Zimbabwe's Mugabe, 90, becomes African Union chairman

In his acceptance speech, Africa's oldindependence from Britain in 1980 assumed the largely ceremonial role when he was handed the AU flag and gavel at a summit in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababaest head of state spoke of the need to guard against foreigners exploiting the continent's mineral wealth and called for more assistance for African farmers.

Okay he's got 30+ years as member of the AU/OAU but it goes to show a lack of leadership on the African continent,Mugabe?!hahahahaha haba.....was there an election?

We don't need any election because many people do not know how to vote for the right guy. You've got to beat them up to teach them how to use common sense when voting. That is why some were beaten in Zimbabwe in past elections.

His people love him and voted him massively. Doesn't matter what the white man says. I can't hate him cos whiteman wants us to. He is infact the best for AU Chair. His country constitution permits him to contest all the past election. So he did not contravene any laws. This white peeps are far more greedy. Consider the US that seem like "god" to you. Senior Bush ruled, then Bill Clinton succeeded him, Bush son (junior Bush) took over from him. Yet again, Clinton's wife came out to take over though Obama beat her at primaries. Do you know that presently Jeb Bush is coming out to take over from Obama while Hilary Clinton at about 80 wants also to take over? That means in 32yrs, US would be sharing power only between two households ( Bush and Clinton) , if it works out that we have Jeb Bush vs Hilary Clinton. Of course Obama is the only alien in the line. So take away his 8yrs that gives 24 yrs shared between two homes. Yet those hypocrites and their dumb citizens say nothing. Can you guess all the horrible bashing the US pple and govt would have poured out against Africa, should same thing happen in Africa? Mugabe is perfect if we really need true freedom from the West. Damn the West, we are in our own continent. We decide whats good for us. And Mugabe is the best at this time. Congrats Mugabe!

I've got nothing against Mugabe,infact I like his humor,but voting him AU chair is hilarious,well Africans has always liked 'work experience' ,Mugabe has 34yrs of that

Mugabe is old but at the moment he's the only pan-African leader the westerners haven't destroyed yet. Who better to head AU than the AU himself?

It wouldn't hurt to keep your nose in people's business, some day it might come in handy.

Please forgive me for that piece. No offense to my brothers and sisters, wouldn't talk about whites or people outside Africa, I've never lived outside and I have no idea how an avarage European thinks like. Let's not talk about what we see or read in the media, most of those are staged.

I'm African but also European by nationality and I can tell you it's the same story everywhere. You won't escape silly comments that are far from the truth whether you're in the east or the west.
