Minister of State for Power, Mohammed Wakil, has said Nigeria was now a power sector reform model to the South African government, saying that country now emulates Nigeria’s power sector privatisation model for the transformation of its ailing energy sector.
According to him, this is a vindication of the durability of the policies and programmes of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration, saying power was one of such major components.
He stated this at the signing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the federal government and TBEA Co ltd of China for the development of transmission lines and substations in Nigeria.
He cited the crisis rocking the South African power sector which had necessitated the country to draft a power sector privatisation bill now before its parliament.

“Nigeria has become a model for power sector reforms in Africa. We must commend Mr. President for this,” he said.
He further stated that the need to improve on the nation’s transmission sub-stations cannot be over emphasised, as all the efforts geared towards generation and distribution of power, cannot receive a face-lift, without a corresponding wheeling power through a reliable and strong transmission network.

He enjoined the company not to only develop transmission lines and build transmission sub-stations but to also fulfil its earlier promise of setting up a transformer manufacturing company in Africa by situating it in Nigeria.
He said that it will assist Nigeria in the development of a robust transmission outlet.

He called on the corporation to also provide adequate training for the Nigerian workforce, through its support for local content policy of government, assuring it that government would on its part, give full cooperation to ensure a smooth take-off of its activities in Nigeria.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Company, Mr. Sheng Shuangxu, called on the government to facilitate the acquisition of relevant data as well as the execution of needed commercial agreements required for the bank ability of the project.
He disclosed that the conglomerate was a world-class manufacturer of electrical products, serving over 147 countries in the world, adding that it was glad doing business with Nigeria as the largest country on the African continent.

'Eskom ( south African power giant) is currently broke and South African government is not looking to finance it anymore. They are now looking at selling non core asset - reform. You need to ask some of your southie friends on Nairaland what they have been experiencing under SA power giant Eskom to know that you are not alone. Even 'advanced' South Africa is facing power rationing crisis......I think Africans are just waking up to the situation at hand, the population is rising at a dramatic rate thus suffocating the dilapidated infrastructures in place. This is a revolution by NIgeria as the state can not monopolize a huge and capital intensive service sector......

You'll feel the effect of the reform with time, it is not a rapid affair just as the telecommunication reform that you are enjoying today wasn't a day success......
