Indian police said they had arrested four men on Friday in connection with the alleged kidnap and gang rape of a Nigerian woman in a moving car in New Delhi.

The woman, police said, was kidnapped on Thursday evening from outside the same mall in south Delhi where, in late 2012, another woman had spent the evening before she was gang-raped on a moving bus in a case that horrified the world. She later died of her injuries from the attack.

Rajan Bhagat, a spokesman for Delhi police, said the Nigerian woman “was taken at 8 p.m. On Thursday in a car from Saket mall by a group of men.”

“We have already arrested four Indian men in the case,” he said.

The woman has not been named in accordance with Indian law that protects the identities of alleged victims of rape. The police spokesman declined to give further details about the alleged attack.

It was not immediately possible to reach the Nigerian embassy in New Delhi for comment.

The men, who are in custody and have not yet been charged with any offense, have all engaged lawyers, Mr. Bhagat said.

After the 2012 gang rape and murder of a female student in Delhi, India strengthened its laws to protect women from sexual violence and introduced harsher punishments for crimes such as rape.
