exchange rate continues to depreciate, the GDP in current dollars will also shrink considerably soon.
We were reminded of Jonathan’s agricultural
‘revolution’. But someone cut in and noted that for all the propaganda, the growth rate of the agricultural sector in the last five years still remains far below the performance under Obasanjo. One of us reminded him that no other president had presided over the slaughter of about 15,000 people by insurgents in a peacetime; no other president earned up to 50% of the amount of resources the current government earned from oil and yet with very little outcomes; no other president had the rate of borrowing; none had significant forex earnings and yet did not add one penny to foreign reserves but losing international reserves at a time of boom; no other president had a depreciating exchange rate at a time of export boom; at no time in Nigeria’s history has poverty reached 71% (even under Abacha, it was 67 -70%); and under
no other president did unemployment reach 24%.
Surely, these are unprecedented records and he
surely ‘outperformed’ his predecessors! What a
satire!

"One of those present took the satire to some level by comparing Jonathan to the ‘performance’ of the
former Governor of Anambra, Peter Obi. He noted
that while Obi gloated about ‘savings’, there is no
signature project to remember his regime except
that his regime took the first position among all
states in Nigeria in the democratization of poverty—-mass impoverishment of the people of Anambra.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics,
poverty rose under his watch in Anambra from 20%
in 2004 (lowest in Nigeria then) to 68% in 2010 (a
238% deterioration!). Our friend likened it to a father who had no idea of what to do with his resources and was celebrating his fat bank account while his children were dying of kwashiorkor. He pointed out that since it is the likes of Peter Obi who are the advisers to Jonathan on how to manage the economy (thereby confusing micromanagement which you do as a trader with macro governance) it is little wonder that poverty is fast becoming another name for Nigeria. It was a very hilarious evening."

"My advice to President Jonathan and his handlers is
to stop wasting their time trying to campaign on his
job record. Those who have decided to vote for him
will not do so because he has taken Nigeria to the
moon. His record on the economy is a clear ‘F’ grade. As one reviews the laundry list of micro interventions the government calls its achievements, one wonders whether such list is all that the government could deliver with an unprecedented oil boom and an unprecedented public debt accumulation. I can clearly see why reasonable people are worried."

I give all royalties and benefits to this same "ex-generals" the writer villifies, cos they gave the ultimate service to this country from which we lay claim to.

Besides, wen they supported GEJ in 2011 against their region's wishes, it wasn't a gang up then, right?.

As OBJ said, "Nigeria before Politics"

GEJ is taking Nigeria towards the precipice, GMB is the God's anointed to clean uup the heavy mess.

Please pardon my brief answers, I am used to objectives questions.

1. Mandela became South Africa president after 70 years. Nnamdi Azikwe and Obafemi Awolowo contested for the presidency after 70 years. Several past world leaders got to the position after 70 years. Use google if your laptop battery is charged because I am sure there has not been light in your area for several days now due to the FRESH AIR. An old responsible man will always be more useful than a young world-known irresponsible drunk.

2. Buhari has always shown strong leadership even before he became the head of state. When some riffraffs from Chad Republic tried to stray into Nigeria's territory during Shagari's regime, it was Buhari who personally headed the destruction of the insurgents, Buhari pushed them far into Chad's region and even created a buffer at the border. Even Maitasine insurgents who were more or less like the current Boko Haram started going crazy and destroying lives and properties during Buhari's regime, Buhari personally flew into the hot area where the insurgents were maiming and killing, my brother, that was the end of Maitasine. The Maitasine were totally wiped out. Your young world-known responsible drunk has been drinking ogogoro in Aso-Rock for about 8 or 9 months since Chibok girls were kidnapped, your C-in-C only stepped into Borno State when he wanted to campaign for votes. He dare not go near Sambisa forest. He does not have the balls, his wife imPatience Sheppopo will not allow him take that risk.

3. IBB and Abacha did not topple Buhari because Buhari was incompetent, instead, IBB and Abacha toppled Buhari because Buhari was not listening to their selfish advises. Recall that Abacha once said that they (Abacha and IBB) regretted their action, Abacha went on to beg Buhari to head the PTF. If you can't see any PTF project in your area, then you have eyes problem, borrow one of ImPatience Sheppopo's glasses, she carries two glasses around.

4. If you think that Buhari does not understand what is going on around the world, then ask Jonathan why his Minister for Information called Labaran Maku said that Jonathan brought Facebook to Nigeria, even my grandmother is not that ignorant.

5. You said that Buhari is better-known for entrusting leadership on his subordinates, this is why it is called government, it is a group work by everybody. The Vice-President position is not ceremonial like Jonathan was doing in Yar'Adua's regime. This is even better than your world-known drunk who entrusted leadership in his illiterate wife? imPatience Jonathan selected PDP governorship candidate in Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross-Rivers states, she even tried the same thing in Oyo state. When Maitasine was messing up in Buhari's regime, he did not just sit in Lagos and ask the Chief of Defence Staff to fight Maitasine, he (Buhari) flew into the trouble zone himself and that was the end of Maitasine, your young drunk was drinking in Aso-Rock while imPatience Sheppopo Jonathan called the meeting of Service Chiefs, WAEC Officials, School heads, Commissioners e.t.c just to say 'Chai Chai Dere is Godu oooo'

There have been some shouting from minority members of the public saying that they will not VOTE for President Goodluck Jonathan because he is not a good man or did not achieve anything. Everyday, as the achievement of Jonathan is made public the more some of them are shouting that they may have judged him wrongly. Is Jonathan Really Bad?
1] Goodluck Jonathan signed FOI bill that Obasanjo refused to sign and you join then in saying that Goodluck is bad.

