Franchise21:there is no much different, its just that the opthamologist can perform only DEEP surgical operation but optometrist can only perform lesser surgery. They do virtually the same thing here in nigeria. |

ixora3:Dentistry na hot course but optometry is more lucrative. During internship and nysc they pay them(medicine, optometry and dentistry) equally. But in professional field, optometry is far to be compare with dentistry if he create his own clinic. But if he decide to work in government hospital he must work under opthamologist. 6 Likes |

romzyxy: So what level are you now and which school? I'm sorry if you find this as i'm being too inquisitive. Like i said, i (others) want to learn from you. Things are changing in the world these days faster than one can ever imagine. The Poster "may" not be lucky tomorrow if he makes a mistake today. |

You don't sound like you want to learn, you sound like you already have a high opinion of your own and you want to shove it down our throats. Giving the op an answer free of bias is not too much of a thing to do. I tried not to quote you Champella, but I'm referring to you. To you op, I'll just take you back to what someone earlier had pointed out; you shouldn't study a course "just" because its lucrative. If you want money though, you should choose something else... Re: How Lucrative Is OPTOMETRY by Arosam(m): 8:27pm On Feb 23, 2015 |
Let be clear 1. OPTOMETRIST are not Med Doctors rather they are Oculus Doctor. 2. All professional courses are lucrative, limitations is from individuals' doing. 3. Don't compare Optometrist and Ophthalmologist, know what you want either first or later, each of them have their scope of practice. 4. There are others, Dispensing Opticians and Ophthalmic Nurses they all work together to ensure your healthy eyes. Oh to add to it I receive 150k as an Optometrist intern, Med Doc earn more than that but Am Ok with it 7 Likes |

favoured234: I did not mention Nigerian doctors working in the middle east. For a Nigerian medical doctor to be accepted as a consultant in the middle east, he/she must be a fellowship member in a recognized society in a western country e.g Royal College of Surgeons etc...otherwise he will be accepted as a GP after passing the appropriate board exam with a minimum starting salary of $5500 tax free (in the UAE for example). Consultants like Ophthalmologists, Cardiothracic surgeons Neurosurgeons earn anywhere between $19k to $47k monthly if employed in a govt entity e.g Dubai or Abu Dhabi, Qatar etc. Of the middle eastern contries, Saudi pays slightly less and has the worst and most notorious labor contracts imaginable. I hope this helps. Cheers 2 Likes 1 Share |

awolam: Majority of us on this forum are Nigerians living in Nigeria. So when posting some information you should put that into consideration because it could be misleading. @ the bolded I can agree with it but again have you heard of a Nigerian trained and practicing consultants in the Middle East? BTW I know a Nigerian Trained and practiced medical doctor cannot be a consultant in UAE even after registration with Fellowship of the west African College of Physicians or Surgeons .. The highest attainable title is a specialist again you can research and prove me wrong on this... I think a Specialist there in the UAE might have more exposure than a consultant in Nigeria all na name to me.. 3 Likes |

Ayosh: What you are saying is totally different from what he/she said and meant. What u said is correct, some northern state employ egyptians with cert in medical sciences that are not equivalent to medical Drs its very regreatable because they are puting innocent nigerians at grave risk. U said the user i quoted isn't far from the truth, I want the truth and not any thing close to the truth. Those north africans you refer to are not Nigerian optometrist. But I challenge u to mention one hospital or one optometrist you know practicing as a general practitioner in the north or nigeria as a whole. |

favoured234: Pls read carefully. Seems you didnt read my write up carefully. I never mentioned Nigerian doctors registered with west african college of surgeons. You MUST belong to a fellowship in a WESTERN country before you can work as a consultant here in the UAE irrespective of where you are from or where you did your first degree. Hope that clarifies the issue. Cheers. |
Re: How Lucrative Is OPTOMETRY by Nobody: 7:51am On Feb 26, 2015 |
awolam: No you are the one not reading my post carefully. I said before that we should stop bringing what is obtainable to the western countries to judge us living in Nigeria... Why do we have to know when its not readily obtainable by us.. Do you know what a Nigerian physician will go through to be a fellow in America, UK, Australia. Give us information we need not one to confuse our thinking.. We have enough to think about already |

I am an optometrist practicing in the UK. Optometry as a profession is very encouraging and financially rewarding esp in a developed country . the major problem limiting the health care sector in Nigeria is folks not knowing their boundaries. Optometrist want to do the job of an ophthalmologist. the ophthalmologist disrespect optometrist. this crates a messy environment . specialization in optometry includes Low Vision, Ocular Disease, Pediatrics/Binocular Vision, sport vision or Contact Lenses .To take responsibility for more pathological cases away from the ophthalmologist which is a positive thing which i encourage, then it is important for optometrist to under go further training in areas like glaucoma, macular degeneration, corneal abnormality ocular pharmacology etc . This is the right thing to do if patient care is to come 1st. 5 Likes |

Which universities in Nigeria take Optometry DIRECT ENTRY |
Re: How Lucrative Is OPTOMETRY by Samlo88(m): 10:48pm On Apr 13, 2015 |
Luchiana1:Hello! Most of the schools that offering the course do take candidates for direct entry but depends on their criteria & your qualification obtained to seek for direct entry admission. I'm an Optometry student of UNIBEN admitted through UTME last year despite having a diploma qualification but don't want to risk it because of what I saw on JAMB Bronchure which serves as a guide then been required a distinction level pass in diploma to be consider for direct entry admission. I dont know if the criteria is still actively enforce as at now., but if you are a BSC holder with good grade in a related biological science courses, you have a greater chance ahead of those with diploma holder for consider admission in uniben. You can check the latest JAMB Bronchure probably 2015 edition for proper guide. 2 Likes |
