About 65% of the population in Nigeria is dependent on agriculture for livelihood. It accounts for 22% of GDP , 38% of non-oil foreign exchange earnings. Poultry sector is 25% agriculture GDP.

In 2003, African countries agreed to invest 10% of their annual budget to Agriculture. As if 2014, only 1.47 was invested (Source: Poultry Association of Nigeria).
This is the time for Nigerians to wake up and go back to small, medium and large scale livestock production. There are many countries that do not have oil but has good economy. Livestock business generates income but not fast money that many youth want. It gives steady income and grows to a big enterprise. It is a business to start with small capital and savings. Let us maximize the opportunity we have, raw materials are available, cheap labours are available, much more the markets are available.
This is a forum where Livestock production, business proposal would be discussed in detail, proper information on purchasing, rearing, raising and diseases management and Veterinary Consultancy would also be available.
Feel free to ask question, contribute and make a request for consultancy.

whta aspect of the agricultural business are you into?
Re: Livestock Production: Fisheries, Poultry, Pig, Cattle, Sheep And Goats by seremy: 12:00pm On Feb 27, 2015
@Gabriel I am into fisheries and poultry production for now: Broilers, layers, cockerel, breeder flocks and turkey production.
I am a veterinarian, having worked in a farm that has cattle, sheep and goat, I am experienced in those areas
Re: Livestock Production: Fisheries, Poultry, Pig, Cattle, Sheep And Goats by seremy: 1:36pm On Feb 27, 2015
Today,
I want to talk over the nitty-gritty of broilers production business.
1) The open sided house is recommended, the pen may be constructed with plank and roof with iron sheets/Asbestos or look for an abandoned or rent-able poultry pen that you can rent. Thoroughly inspect the pen, it should be a floor pattern and properly cemented, check the roofing for any leakage, check the net and there must be a cross ventilation
2) Sales is the soul of any business, look for a processor that will buy your broilers@ 2 kg per bird in 6 -7 weeks
3) Broilers are raised on the floor called deep litter so you should consider renting a pen that has no cages.
4) Measurement of the Pen , 12-14 birds per meter square, I mean a pen of size 5 X 15 meter square can accommodate 1000 broilers properly or 5 X 60 or 10 X 30 meter square for 2000 broilers and 5 X 8 meter square for 500 broilers.
5) Feeding Utensil: 1 - 2 weeks circular chicks' feeders at 1 piece for 20 - 30 birds (check the pictures for identification)
3 - 7 weeks hang-able conical bucket feeder at 1 piece for 30 birds
6) Drinker 1 - 2 weeks chicks' drinkers with a base under lay at 1 piece for 30 birds
3 - 7 weeks bell drinkers at 1 piece per 40 birds
7) Litters/Shavings: you will spread dry wood shavings not saw dust on the dry floor of the house and it should reach at least 5 cm above the floor, the bags you need depends on the size of the pen
cool Charcoal pot: for 500 birds, 2 charcoal pot is enough depending on the size of your charcoal pots.
9) Charcoals
10) Source of water: which could be a good well or borehole (if you rent the pen, source of water would be available already
11) Feed ,each broiler will consume 4 kg of feed to give you 2 kg average weight. There is what is called FCR, feed conversion ratio, = feed consumed in kg / weight in kg, 4 kg of feed / 2 kg of weight = 2, if the value is lower than 2 it shows your bird converts the feed maximally
day 1 - 2 weeks give them Starter Mash
week 2 - 4 give them Grower Mash
Week 4 - 6/7 weeks give them finisher
if you buy 100 broilers i.e 100 X 4 kg = 400 kg of feed, a bag of feed is 25 kg , so 400 / 25 = 8 bags of feed will be enough to feed 100 broilers to 2 kg average weight
12) The broiler itself it is 120 naira per bird now, though it is seasonal.
Tomorrow:
we will discuss about the:
The cost of these materials
The House preparation
Disinfection
Chicks management