2] Goodluck approved N18,000 Minimum wage from N7,500 Which Obasanjo refused to sign and you say that Goodluck is bad and NYSC allowance from N7,500 to nearly approved N39,500, yet they say he is bad.

3] Goodluck dualized federal roads (about 25,000km) which Obasanjo (even in His Ogun State) and past Govts abandoned and you say Goodluck is bad.

4] The rail system is working now, Trains move from (Enugu - PH) (Lagos Kano) soon Maiduguri - PH with little budget But obasanjo Sunk in billions of dollars without result, other pasts leader ignored (Like Buhari) and you say that Goodluck is bad.

5] Goodluck has been conducting free and fair elections whereas the ones conducted under Obasanjo are Shameful and national disgrace yet you say Goodluck is bad.

6] Goodluck established 12 new universities, 9 in the North to improve learning and knowledge and increase the Jambites admission rate, yet you say that Goodluck is bad.

7] Goodluck established the Almajiri system for Northern abandoned street children and those deprived of education by their own people and you say Goodluck is bad.

8] Goodluck has been building dams and improving the country's power from 2500mW to 6,000MW - And successfully privatized the sector which many analyst believed is the best way to go and you joined them say that Goodluck is bad.

9] Agriculture have been revamped and for the first time in Nigerian history, Food prices came down during Christmas, instead of skyrocketing and you say that he is a bad President.

10] 2013 and 2014 was the Christmas in Nigeria, where Nigerian did not sleep in filling stations for 3 to 4days to get Petrol or 100s of people being roasted alive in attempts to get fuel in petrol stations, wickedly, you joined them to say that our God given President is not performing.

11] Airports are wearing world class looks and every zone has an International airport and you say Goodluck is bad.

12] This administration has employed more people in their 5 years in office than any other in the history of Nigeria [Via Agric, Energy sector, 3New Car Companies on ground and have "Made in Nigeria Vehicle" (Nissan., KIA, INNOSON) , 3,826 primary Health care Centers, Teaching Hospitals] SURE-P, YOUWIN and you say Goodluck is bad.

Now do you think that the weak or senile Buhari will perform magic, which he could not do when he was in his 40s, if you vote him? What did he do for Nigeria as Military Governor of North/East (Now poorest zone in Nigeria), Oil Minister, Head of state and PTF chairman. The answer is Nothing, Not even a Nursery school in any part of the country. What else do want from Jonathan? If you want power to return to your region by all means, Please wait till 2019 when Jonathan by God's grace may have repositioned Nigeria as progressing and prosperous Country. This Opportunity Will Not come to us again in the Next 100 years. Nigeria belong to all us. Buhari and his co-military boys are like beetles, they only Destroy and Never build.

GIVE JONATHAN THE BUILDER THE CHANCE TO COMPLETE THE TRANSFORMATION PROCESS

A lot of rubbish. Firstly, Ibori was the power behind Yaradua having allegedly financed most of the campaign with the help of delta state resources. Secondly, both Obasanjo and Ibb are pdp men. If they choose not to support Jonathan and indeed many have, ask yourself why the pdp has become that kind of party under Jonathans leadership. Why is the party falling apart? Why does patience Jonathan exercise as much power as the party chairman? Why are we now constantly threatened by Ijaw groups with war unless their man wins?

Obasanjo found most of the fraud in the PTF was committed by the committee setup to wind down its operations, after Buhari. On a personal and professional level Buhari towers far above Jonathan, who has not once distinguished himself, as deputy, acting- and governor of Bayelsa state. And certainly, not as president. Indeed the people of Bayelsa have little reason to remember his term in office, and even from abuja he continues to wreak havoc in the polity there. He has failed to defend our territorial integrity, failed to provide security or electricity, failed to appreciate the scale and the need to tackle corruption... Do I go on?
Buhari is not the kind of man to play around in office. His character remains unimpeached despite all the propaganda thrown around by the government. He is not a greedy avaricious accumulator of stolen wealth, unlike the present leadership. He is also a nationalist with great experience and knowledge of the army, and a great team to support him in the apc. Look at the response of the pdp to Dr. Soludos criticism and do a compare contrast with the response of the apc penned by Dr. Fayemi. The difference should amaze and impress you. The pdp has been given long enough to be productive and now the nation is exhausted by the jamboree called governance under the pdp. Let Jonathan run from church to church while we show the ideas we have about a new Nigeria. Jonathan is a failure and has to go.

There us none of these people that Jonathan does not beg on a regular basis,. If he is not throwing defence contracts down IBB's way he is giving free hand to Danjuma to choose Taraba next gov. All these prayers are wasted on your clueless guy who worships worldly powers more than God.
