docs in the house! I need your help..please! I noticed have lost about 5kg of my weight within 14months. I haven't checked my new weight since August last year tho. but each time I go back home from school, my mum is always complaining about my weight loss.. my clothes still fit perfectly, but I noticed my collar bone region isn't filled up as before.. its kinda getting deep. I'm a naturally slim person, but I'm really hating how my neck region is! I'm baffled, how can I lose weight (as people complain I do) and my clothes still fit?? I'm not anorexic neither do I plan for the weight loss! also, I noticed for the past two months.. veins in my arms are visible when I drop my hands downwards.. but if I raise them upwards, they disappear. more like the blood flows downwards when I drop my arms(silly thinking?). they tend to be a lil swollen at the back of my palm when faced downwards.. and this makes my hands look ugly! I love the way my hands look before this development! what could be the cause? swollen vein(or whatever that is) and unregulated weight loss(that's what I call it) nb; my recent b/p is 100/60 for a lady in her very early twenties, weight; less than 44kg height: about 5ft1' I don't stress myself, I sleep well(if not too well,, I'm a good sleeper) and eat well( tho I'm not a large eater naturally) my eyes are going deep into my head .. I use glasses , believe that's the cause but my brother uses glasses too..and his eyes hadn't gone deep! I really hate how bony and deep my neck region is! I believe those infos should help us get somewhere |

lol! I went to a hospital..met with an unresponsive doc! explained my weight loss issue to him , but I was unable to tell him other stuffs as he tends to be impatient.. as if what I had is something 'not to be serious' about!! smh! he was just saying yes, yes, closing his eyes at interval..like he's fed up!! rubbish! he asked for my lmp .. huh?wrote out about 3 tests I need to undergo.. I will be going for the test tho..but not this week! I need to tend to some things! his unresponsiveness brought me here as I believe I can get a better chance with docs here... |

My own is worse and all the doctor could do is to collect consultation fee and nod their head like lizard and at the end of the day they will write out some test for me to do. |

sacredheart:Your new weight would be desirable. If you weighed 44kg last year August, let's know how much you weight now. It's the only objective way to answer the question below. I'm baffled, how can I lose weight (as people complain I do) and my clothes still fit?? also, I noticed for the past two months.. veins in my arms are visible when I drop my hands downwards.. but if I raise them upwards, they disappear. more like the blood flows downwards when I drop my arms(silly thinking?).Your veins are becoming prominent because you body fat stores is becoming low. Do you exercise frequently? The veins themselves are not swollen. They become prominent when fat around them is diminishing. Also, there's something called 'varicose veins". Veins have valves that prevent back flow of blood. When these valves become damaged blood can get engorged in a vein making it look prominent. What tests did the doctors ask you to do? Besides the unintentional weight loss, what else have you noticed? Any slight fever ? Has your appetite changed? What else have you noticed? |

lomaxx:I weight 45kg March 2013 , 40kg August 2014.. haven't gone back to check. appetite change; I'm not much of a eater, way back and present.. lil or no changes. however, there are few times I eat more/less than my normal food consumption rate. tests: he didn't specify. he just wrote them out in my file..asked for my last menstruation period..that's all! fever: i felt my body temp was higher than usual..it lasted for about 3months.. during this period, I didn't feel sick ..not at all ..just a raised body temp. no cold , no illness. its back to normal now. exercise: lol the only exercise I do is ; walking haven't noticed anything.. this might count tho: the skin in my palm do peel a little which I believe is due to the weather.. but around January it peeled too much for my liking,.. and oh! this peeling came after/with some very tiny dark spots on my palm..which was more concentrated on my left palm than right. its gone now, but I noticed it left more lines on my palms than it was before. |

sacredheart:Finally something to hold on to. has your menstrual pattern changed? dyu feel Your heart beat unusually? Have you noticed that you are now irritable, nervous or anxious? do you poop more frequently? |
| Re: What Could Be The Problem? by sacredheart(op): 9:28am On Feb 18, 2015 |
lomaxx:yes! my heart beat unusually sometimes.. I don't poop frequently. yes I get anxious.. but have 'always' been anxious at things. there are few times, I have a sudden heartbeat like when one is afraid (when actually I'm not) menstrual pattern: if I'm not mistaken.. I noticed its become lighter and much. and the premenstrual pain i do have, had subsided a lil.. used to have a wicked waist/back Pain and stomach ache a day b4 my menses but these past few months, the waist pain had gone.. |

sacredheart:You could be having a thyroid problem. Emphasis on "could be". It's not a diagnosis. Only your doctor has the power to make such conclusions. But from what you've told me so far that's the most probable conclusion - hyperthyroidism. An overactive thyroid will manifest as weight loss despite good or increased appetite, excessive sweating, heat intolerance, menstrual abnormalities (typically your menstruation becomes lighter, less frequent, painless to low menstrual pain, sometimes you don't bleed at all), unusual heart beating, and dry skin (you mentioned the skin of your left palm drying and flaking off). The diagnosis of hyperthyroidism is quite difficult because it simulates a lot of other conditions. A TSH test is can strengthen the diagnosis or make you look at some other thing. I think you should try to see an endocrinologist -preferably in a teaching hospital. Good luck. |

@lomaxx , hi! goodmorning... when I said my menses had become lighter and 'much'.. I meant- its become wattery and the flow is much.. used to be thick, but now thin..hence light.. btw, have never missed a period. thanks doc! hope hyperthyroidism isn't a big one?? I checked for the symptoms, I'm not fervent with about 60% of them aside the ones you listed tho.. I will be taking the doc's tests on Tuesday, will let you know how it goes. I was told I can only be referred to an endocrinologist..can't just go to him..so invariably, I still have to wait on my 'unresponsive' doc. |
| Re: What Could Be The Problem? by lomaxx: 8:06am On Feb 19, 2015 |
sacredheart:The symptoms you'd have will depend on the severity of the condition. Like I said, it's not a diagnosis one makes every other day. Difficult to clinch at the early stages. Worse of all, I could be wrong. But it's the closest possibility. Only the tests would confirm. You are entitled to a referral to a specialist from your GP. But then, he needs to make an initial assessment and see if the call is worth making. It's your doctors call. Hopefully it's not an emergency so just hang on. About the menses thing, clinical manifestations of a condition mostly occur in a spectrum - light flow to scanty flow to no flow - all depends on the severity. However, the slightest occurrence should quicken a high index of suspicion. |
