now I know from this forum/topic the type of mentality that is embedded in the mind of youths......it reflects the fact that most youth are actually endorsing the act of stealing....in short that if u steal public fund not meant for u..u still can not be branded corrupt..such as the likes of bode george, like the internationally convicted criminal that recieved jonathans pardon running now for a senatorial position......it is only in nigeria that u see such scenario. try these things in the US and get caught..u will know stealing is an act of corruption, try that in china and get caught...it death by firing squard.
chai.there was a great country called giant of Africa with good virtues. ..but what are we known for today, we are known for corruption, albeit stealing public funds, fraudulent activities and even conviniently habouring terrorist
wake up my giant from ur slumber. .and rise up to that which u have been called
march 28 awaits u.....

It's only in cases of embezzlement that theft intersects corruption. Besides that, theft is theft and corruption is corruption. Even in such a case, one shouldn't escape with the lighter punishment. I agree with the president.

Anyone who says every act of corruption is an act of stealing [sic] has no idea what we are talking about.

Ngwakwe:
Some so-called intellectuals are becoming mentally redundant.

1. The comment was a direct quote by the President in reference to a speech made by the Chief Justice of the federation.

2. Where I come from, a thief and a corrupt person is not the same so also is it in many parts of Nigeria.

We assume that Abomination is higher degree of Sin hence the Abominable needs to be ostracised.

3. In communication (syntax and semantics), the understanding of the recipient is/should be the target of the speaker to avoid defeating the purpose of the information delivered.

Let's stop flogging the dead horse. There is no mis-communication in the explanation of the President rather what we have are bunch of hate mongers who not only show their stupidity in attacking everything the President represents as a manifestations of the absolute resentment and antagonism.
alrite then with all u have said n didnt say,so are u tryin 2 justify his stealing and corrupt praticeshuh

These lawyers with sabi sabi don't seem to understand President Jonathan's take on the matter. The president speaks bearing in mind Nigerians' attitude toward someone who is said to be "corrupt" and the one who is said to be "a thief". There is, therefore, no need for any legal "sabiness" interpretation thereto. Go to a market place and point to some one and call him "corrupt" and see how many heads will turn to look at the person. But call the same person "thief" and see what will happen. GEJ wants us to remove these corrupt persons from the domain of vague legal interpretations into the open field where ordinary Nigerians could see them for what they really are; "thieves"!

Who said Corruption is ONLY stealing? Corruption is an UMBRELLA and all dt u mentioned are seated comfortably under its shade. The semantic gymnastics of GEJ on ds issue only ties d noose tighter. What GEJ is trying to argue in futility is that Adultery is Not a SIN or that an example of SIN does nt include Adultery!

Stealing is a subset of corruption...... Because corruption is a universal set that encompass all (dishonesty, unscrupulousness, double-dealing, fraud, fraudulence, misconduct, crime, criminality, wrongdoing; bribery, venality, extortion, profiteering, payola; informalgraft, stealing, grift, crookedness, sleaze)

So trying to separate the two is just like trying to cover for ones goof at a point in time
Thank you oh. The saddest part is those who keep defending gej on that statement. The type of illiteracy that we are suffering from is alarming

Ngwakwe, I beg to disagree with your assertion. I wouldn't have responded to your post if the syntax/semantic ish never came up.

What is Synatx: In a layman's definition, it refers to a branch of linguistics which governs the rule of language language

What is Semantics: It's also a branch of linguistics which refers to meaning in respect to symbols, words, phrases and what they mean.

Having clarified these two branches of linguistics, it would therefore be right to say your inclusion of Syntax in the discourse is flawed since the utterance of the President does not beg for linguistic analysis.

Therefore, a thief in EVERY part of the world is as a result of corrupt/soiled/perverted upbringing/personal conviction. Hence, your assertion of where you come from is again not accepted.

That someone sins in Christendom is the same as committing an abomination before God. And that would imply that for you to do something abominable means that you have flouted (sinned or gone contrary to) the set rules of the land, which again makes the two the same.

In your quest to defend the President, it would also be right to say that the President lacks the will to communicate effectively. Hence, the infamous quote you're trying to defend is 'Pragmatically' and 'Stylistics' interpreted, rather than depend on other part of the text/discourse for meaning.

What then is Pragmatics: This is a branch of linguistics which studies how CONTEXTS contribute to meaning or how a language is used in a CONTEXT.

And Stylistics? This deals with the study of texts/speech/utterance in regard to their tonal style

The concept of communication in this regard is well established and one would not need to put bits and pieces together to understand what the President means. While we're trying to create further argument between bad and evil, please note that another infamous phrase of the President; "How much did Jim Nwobodo stole?" is also to further expatiate that the President is a man of corrupt values, morals and would still go on to defend this shameful claim of his at the international scene if given a chance. I spent 4 years studying the branches of linguistics and would gladly analyze every speech of the President to prove my claim.

Abeg, let's enjoy politics cheesy

I beg to defer a bit. the comment was not a direct quote of Justice Mustapha. the comment was in in reference to what the Judge told Gej. that most cases of corruption brought before him were stealing. Gej never quoted the judge saying ...'stealing is not corruption. ' Gej said that himself.
Be that as it may, how I now understand is comment is that corruption is as been seen as a mild form of stealing in Nigeria. so its better we say someone that stole is a thief rather than say is corrupt. cos saying he's corrupt will only make it seems less grieve.
well, Gej should have previously say...Not all corrupt is stealing. with that we would have known that not all cases of corruption is stealing.
but by saying. ..stealing is not corruption the interpretation it gave was ..not all cases of stealing is corruption. which is absolutely not true.
All stealing is corruption bit all corruption is not stealing. Gbam!
Thank you jare
Don't mind all this praise singers he surrounded himself with, what he meant might be different from what hour said, but trying to cover up by quoting out of context is really bad,he is human,we all can make mistakes,he is not God.

lol, accepted. That's a slip of the QWERTY keyboard. And mind u, av u ever heard of the phrases, White collar job and self employ job?

The instance u gave about seun establishin Nairaland, it means he's self employed, and as a matter of fact, he's not a grauduate and he is doing well for himself.

80% of our graduates are seeking for jobs but all to no avail.

The president even said in one news that he's the first president in Nigeria to ever create 54,000 jobs. Imagine, 54,000 jobs in 6 years. So it means 54,000 was given a job out of over 160 million Nigerians. What of the remaining 159.46 million Nigerians? Jobless or what.

Pls bro, get your fact right and support those who will CHANGE Nigeria