COST OF PRODUCING 500 BROILERS

1) Drinkers@ the rate of 200 per 1, 20 pieces = 4,000
2) Feeders@ the rate of 600 per 1, 20 pieces = 12,000
3) Broilers at the rate of 120 naira per 1, 500 pieces = 60,000
4) Rent of the Pen depending on the facility and location = 50,000
5) Wood Shavings = 2,000
6) Charcoal @ the rate of 1800 per bag, 2 pieces of bag = 3,600
7) Charcoal Pot = 1200
cool Feed: a broiler consume 4kg per bird and 500 broilers@ 5% mortality rate will remain 450 broilers, 450 broilers will consume 72 bags of feed at 25kg per bag while a bag cost 2500 naira , 72 bags = 180,000
9) Drug and Vaccine @ 32 naira per broiler, 16,000
10) Staff: 1 person is enough @ 15,000 naira per month = 15,000

TOTAL = 343,800

if you sell a broiler at 1,000 naira per live broiler (minimum amount) at 2kg per bird, 450 pieces = 450,000

profit based on your sales = 106,200

Remember your rent is a year, you can still raise bird for 10 months
the equipment to be bought will not be included in the next cycle.

HOUSE PREPARATION

The whole pen and the surrounding should be properly cleaned
The floor should be properly clean with formaldehyde (30% formalin, Diskol, Aquacline )
The pesticides and insecticides should be apply 4 days to arrival of birds
Spread the dried wood shavings
The drinkers and feeders should be properly washed, disinfect and spread on dry sun
and properly installed the next day.
Initiate heating of the pen with charcoal pot 24 hours prior to the arrival of the chickens
The final disinfection should be done using 30% heated formalin 24 hours before stocking

@ lonelyhouse wife;

Vaccination and Medication Schedule for broilers

Day 1: Place them on Vitamin and better still you supposed to a Veterinary laboratory test for the day old chicks which is called D.O.C screening,

from the test, the Veterinary doctors will collect blood sample from the birds' heart and use it for the test (ELISA TEST) to determine their

antibody titre against poultry diseases, from the test, you will be given the vaccination schedule and the antibiotics to be used for the birds. So it is a necessity to do the day old chicks screening from a reputable Veterinary laboratory.

Let me give you a vaccination and medication schedule for broilers without test (though it is not a standard way to raise birds)

Day 1- 5 : Multivitamin + Antibiotics (20% Enrofloxacin e.g. Conflox)

Day 5 : 1st Gumboro Vaccine

Day 7: : 1st Lasota Vaccine

Day 9 - 13: Anticoccidiosis drug e.g. Dicoxin plus

Day 15: 2nd Gumboro Vaccine

Day 17: 2nd Lasota Vaccine

Day 29 : 3rd Gumboro Vaccine

Day 31: 3rd Lasota vaccine

Like l said earlier broiler is reared between 6 - 7 weeks to achieve maximum weight of 2kg per bird

NOTE: when you want to do vaccination, you administer it with 1/4 of the total volume of drinking water of the birds per day.
for example, if the birds drink 40 liters per day, use 10 liters for vaccination

@EZEUDENE

If you read my earlier post, I have discussed the calculation

for the brooding stage (the first 21 days) of the life , you can use 1 drinker and 1 feeder per 30 birds

so for 2000 birds ,use 60 drinkers and feeders, the birds need to consume feed and drink very well in their early stage and they need to feed or drink from the nearby feeder or drinker so that is the reason you need enough

from the 4th week when you will start using bell drinker and bowl feeder, you can increase it to 1 drinker/feeder per 40 -50 birds

@ seremy thank you for your wonderful presententation, I am really concerned with the health of poultry especially,so I have. this question? what is the implication of

(1.) giving gumboro on the 10th day and lasota on the 21st day , which is different. from what u adviced

( 2') what is the ideal days gap to observe between. vaccination, administering of antibiotics and coccidiostat to prevent vaccine failure. thank you,

I am here to learn from you and
not to contradict ur inputs , I elder be very glad if u can enlighten me

I have given you vaccination schedule for broilers
the basis for initial 10 days interval between the 1st and 2nd vaccination is to allow antibody titre to have risen and come down before you introduce the second vaccination of the same type
